There is no required reading order for Marvel Comics. Start with a character, team, or kind of story you like, then pick a new series, a short arc, or a self-contained book. Marvel’s own guides offer several entry points rather than one universal chronology.
Choose your kind of starting point
The simplest way to choose is to decide how much continuity and reading you want to take on. Beginning a character’s run usually keeps the focus on that hero or team. A crossover event, by contrast, can draw on a wider cast and a broader stretch of Marvel continuity.

| Starting point | Best fit | Examples |
|---|---|---|
| A character or solo run | You want to follow one hero and begin at a series opening. | Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1; Hawkeye (2012) #1; Ms. Marvel (2014) #1; Thor: God of Thunder (2012) #1; Black Panther (2016) #1. |
| A team series | You want a group dynamic, shared adventures, or a particular team era. | Guardians of the Galaxy (2008) #1; Fantastic Four (2018) #1 or (2022) #1. |
| A bounded story | You want a defined story rather than an open-ended reading project. | Runaways (2003) #1; Doctor Strange & Doctor Doom: Triumph and Torment (1989); Planet Hulk, beginning in Hulk #92; Daredevil: Born Again, beginning in Daredevil #226. |
| A major event | You are interested in a large-scale Marvel conflict and are comfortable with a wider universe. | Civil War (2006) #1; Infinity Gauntlet (1991) #1; Secret Wars (1984) #1 or (2015) #1; Secret Invasion (2008) #1. |
These options come from Marvel’s beginner recommendations, Spider-Man guide, self-contained stories guide, events and modern classics guide, Fantastic Four guide, and Guardians of the Galaxy guide.
Where to start with specific characters and teams
Spider-Man
For a fresh retelling of Peter Parker’s beginnings, try Ultimate Spider-Man (2000) #1. If you want to start with the classic Peter Parker series, Marvel points to Amazing Spider-Man (1963) #1. You do not have to begin with either: the “If This Be My Destiny” story in Amazing Spider-Man #31–33 is a compact classic arc, while “The Night Gwen Stacy Died” in #121–122 and Kraven’s Last Hunt are landmark stories for readers ready to jump into a specific chapter of Spider-Man history. Marvel’s Spider-Man recommendations discuss these choices.

Should you start with a crossover?
You can, but it is a different experience from starting a solo run. Events such as Civil War, Infinity Gauntlet, Secret Wars, and Secret Invasion put a larger part of the Marvel universe in play. That broader scope can be appealing if you want a major conflict, but an event may connect to stories in other titles. Marvel’s events guide identifies these as options; it does not establish that a new reader must complete a particular prerequisite sequence before beginning them.
How to decide between the options
- Scope: Choose a solo series for one character, a team book for group dynamics, or an event for a wider cast.
- Continuity: A new series opening or self-contained story is a more direct entry than a crossover that draws from several titles.
- Commitment: A bounded arc or standalone book gives you a defined story; an ongoing series offers more to follow.
- Tone: Look for the kind of adventure you want, whether street-level heroics, cosmic science fiction, team drama, or coming-of-age.
- Format: You can read single issues, collect stories in print, or use a digital service. For a physical collection, check the specific edition’s contents so it includes the issues or story you intend to read.

Do you need to read Marvel Comics in order?
No. Marvel’s recommended starting points include new series openings, classic arcs, self-contained stories, and events. Pick one that suits your interests, and follow its story from there. If a book refers to something you have not read, you can decide whether to seek that context out or keep going; starting with the entire history of Marvel is not a requirement.
