Potentially, as a future shelter or base location—but no lunar cave has been shown to be safe or ready for people to live in. NASA has reported radar evidence of a cave extending from a pit on the Moon and relatively mild temperatures in the pit’s permanently shadowed reaches. Those findings make caves worth investigating; they do not establish a habitable site. Astronauts would still need a surveyed, stable route in and out, life support, power, communications, and protection from hazards the cave cannot eliminate.
What has actually been found on the Moon?
Radar evidence of a cave beneath a pit
In 2024, NASA reported that researchers reanalyzed 2010 data from the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter’s Mini-RF radar instrument and found evidence of a cave extending more than 200 feet (about 60 meters) from the base of a pit in Mare Tranquillitatis. NASA says the cave’s full extent is unknown and it could continue farther. This is evidence of a subsurface void, not a direct human survey or an assessment of whether the cave is habitable. A cave is not the same thing as a pit
A lunar pit is an opening or depression at the surface. It may be a skylight above a subsurface void, but its appearance alone does not establish how it formed or how far any underground passage extends. One proposed origin for lunar caves is a lava tube: a tunnel left when lava beneath a hardened crust drains away. A partial roof collapse could expose part of such a tube as a pit.

That was an estimate from the research reported at the time—not a current inventory, confirmation of every pit’s origin, or evidence that all such tubes can be entered. NASA’s 2022 summary

Why might a cave help astronauts?
More shelter from temperature extremes
The Moon’s exposed surface can experience severe temperature swings. NASA’s 2022 summary gives temperatures of about 260°F (127°C) during the day and −280°F (−173°C) at night for the cited locations; lunar day and night each last about 15 Earth days. Rock and shadow could reduce exposure to those extremes.
For the permanently shadowed reaches of the Mare Tranquillitatis pit, NASA reported temperatures around 63°F (17°C) with only slight fluctuation. That measurement is for the shadowed part of this particular pit. It may also describe a cave if one extends from the pit, but it is not a temperature reading for every lunar cave—or proof that a cave has the conditions needed for a habitat. Potential protection from impacts and radiation
Rock cover or an overhang could block some direct exposure to micrometeorites and radiation and offer shelter from surface conditions. In a 2014 NASA account, Arizona State University researcher Robert Wagner described pits as useful “in a support role for human activity on the lunar surface.” He discussed placing a habitat well back beneath an overhang as a way to reduce hazards. That was an assessment of the potential, not a guarantee that a particular cave blocks all radiation, impacts, or dust.

Scientific value beyond shelter
Pit walls can expose layers of lunar material, and exploring them could help scientists study how lunar maria formed and examine material less altered by long exposure at the surface. A site might therefore matter scientifically even if it proved unsuitable for a crewed base. NASA’s 2014 account of lunar pits
What would have to be established before people could live there?
The cave’s shape, stability, and safe access
A candidate site would need detailed mapping of its opening, passage, floor, and any route back to the surface. Investigators would have to assess loose rubble, boulders, steep walls, rock stability, and whether the passage continues beyond mapped areas. A visible opening or radar evidence of a void cannot answer those questions by itself.

NASA’s cave-exploration report describes planetary voids as daunting environments and says astronauts should not be sent to explore them without prior robotic reconnaissance and modeling. Its Spelunker concept is a research and mission concept, not an operational lunar system. NASA-hosted report: Technologies Enabling Exploration of Skylights, Lava Tubes and Caves
Robotic reconnaissance before crew exploration
Robots could help inspect a pit and map underground terrain before astronauts approach it. The NASA report discusses possible approaches such as rappelling, hopping, or driving into a cave, then navigating in darkness with limited communications. These are engineering challenges and concepts described in the report, not capabilities demonstrated on a lunar cave mission.

NASA’s 2025 report on seismic methods describes experiments in Earth analog locations. It says adapting the method for planetary use would require further development, so it does not establish that seismic surveying has already mapped a lunar cave. NASA Science, September 26, 2025
Life support and infrastructure
A cave does not provide breathable air, water, food, electricity, sanitation, thermal control, or communications. A crew would need a habitat and systems to supply those essentials, along with a reliable way to move equipment and people in and out. The cave findings cited here do not establish a complete habitat design or certify any site for occupancy.

A useful assessment would combine several kinds of evidence rather than treating a favorable temperature or a promising radar signal as decisive:

So, could astronauts live in a Moon cave?
Possibly in the future, if robotic surveys identify a suitable cave and engineers can install the systems needed for a safe, sustained human presence. Current findings support the idea of a cave as a potential shelter—not the claim that astronauts can safely live in one now.
