If you already have an audience, a direct storefront may fit; if you need marketplace discovery, Etsy or Gumroad Discover may be worth considering, though neither guarantees sales. The available fee comparison covers 10 platforms, not 15, and its figures are a dated snapshot rather than a like-for-like audit.
How to choose where to sell digital products
Start with four questions before comparing prices:
- Where will buyers come from? If you bring customers through your own audience, compare direct-selling tools. If you want marketplace search or discovery, consider Etsy or Gumroad Discover, while treating discovery as a possible channel rather than a promise of traffic.
- What are you selling? A downloadable file, a structured course, and a recurring membership require different delivery and customer-management features.
- What is the total cost at your likely sales volume? Add the monthly subscription, platform percentage, fixed transaction charge, payment processing, listing fees, and any paid discovery or advertising charge.
- How do payments and taxes work where you live? Check merchant-of-record scope, payout methods, payment-provider requirements, and seller reporting obligations for your country.
Also verify storefront branding, customer-data access, and export options directly with the provider before committing. The comparison below draws its figures from AOVANCY’s vendor-authored comparison, which says it checked fees on 29 September 2026 and displays monthly prices as shown to an EU visitor. It is not an independent audit; prices and terms may differ by market or change.

Digital product platforms compared
These are the 10 platforms covered by the dated comparison. Listed fees are not necessarily the full cost: processing charges, geography, payment method, plan conditions, and acquisition channel can change what a seller pays.
| Platform | Reported pricing model | Best-fit distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Gumroad | $0/month; 10% + $0.50 for direct/profile sales; 30% through Discover; card processing is additional. | Direct links and a possible discovery channel. Gumroad says it supports downloads, ebooks, courses, tutorials, and memberships. |
| Payhip | $0, $29, or $99/month; reported platform share of 5%, 2%, or 0% by plan; processor charges are additional. | Compare the higher monthly plan cost with the platform share saved at your expected sales volume. |
| Lemon Squeezy | $0/month; 5% + $0.50; the comparison reports additional conditions for non-US buyers and PayPal. Processing is included in the reported model. | Confirm the applicable fee for buyer geography and payment method. |
| Etsy | $0 monthly, with a possible one-time setup charge; 6.5% transaction fee plus $0.20 listing fee. US processing is reported as 3% + $0.25; Offsite Ads can add a charge. | Marketplace search may aid discovery. Fees vary with geography and ad attribution. |
| Sellfy | $29, $79, or $159/month; no platform share in the listed plans; processing is additional. The comparison reports annual sales caps. | Flat monthly pricing may suit steady sales, subject to plan caps. |
| Podia | $42, $84, or $150/month; 5% on Mover and none on higher plans; processing is additional. | Positioned in the comparison for courses and downloads. |
| Teachable | $39, $89, or $189/month; 7.5% on Starter and none on higher plans. Processing differs for US and other cards. | Course-first platform; compare plan charges and processing together. |
| Kajabi | $179, $249, or $499/month; no platform share reported; processing applies. | Positioned for established course businesses seeking more functions in one subscription. |
| Thinkific | €53, €107, or €213/month, as displayed to the comparison’s EU visitor; no platform share with Thinkific Payments; processing applies. | Course-first option; the no-platform-share condition is tied to Thinkific Payments. |
| AOVANCY | €0 Free plan; 7.5% after card processing, according to the company’s own comparison. | The publisher is a participant in the comparison, so treat its pricing description as vendor-authored. |
These figures are a snapshot from AOVANCY’s comparison dated 29 September 2026, not guaranteed current prices. Check the provider’s official pricing and fees pages for your country before choosing. For example, Payhip’s official pricing page is at payhip.com/pricing, and Etsy’s policy is at etsy.com/legal/fees/.

Which platforms fit common product types?
Downloads and mixed digital products
Gumroad’s official pricing page lists downloads, ebooks, courses, tutorials, and memberships. Its direct-sale and Discover rates differ, so the route by which a buyer arrives matters to the transaction cost. See Gumroad’s pricing page for its current terms.
Payhip is another option to assess for direct sales: its reported platform share falls from 5% to 2% to 0% across the comparison’s plans, while monthly charges rise. That trade-off only makes sense when you estimate sales volume and include payment processing.
Courses
The comparison positions Podia, Teachable, Thinkific, and Kajabi as course-oriented. Their plan structures differ substantially, so compare the subscription and any platform percentage against the features and sales volume you actually need. Gumroad also lists courses among supported formats, but that does not make its course delivery equivalent to a course-first service.
Memberships and creator communities
Patreon is a membership-oriented adjacent option rather than one of the 10 platforms in the fee table. Its official pricing page lists a 10% charge on creator income, with payment processing, currency conversion, payout fees, and applicable taxes additional. It supports subscriptions, tiers, and one-time payments. See Patreon’s pricing page.

A branded online store
Shopify is an online-store option for sellers who want a branded shop. Its charges depend on plan and payment setup, so it cannot be compared with a single platform percentage in isolation. Check Shopify’s plan comparison.

Where can you sell digital products for free?
“Free” can mean no monthly subscription, not zero cost per sale. In the dated comparison, Gumroad and Lemon Squeezy have $0/month models with transaction charges; Payhip has a $0 plan with a reported 5% platform share; and AOVANCY reports a €0 Free plan with 7.5% after card processing. Etsy has no monthly charge in the comparison, but it reports a listing fee, transaction fee, possible setup charge, and potentially other charges. A no-monthly-fee option can therefore cost more as sales rise.
Patreon says on its official pricing page, “Patreon is free to start. You only pay when you start earning.” That statement refers to Patreon’s pricing model; its listed 10% charge and other costs still apply when income is earned.

Which platform takes the least from each sale?
There is no reliable single winner across these services because the fee models include different combinations of subscription charges, percentages, fixed fees, processing, listings, and discovery costs. Among the reported terms, Payhip’s higher plans have a 0% platform share but carry monthly fees and processor charges. Gumroad’s direct/profile rate is 10% + $0.50 before card processing, while its Discover rate is 30%. Etsy’s reported US processing rate is separate from its transaction and listing fees. Calculate the effective cost using your own expected order value, sales count, buyer locations, and acquisition route.
Can you sell digital products without a website?
Yes. A marketplace or hosted storefront can provide a place to list products and take orders without you building a standalone site first. Etsy is a marketplace option; Gumroad supports direct product links and a Discover channel. A hosted creator or course platform may also provide a storefront, while Shopify is oriented toward an online store. “No website” does not remove the need to check platform fees, payment availability, customer-data access, and the rules for reaching buyers.
Check payment and tax responsibilities before launch
Platforms’ tax handling is not interchangeable, and a company’s description does not establish what every seller owes in every jurisdiction. Gumroad says it has acted as merchant of record since 1 January 2025 and handles sales-tax collection and remittance; its FAQ also says obligations vary by location. Patreon says it handles most applicable tax collection and remittance, while separately identifying processing, currency conversion, and payout costs. Confirm the provider’s current terms for your location and seek qualified tax advice for your own circumstances.

- Match the format: shortlist services that deliver your specific download, course, or membership format.
- Estimate your costs: use expected monthly orders and average order value to add subscription fees, platform percentages, fixed charges, processing, listing costs, and any ad or discovery charges.
- Check market-specific details: verify current fees, supported countries, payout options, and tax language on the provider’s own pages.
- Check portability and control: confirm whether you can export customer and product data and how the service lets you communicate with buyers.
