You can use an AI coding agent’s existing logs as the foundation for a combined time-and-cost tracker—but the logs measure agent activity, not necessarily the hours you personally worked. The reliable approach is to preserve that distinction, identify what your agent records, and label any calculated cost according to how your account is billed.
What an agent log can—and cannot—tell you
A coding agent’s event or session history can show when activity happened and, depending on the product, details such as requests or token usage. That gives you useful raw material for a tracker. It does not, by itself, establish that you were working continuously for the entire span between the first and last event.

To report time, choose and document a rule that fits your purpose. For example, you might count active sessions or group events into work intervals, but the result is only as meaningful as the rule and the underlying log. A time total derived from activity records should be described as tracked or estimated time—not automatically as verified labor time.

OpenAI also documents session event streams and ways to inspect agent session history in its observability and usage guidance. Those are different levels of detail: session events help describe activity, while per-request usage can provide a basis for more granular accounting when the implementation exposes it.

Separate activity, time, usage and cost
A useful tracker should keep the underlying measures distinct rather than collapsing them into one number. Depending on what your agent exposes, its records may support some or all of these fields:
- Activity: session or event timestamps that show when the agent ran.
- Time: a total derived using an explicit interval or session rule; it is not proof of uninterrupted human work.
- Usage: tokens or requests, when the product or API provides them.
- Cost: a calculated estimate or a figure reconciled against authoritative billing records, depending on the account and data source.
Keep the source and billing mode with each cost figure. A number computed from token usage is not necessarily the amount charged: some accounts use plan allowances, while others incur API charges. If you cannot reconcile the calculation with billing records, call it an estimate.

Choose the reporting source that matches your account
Built-in product views, API usage data and a local tracker answer different questions. Their availability and scope depend on the product, account, billing mode and, in some cases, workspace eligibility.
| Source | What it can show | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT/Codex plan and usage information | OpenAI documents Codex limits and usage windows for ChatGPT plans. | Limits and windows depend on the account and plan; they are not necessarily a detailed personal time ledger. See OpenAI’s Codex plan guidance. |
| ChatGPT Desktop Work and Codex usage history | Eligible Enterprise and Edu workspaces can review Work and Codex usage history, with some per-chat detail. | Do not assume this reporting is available to every ChatGPT or Codex account. Records can be delayed or unavailable, some activity may not be included, and credit displays are not invoices. See OpenAI’s usage-history guidance for scope and billing details. |
| OpenAI Agents SDK request usage | Request-level entries include token counts and can support detailed cost calculation and context monitoring. | This applies when an implementation uses the SDK and exposes the relevant usage records; it does not make every agent’s logs equivalent to an invoice. See the Agents SDK usage documentation. |
| Claude Code session cost | With an API key, Claude Code’s /cost command shows running spend for the current session. |
Claude Code distinguishes API-key billing from usage included with an Enterprise seat. Check Anthropic’s models, usage and limits guidance for the applicable mode. |
| Claude Console usage and cost reports | Eligible roles can view API usage by model, date/time and API key, inspect cost by model and month, and export CSV. | Anthropic’s reporting guidance, dated March 16, 2026, says costs cannot currently be broken down by individual users. See the Claude Console reporting guide. |
Build a tracker from the records you actually have
The title describes a practical idea—reusing agent activity instead of starting with a separate timer—but no particular agent, log format, calculation rule or implementation is established here. Those details vary, so do not assume that one product’s commands or fields apply to another.

- QUALITY – Durable hard cover with vegan leather finish, 100 GSM high-quality paper, elastic closure, and 2 bookmarks. Portable A5 size is perfect for your desk, backpack, work bag, or school bag.
- Identify the source. Check the agent’s official usage, session-history or API documentation. Note whether your records are event-level, session-level or request-level, and whether they include tokens, model information or timestamps.
- Define the time rule. Decide what qualifies as a session or interval and how gaps are handled. Record that definition alongside totals so a reader can understand what “hours” means.
- Keep usage values tied to their scope. Preserve model, date and request/session context where available. Do not infer token totals if the records do not provide them.
- Determine the billing mode. Establish whether usage is included in a plan or billed through an API key. The same usage number may not translate into an out-of-pocket charge across those arrangements.
- Label calculated costs accurately. Treat a local calculation as an estimate unless you have reconciled it with the relevant billing records. Keep source values and calculation assumptions available for checking.
- Check for gaps and delays. Product reporting can be delayed, incomplete or limited to particular accounts. Note the reporting period and avoid presenting a partial view as a complete account ledger.
When a local tracker adds value
A local view is most useful when the question is broader than “what did this product’s usage page show?” For example, it can bring activity and time estimates together, or make a consistent report from the specific records available to you. Its value depends on the data: if the agent exposes only session events, the tracker cannot manufacture request-level token counts or invoice-grade costs.
Use the official product or billing view for the information it is designed to report, and use a derived tracker for the additional perspective you define. For OpenAI Desktop usage, that means respecting workspace eligibility and the documented distinction between usage displays and billing records. For Claude, distinguish the current-session API-key figure from included Enterprise-seat usage, and note that Console cost reports do not currently provide individual-user breakdowns.
