If you want to see Barbara Hepworth sculptures in Cornwall, start at the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden at Trewyn Studio, Barnoon Hill, St Ives, TR26 1AD. It was Hepworth’s home and workplace from 1949 until her death in 1975, and it presents the largest group of her work permanently on display in the original studio, garden and working spaces she arranged.
Add Tate St Ives at Porthmeor Beach if you want a broader view of the St Ives art scene. A third Cornwall lead is Rock Form (Porthcurno), a 1964 bronze listed at Cornwall County Hall in Truro, but its public display is not guaranteed and must be checked before you travel.

The three Cornwall options at a glance
| Place | What you can reasonably expect | Important planning note |
|---|---|---|
| Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden Barnoon Hill, St Ives, TR26 1AD |
Hepworth’s former home and workplace, with more than 30 works in wood, stone, plaster and bronze described by Visit Cornwall. The display includes the studio and garden. | The dedicated Hepworth destination. Confirm current opening, ticket and access information with Tate. |
| Tate St Ives Porthmeor Beach, St Ives, TR26 1TG |
A separate gallery devoted to modern and contemporary art, with artists associated with St Ives, including Hepworth in some displays. | Displays and exhibitions change, so a particular sculpture cannot be assumed to be on view. Visit St Ives says it requires a separate ticket from the museum. |
| Cornwall County Hall Truro |
The official Hepworth public-collections listing names Rock Form (Porthcurno), bronze, 1964. | The listing warns that works may not be on display. Contact the institution before making a special journey. |
For most visitors, the practical answer is simple: make St Ives your base, visit the museum first, and treat Tate St Ives as an optional second stop. Truro is a verification-dependent lead rather than a guaranteed gallery visit.

It is Hepworth’s own working environment
The museum occupies Trewyn Studio, where Hepworth lived and worked from 1949 to 1975. This is not a reconstructed gallery designed after the fact: the studio, yard and garden are the places in which she made and lived with the work. Hepworth described the attraction of the site in her own words: “Here was a studio, a yard and garden where I could work in open air and space.”

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That setting changes how the sculptures read. You see works against walls, planting, paths and natural light rather than in a neutral white room. The relationship between solid forms, cut openings, shadows and surrounding space becomes part of the visit. Because the museum preserves the setting Hepworth arranged, it is especially valuable if you want to understand her practice rather than simply tick off individual titles.
A substantial permanent group
Visit Cornwall describes more than 30 works at the museum and garden. The listing identifies pieces in wood, stone, plaster and bronze, giving visitors a cross-section of the materials Hepworth used. The permanent presentation is the strongest reason to choose this site when a visit is centred specifically on Hepworth.
“Permanent” does not mean that every object is guaranteed to be visible every day. Conservation, loans, safety work or changes to the visitor route can affect what is accessible. If one particular sculpture matters to your trip, ask Tate for the current work-level display information rather than relying only on the general description.

How the museum came to be
Hepworth’s family opened the museum in 1976, the year after her death. Tate began owning and running it in 1980. Those dates explain why the site combines an intimate artist’s-house atmosphere with the standards and visitor systems of a national gallery. The result is both a historic studio visit and a curated collection.

Is the Barbara Hepworth Museum worth visiting?
Yes, particularly if you value place as much as objects. The museum is the only Cornwall destination in this list specifically organised around Hepworth’s home, studio and garden, and it is the location described as holding the largest group of her work permanently on display. It also makes sense for visitors who have limited time: the visit gives you Hepworth’s biography, materials and spatial ideas in one setting rather than requiring you to chase changing exhibitions.
The museum may be less suitable if your sole aim is to see one named work whose location is not confirmed. In that case, contact Tate before booking travel. A historic house-and-garden presentation also differs from a conventional gallery: paths, outdoor areas and studio spaces may have different surfaces or access conditions, and the available information here does not establish current accessibility arrangements.
What Tate St Ives adds
A broader St Ives context
Tate St Ives stands at Porthmeor Beach, St Ives, at TR26 1TG. It is a separate gallery rather than an extension of the museum. Its programme places Hepworth alongside artists associated with St Ives and with wider modern and contemporary art. That context can help you compare Hepworth’s approach to abstraction, landscape and materials with the work of her peers.
Why you must check the current display
Tate St Ives exhibitions and collection displays change. A gallery can own or present work by Hepworth without showing the same sculpture throughout the year. If you are travelling for a specific title, ask Tate what is currently installed and whether the work will remain on view on your intended date.

Visit St Ives notes that the museum requires a separate ticket from Tate St Ives. Do not assume that admission to one site covers the other; confirm the current ticket terms directly with Tate because prices and policies can change.
How to combine the two St Ives visits
A sensible plan is to schedule the museum as the fixed Hepworth appointment and use Tate St Ives as the flexible addition. This protects the main purpose of your day if Tate’s display changes. Both sites are in St Ives, but they are separate venues with separate visitor information, so check opening days, entry arrangements and any timed-admission requirements for each one.
The Truro lead: Rock Form (Porthcurno)
What is listed
Barbara Hepworth’s official public-collections listing names Rock Form (Porthcurno), a bronze dated 1964, at Cornwall County Hall in Truro. This is a useful lead for anyone interested in seeing a Hepworth work outside St Ives and for visitors already planning time in Truro.
Why it is not a guaranteed sightseeing stop
The same official listing warns that works may not be on display and recommends checking with the institution before travelling. A collection record is not proof that the sculpture is currently accessible to the public, that it is in the building named, or that visitors can walk in without an appointment.

- Contact Cornwall County Hall before your trip.
- Ask whether Rock Form (Porthcurno) is currently on display and where visitors should go.
- Confirm opening arrangements, identification requirements, photography rules and any appointment process.
- Only add Truro to a Hepworth-focused itinerary after receiving a current confirmation.
If the institution cannot confirm access, regard the listing as collection information rather than a promised viewing opportunity. Do not substitute another sculpture or claim that the work is publicly visible at all times.
Choosing the right destination for your goal
| Your priority | Best-supported choice | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| See the largest permanently presented group in an authentic setting | Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden | It is Hepworth’s former home and workplace and combines the original studio, garden and a substantial group of works. |
| Understand Hepworth within the St Ives art movement | Museum plus Tate St Ives | The museum supplies the personal and working context; Tate provides a broader, changing gallery context. |
| Find a specific work outside St Ives | Cornwall County Hall, Truro, only after confirmation | Rock Form (Porthcurno) is listed there, but display is not guaranteed. |
| Make an unplanned gallery visit without checking a particular title | Start with the museum; consider Tate if its current programme suits you | The museum is the stable Hepworth anchor, while Tate’s contents change. |
Planning your visit
Verify volatile details directly
Current prices, opening hours and access arrangements are not established reliably enough here to publish as fixed facts. Before departure, use Tate’s current visitor information for the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden and for Tate St Ives. Confirm the date-specific admission system, closures, accessibility provisions and any restrictions affecting the garden or studio.
Allow for separate admission
Plan the museum and Tate St Ives as two separate visits, with separate tickets unless Tate’s current terms explicitly say otherwise. If you are visiting on a tight schedule, check both venues’ opening hours first; a later start or early closure at one site can change the order that works best.
Ask about the work you care about
Send Tate the exact title, if known, rather than asking generally whether “some Hepworths” are displayed. For Tate St Ives, request confirmation for the intended date because displays change. For the museum, ask whether the named work is accessible and whether any conservation or route changes affect it. For Truro, ask Cornwall County Hall specifically about Rock Form (Porthcurno) and public access.

Plan for a historic site, not only a gallery
The museum includes a former home, studio, yard and garden. Wear footwear suitable for an outdoor, working-site environment and allow time to look at how sculptures interact with walls, planting and daylight. The available information does not establish detailed access conditions, so visitors who need step-free routes, seating, assistance or other accommodations should request current guidance before booking.
A practical St Ives itinerary
- Begin at Trewyn Studio. Make the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden the non-negotiable part of the day.
- Read the setting as part of the collection. Move between studio, yard and garden rather than treating each sculpture as an isolated object.
- Record questions, not only photographs. Note differences among wood, stone, plaster and bronze, and how openings and surfaces respond to daylight.
- Check Tate St Ives on the day. If the current programme includes Hepworth or relevant St Ives artists, add the separate gallery visit.
- Keep Truro conditional. Travel there for the Hepworth listing only if Cornwall County Hall has confirmed that the sculpture can be viewed.
What to look for in Hepworth’s Cornwall works
The Cornwall sites let you study several kinds of evidence at once. At Trewyn, the arrangement of sculpture in open air shows how Hepworth used space, shadow and distance as active parts of a work. The variety of materials noted by Visit Cornwall lets you compare the visual and tactile consequences of wood, stone, plaster and bronze. At Tate St Ives, a changing display may shift the emphasis toward artistic relationships and historical context. At Truro, the listed bronze provides a single-work encounter if access is confirmed.
Do not judge the museum only by the number of objects. Its importance lies in the combination of works and working environment: the place where Hepworth lived, made sculpture and decided how pieces should sit in relation to one another. That combination is not reproduced by a sculpture shown alone in an administrative building or by a temporary gallery display.
Bottom line for a Cornwall trip
Book your plans around the Barbara Hepworth Museum and Sculpture Garden in St Ives. It is the most dependable and complete Cornwall answer to “Where can I see Barbara Hepworth sculptures in Cornwall?” Add Tate St Ives for changing exhibitions and a wider St Ives perspective, but verify its current displays and separate ticketing. Treat Cornwall County Hall’s listing for Rock Form (Porthcurno) as an invitation to check, not as a guaranteed public viewing.
