Archaeologists recovered 48 prehistoric arrows during the 2026 field season in Norway’s Jotunheimen mountains. The newest headline find—a slate arrowhead with sections of wooden shaft—may be approximately 5,000 to 6,000 years old, according to the Secrets of the Ice and Glacial Archaeology Programme. That is a comparative estimate, not a newly published radiocarbon date.
Where the arrows were found
The work took place in Innlandet, in eastern Norway’s high mountains. The official Museum of Cultural History report names three ice-patch areas investigated in Jotunheimen: Langfonne, Storefonne and Hanklefonne. The arrows were recovered as melting ice exposed material that had been sealed in snow and ice for centuries or millennia.

Science Norway quoted programme leader Espen Finstad saying, “This year, we found 48 prehistoric arrows. That’s a lot.” Over several seasons, more than 100 arrowheads and shafts have been recovered from a single ice patch, showing that the 2026 total is part of a much larger archaeological record rather than an isolated discovery.

The 2026 slate arrow
The arrow highlighted in the 2026 reports has a slate arrowhead and surviving sections of its wooden shaft. Archaeologists estimate it at approximately 5,000–6,000 years old by comparing it with previously discovered arrows. The field reports do not present that range as a new, single radiocarbon measurement.

What the Langfonne dates show
A peer-reviewed study of Langfonne provides the site’s radiocarbon framework. It dated 68 arrows and five isolated arrowheads to a range of 6,180–680 calibrated years BP. The earliest activity at the site falls around 6,200–5,700 calibrated years BP. “Calibrated years BP” is the study’s technical dating system; it should not be treated as interchangeable with the rounded “5,000–6,000 years old” wording used for the newly highlighted arrow.
Langfonne is described as the most arrow-rich known ice-patch site in the world. The current-season estimate and the Langfonne study therefore answer related but different questions: one identifies the likely age of a newly recovered object by comparison, while the other reports a dated sequence of earlier finds.

| Arrow or arrowhead material | Approximate age reported | What it shows |
|---|---|---|
| Slate | Approximately 5,000–6,000 years for the newly highlighted arrow, estimated by comparison | A stone hunting technology with surviving wooden-shaft sections |
| Bone | Approximately 5,000 years | An organic arrowhead preserved in the ice |
| Freshwater mussel shell | Approximately 3,600 years | Use of locally available shell material for an arrowhead |
| Iron | Approximately 1,000–1,500 years | Later hunting technology in the same broad ice-patch record |
These ages come from the Museum of Cultural History and programme captions for the finds. They are not a claim that every arrow recovered in 2026 has been individually dated.

Why ice preserves arrows—and why melting can destroy them
What remains sealed in ice
Permanent or long-lasting ice can preserve materials that normally disappear quickly. Wooden shafts, hide, sinew and textiles may survive alongside stone, shell, bone and metal. That makes an ice patch an unusually detailed record of hunting equipment and movement through the mountains.
What happens after exposure
Once an object emerges, the conditions that protected it become a threat. The Langfonne study describes fragmentation and loss from ice deformation, transport by meltwater, abrasive sediment, repeated freeze-thaw cycles, moisture, trampling and temperature changes. Some very early shafts survived only as short fragments. In several cases, no tar, sinew or fletching remained, so the original arrows cannot be reconstructed in full.

Recovery is therefore time-sensitive: melting can reveal an artefact and begin damaging it almost immediately. Archaeologists must locate exposed material, document its position and stabilize it before water, weather or foot traffic causes further loss.

The arrows fit a much broader hunting landscape. The programme reports extensive evidence of reindeer and reindeer hunting around the ice patches, together with clothing, shoes, packhorse remains and skis. The Langfonne study recorded 290 animal remains; 97 percent were reindeer.

Because the dated arrows span thousands of years, the site records repeated human activity rather than one short-lived expedition. Hunters appear to have returned to predictable high-mountain locations where reindeer could be intercepted near ice. The sequence of materials—from slate, bone and shell to iron—also shows that the hunting tradition persisted while equipment changed.
How the 2026 discoveries compare with earlier Langfonne material
| Comparison point | 2026 field discoveries | Earlier Langfonne study |
|---|---|---|
| Chronology | 48 arrows recovered; one slate-arrow find estimated at approximately 5,000–6,000 years by comparison | 68 arrows and five isolated arrowheads dated to 6,180–680 calibrated years BP |
| Preservation | At least one find retains arrowhead and wooden-shaft sections | Some early shafts survive only as short fragments, without tar, sinew or fletching |
| Materials | Slate is highlighted in the newly reported arrow | Older examples include slate, bone and freshwater mussel shell; later examples include iron |
| Context | Work covered Langfonne, Storefonne and Hanklefonne in Jotunheimen | Langfonne provides a long, dated record of reindeer hunting and travel |
| Climate risk | Melting enabled recovery while exposing objects to damage | Long-term ice loss threatens the archaeological sequence itself |
Why climate change makes this an emergency
The programme says the ice is disappearing faster than expected and warns that many monitored archaeological ice-patch sites may be completely gone within 20 years. That is a statement about the programme’s monitored sites, not a universal forecast for every glacier or ice field.
Finstad told Science Norway, “This year, there was a much deeper sense of seriousness and sadness. Only patches of ice remain where we once had large ice patches. It’s brutal. And this year, that reality struck us more forcefully than ever before.” The programme summarizes the stakes this way: “We have been at the edge of the ice. We have seen it happening. And we are witnesses to a rapidly changing archaeological landscape.”

The paradox is that melting creates a brief opportunity to find objects while removing the environment that preserved them. Every season can add evidence—and also erase evidence that has not yet been recovered.
Can visitors see the arrows in a museum?
Selected finds are displayed in a refrigerated case at the Norwegian Mountain Centre in Lom, in the Frozen in Time exhibition. Recovered objects become part of the Museum of Cultural History collections. Display arrangements, opening hours and ticket or partner arrangements can change, so check the Norwegian Mountain Centre before planning a visit.
