Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minutePut the BIOS in the directory shown in RetroArch under Settings → Directory → System/BIOS. That configured path—not a tutorial’s hard-coded Android folder—is authoritative for your installation. Then follow the selected core’s documentation for the exact filename, extension, MD5 hash and any required subfolder.
Find RetroArch’s actual BIOS folder
- Open RetroArch.
- Go to Settings.
- Open Directory.
- Select System/BIOS.
- Record the complete path displayed by RetroArch.
RetroArch commonly uses a filesystem folder named system, but the folder can be elsewhere depending on the Android build, installation source, device and any directory changes you made. Check the configured path in the Libretro BIOS documentation rather than assuming it is /storage/emulated/0/RetroArch/system. The usual /storage/emulated/0 location is the user-facing internal-storage root, not a guaranteed BIOS destination (Android file-browser guide).

Copy the BIOS on Android
- Use an Android file manager to locate the BIOS in Downloads, cloud storage, USB storage or another source.
- Extract the archive when the core requires an individual file. Do not leave a ZIP in place unless that core’s documentation explicitly supports compressed BIOS files.
- Open the exact directory shown by System/BIOS.
- Copy the file there without changing its name or extension.
- Restart the core, or close and reload the game.
Do not confuse the BIOS directory with the ROM/content directory, file-browser starting location, cores, saves or save-state folders. BIOS files are firmware or system software from the original hardware; they are not emulator cores, games or save files. Some cores require firmware, some support it optionally and others do not use it. For example, Beetle PSX HW and SwanStation require a BIOS, while PCSX-ReARMed and mGBA list BIOS support as optional (Libretro BIOS guide).
Check the core’s exact requirements
The generic system directory is only the starting point. Open the documentation page for the core you are actually using and verify all four items:

- Location: the configured system directory or a documented subfolder.
- Filename and extension: spelling, punctuation and capitalization can matter.
- Hash: the documented MD5 must match the file.
- Core settings: an optional BIOS may need to be enabled in the core options.
Renaming an unrelated file to bios.bin does not make it valid. A matching name can still be the wrong region, revision or a corrupted dump. The BIOS information hub explains the location, filename and MD5 checks (BIOS information hub).
When a subfolder is required
Most BIOS files are placed directly in the configured system directory, conceptually:

Some cores require a specific hierarchy instead. Examples documented by Libretro include:

Examples of filename and option checks
The Atari800 documentation lists required names such as 5200.rom and ATARIXL.ROM, together with their MD5 values (Atari800 documentation). Gearsystem lists optional bios.sms and bios.gg files and requires the corresponding Master System or Game Gear BIOS option to be enabled (Gearsystem documentation).
Fix “BIOS not found” errors
- Compare the file’s location with the path currently shown at Settings → Directory → System/BIOS.
- Make sure the archive is extracted when required.
- Check for extra suffixes such as
(USA), a doubled extension such as.bin.bin, or incorrect capitalization. - Verify the extension and MD5 hash against the selected core’s documentation.
- Check whether the core expects a subfolder such as
dolphin-emu/Sysorfbneo. - Confirm that the BIOS is actually required, rather than optional.
- Enable any core option that activates optional BIOS support.
- Ensure you launched the intended core and that its game and BIOS revisions are compatible.
- Restart RetroArch or reload the content after correcting the file.
If the file appears correct but the game still fails, the problem may be a missing additional firmware file, an incompatible or damaged ROM, an incorrect core setting or a different configuration file being used.

When Android will not let you open the folder
RetroArch may be configured to an app-private directory that RetroArch can read but a normal file manager cannot. Android restricts access to some locations under application data, including paths similar to /data/user/0/com.retroarch/ (Libretro’s Android access notes).
The practical fix is to move the system directory to user-accessible shared storage:

- 🎮 Magnetic Detachable Faceplates: Elevate your G8 Galileo to match your unique style with magnetic detachable faceplates. Effortlessly switch them out to keep your gaming setup fresh and exhilarating, much like you'd personalize your in-game character.
- Open Settings → Directory → System/BIOS.
- Choose or create a stable shared-storage folder, such as a
RetroArch/systemdirectory. - Select that folder through RetroArch’s own file browser.
- Save the current configuration.
- Copy the BIOS into the newly selected folder and restart RetroArch.
This distinguishes an inaccessible path from a wrong path: RetroArch may be able to read a private location even when your file manager cannot, while a permission-denied location must be changed to one the app can access. Root access is not the normal solution.
Configuration-file fallback
If the directory selector is unclear, the setting is stored as system_directory in retroarch.cfg:
- In RetroArch, select Main Menu → Configuration File → Save Current Configuration.
- Locate the resulting
retroarch.cfgand open it with a text editor. - Find a line like
system_directory = "..."and confirm the path. - Close RetroArch before editing so it cannot overwrite your change on exit.
- Save the file, reopen RetroArch and verify the path under Settings → Directory → System/BIOS.
The directory guide documents both system_directory and the save-configuration workflow (Changing RetroArch directories).

Can RetroArch download the BIOS?
Some cores expose Main Menu → Online Updater → Core System Files Downloader. Dolphin documents this as an easy way to install its system files when the menu is available (Dolphin documentation). It is not a universal BIOS installer and should not be treated as a source for copyrighted console firmware.
Use legally obtained firmware
RetroArch and Libretro do not distribute copyrighted system files or game content. Use BIOS files dumped from hardware you lawfully own, or otherwise follow the law that applies where you live (Libretro BIOS guidance). Avoid “complete BIOS pack” downloads of uncertain provenance.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Open Settings → Directory → System/BIOS.
- Copy the extracted BIOS into that exact path.
- Read the selected core’s BIOS section.
- Match the filename, extension and MD5.
- Create only documented subfolders.
- Enable optional BIOS settings when required.
- Restart the core and test again.
