Yes—if a game is already installed on your Windows PC, the Xbox PC app may detect it automatically or let you add it as a library entry. The entry is a launcher shortcut, not an Xbox purchase: it does not transfer a Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, GOG or other license to Microsoft.
Xbox announced manual addition of installed games and apps on April 30, 2026, with options to customize names, icons, launch settings and command parameters. The announcement specifically describes the Xbox PC app experience on handheld devices, including ROG Xbox Ally models, so the control may not yet appear in every desktop installation.

What “add an existing game” means
The Xbox app combines several different concepts that are easy to confuse:

- Ownership: Your purchase or subscription remains with the service where you obtained it.
Xbox describes its PC app as a way to access installed games from other PC storefronts, while purchases and Game Pass downloads remain separate functions. See the Xbox PC app overview.

What you need before starting
- Windows 10 or Windows 11, version 22H2 or newer. That is the Xbox app requirement; each game has its own hardware requirements.
- The current Xbox PC app, updated through the Microsoft Store or its available update prompt.
- A Microsoft account signed in to the Xbox app.
- The game installed on a connected local or external drive.
- The original launcher—such as Steam, Epic Games Store, EA app, Ubisoft Connect, GOG Galaxy or Battle.net—still installed when the game requires it.
- Access to the game’s launcher or application entry. Packaged Microsoft Store and Xbox installations may not expose a normal browseable .exe.
The Xbox app itself lists 150 MB of storage and a 720p display as minimum app requirements. These figures do not describe the requirements for the game you are adding.
First let Xbox find the installation
Automatic discovery is the least troublesome route because it preserves the game’s expected launcher and installation metadata.
- Open the original storefront and launch the game once.
- Close the game, then open or restart the Xbox PC app.
- Check the library’s installed, ready-to-play or similar views, and remove filters that could hide non-Xbox titles.
- Confirm the installation drive is connected and that the Xbox app is signed in to the intended Microsoft account.
- Update the Xbox app and the original launcher if the title is still absent.
The app advertises aggregation of installed games from other PC storefronts, but detection is not guaranteed for every launcher, edition or executable.

How to manually add an installed game or app
Use this flow only when your current Xbox app exposes the manual-add feature. Xbox’s April 30, 2026 announcement confirms the capability but does not establish one universal desktop menu path.
- Open the Xbox PC app.
- Go to Library or My Library.
- Look for a control labelled Add game or app, Add to Xbox library, or a plus/add button. Labels can vary by app build and device.
- Select the installed game or application from the list presented. If the interface offers browsing, choose the title’s launcher or application entry rather than guessing at a protected Microsoft Store path.
- Confirm the addition.
- Open the new library tile and use its management or customization controls, when available, to change the displayed name or icon and configure launch behavior.
- Launch it from the Xbox library. A third-party launcher, sign-in window, DRM check or anti-cheat service may appear.
Do not assume that every game should point directly to a particular executable. Some games require a bootstrapper, launcher, working directory or special permissions, and Microsoft Store packages use a different installation model from ordinary desktop programs.
Customize names, icons and launch commands
Xbox says manual entries can support custom names, icons, launch options, mod parameters and special launch commands. Use only parameters documented by the game or its developer.

- Keep a record of the original launch target before changing it.
- Use parameters intended for the exact game edition and storefront.
- Test one change at a time so you can identify a failing option.
- Expect anti-cheat or DRM to reject modified startup parameters.
- Mods built for Steam, a standalone release or another PC Game Pass edition may not work with your copy.
- If an edit breaks startup, restore the default target and remove the added parameters.
Xbox has previously documented cross-version mod limitations, so “supports launch options” does not mean that every mod or command is compatible.

Games from Xbox, Game Pass and Microsoft Store
An Xbox app or PC Game Pass title that is already installed should normally be repaired or managed through the Xbox app, Microsoft Store and Gaming Services—not treated like a loose executable. Verify the signed-in Microsoft account, check for updates, and use the available repair, reinstall or install-management controls.
If a packaged title is missing from the Xbox library, manually browsing through Windows folders may fail because the installation is protected or registered differently. The correct fix is usually to repair its Xbox/Microsoft Store installation.

Console games are a separate case
Owning a digital Xbox console game, or having it installed on an Xbox console, does not add a playable local Windows copy to the PC library. The Xbox PC app separately offers cloud gaming and Remote Play; those functions stream or connect to a console rather than turning a console license into a Windows executable. The distinction is described on the official Xbox PC app page.
What happens when you launch a game from Xbox
The Xbox tile may simply start the game’s original launcher. You may need to sign in to Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, GOG, Battle.net or another service, and that launcher may remain open after the Xbox app is closed. Offline play, updates, DLC checks and account entitlement continue to follow the original storefront’s rules.

What manual addition does not do
- It does not move files into Xbox’s installation system.
- It does not create a Microsoft or Xbox purchase entitlement.
- It does not make a Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft or GOG game appear as owned in Microsoft Store.
- It does not remove the original launcher, DRM, account login or anti-cheat requirement.
- It does not guarantee Xbox achievements, Xbox cloud saves, cross-store save migration or Game Pass access.
- It does not make a Game Pass title permanently yours after it leaves the catalog.
- It does not automatically provide controller remapping or a handheld control profile.
An existing installation is not an existing save
Adding a shortcut does not move save files. Save compatibility depends on the individual game and its publisher account or storefront. Some games synchronize through their own services; others use local files or the original launcher’s cloud system. Do not assume that a Steam or Epic save will appear in Xbox cloud storage or PC Game Pass.

When another launcher is a better choice
Use the original storefront
Steam, Epic, EA, Ubisoft, GOG or Battle.net remains the best place for updates, DLC, achievements, cloud saves, Workshop content and storefront-specific settings.
Add it as a Steam non-Steam game
Steam’s official procedure is Add a Game… > Add a Non-Steam Game…. This can provide Steam Input, the overlay and Big Picture mode, but it does not transfer ownership or create Steam achievements. Follow Steam’s instructions.
Use a broader library manager
Applications such as Playnite or GOG Galaxy may suit users who want extensive metadata, filters and multi-store integrations. They are alternatives for cataloging, not replacements for the storefront that owns and updates each game.
Bottom line
Let Xbox detect an installed title first. If the current app and device show a manual-add control, add the game as a shortcut and customize it carefully. Keep the original launcher and account available, and treat the Xbox tile as a convenient library entry—not as a license transfer, installation migration or guarantee of saves, achievements or controller support.
