Before maintenance or disassembly, consult the current manual for your specific firearm and follow its instructions for lubricant, placement, amount, and any areas that must stay dry. The examples below show why it matters: Springfield Armory’s XD-S and Echelon pistol manuals specify different cautions and points from Maxim Defense’s MD11 rifle manual.
Before you lubricate: use the firearm’s own manual
Manufacturer instructions for one model should not be transferred to another. Use your firearm’s operation and safety manual for its unloaded-firearm checks, disassembly, lubrication, and reassembly. The points below are examples from named manuals, not a general procedure for every pistol or rifle.

- Confirm the manual matches your exact make and model.
- Follow the manufacturer’s lubricant and application instructions rather than assuming oil and grease are interchangeable.
- Check for components the manual says to keep dry or avoid.
Where should you oil a pistol?
Springfield Armory XD-S
The Springfield Armory XD-S Manual, under “Points of Lubrication,” specifies one drop at each side of the rear slide railways, at the top of the barrel’s chamber area, and on the top of the muzzle a quarter inch from its front. These are the XD-S manual’s model-specific directions, not a universal pistol lubrication recipe.

The same manual states: “DO NOT APPLY OIL OR GREASE TO STRIKER.” Keep this restriction attached to the XD-S instructions; check your own firearm’s manual for its restricted or dry areas.

Springfield Armory Echelon
The Springfield Armory Echelon manual also says not to oil or grease the striker. It warns that excess lubricant can attract dust and dirt. Follow the Echelon manual’s directions for its other lubrication points and amount rather than applying the XD-S steps to it.
Where should you lubricate a rifle?
Maxim Defense MD11 bolt-carrier assembly
The Maxim Defense MD11 manual names these bolt-carrier assembly lubrication points:
Rank #2
- High-viscosity oil refined to perfection
- Ideal for firearms, fishing reels and other precision mechanisms
- Extra-long lasting; Does not harden, gum or expire
- Includes one
- Made in the USA
- Inside rear of the bolt
- Gas rings
- Cam pin
- Locking lugs
- Bearing surfaces
- Ejector area
- Extractor and extractor pin
- Charging-handle body
Use the manual’s own directions for the lubricant and application at each point. This list applies to the MD11 instructions, not every rifle.
Maxim Defense MD11 lower receiver
The MD11 manual also identifies selected springs, pins, and detents in the lower receiver, and specifies grease for certain sear and disconnector surfaces. Consult the manual’s component-specific directions; do not treat this as a general lower-receiver grease map.

How much lubricant should you use?
More lubricant is not automatically better. Springfield warns in its Echelon manual that excess lubricant can attract dust and dirt. Maxim Defense’s MD11 manual says to leave only a sheen that does not run under gravity. Those cautions are specific to their respective models; use the quantity and method given in your firearm’s manual.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you use oil or grease?
There is no universal choice. The cited Springfield pistol manuals call for quality firearm lubricant, while Maxim Defense discusses grease for extreme conditions and specifies grease for certain MD11 sear and disconnector surfaces. Follow the exact manual’s recommendation for the component and conditions; do not substitute one lubricant type based on another firearm’s instructions.
Quick Recap

- SLIP 2000 GUN LUBE: Recommended for use on rifles, pistols, revolvers, and shotguns. Use like a metal treatment putting a thin coat everywhere. After firing 500 - 1000 rounds, simply wipe your gun clean just using Gun Lube.
- LUBRICATES: This gun lubricant penetrates tight spaces within your firearm and goes where other oils typically can't. Contains a proprietary anti-wear property that minimizes metal-to-metal contact, reducing friction/wear, preserving critical parts.
- CLEANS: Will aid in the removal of built up dirt, lead, copper, carbon, corrosion particles and firing residues that can build up and become abrasive to both recoil and gas operated mechanisms.
- PROTECTS: Unlike other gun oils, it penetrates and bonds with metal forming an protective barrier. This long-lasting barrier keeps carbon, lead, copper and plastic wad from sticking and building up, and reduces your cleanup time.
- SPECIALY FORMULATED: 100% pure synthetic lubricant and formulated without any petroleum, Teflon (PTFE) or Silicone ingredients. It will never gum up, never become sticky or tacky and does not attract dust dirt or sand.
