There is no single Django application log file. A standard Django project sends records to the console and, in some production configurations, email. A file is created only when your LOGGING settings, the WSGI server, or the hosting platform explicitly writes or retains one. Start with the terminal or service log stream, then inspect the active settings module for LOGGING and its handlers.

The exact location depends on how the application runs. The development server prints request messages in the terminal; a configured FileHandler writes to its configured path; Gunicorn and other WSGI servers use their own access and error-log settings; containers and system services usually collect standard output and error instead of creating a project file.

What Django logs by default
Django’s built-in logging configuration is enabled when a project starts, but it is not a promise of a file named django.log. The default setup uses console output and an email handler. Whether a particular record appears depends on its logger name, severity, filters, and the value of DEBUG.
Django’s logging how-to configures logging with a Python dictConfig-style dictionary in settings.py. Handlers determine destinations: a StreamHandler writes to a stream such as stdout or stderr, a FileHandler writes to a path, and other handlers can forward records to email or external systems. No handler with a filename means Django itself has not selected a local log file.

Where to look in development
The terminal running runserver
When you start the project with python manage.py runserver, watch the same terminal window. The django.server logger emits INFO-and-higher request messages to the console independently of DEBUG. You will normally see the HTTP method, path, status code, and response time there.
Other Django hierarchy messages follow the default rules tied to DEBUG. A traceback shown in the browser may therefore also appear in the terminal, while a low-severity diagnostic from your own module may remain hidden until you configure its logger and level.
If the terminal is empty
- Confirm that the process you are watching is the process serving the request; an IDE, supervisor, or container may own the real output stream.
- Check that the request reaches this Django instance rather than a proxy, another container, or a different environment.
- Look for a custom
LOGGINGdictionary that replaces or disables the default handlers. - Check logger and handler levels, plus
require_debug_trueandrequire_debug_falsefilters.
Finding a configured Django log file
Search the active settings
Open the settings module used by the running process, not only the base settings file. Search the project and imported settings modules for LOGGING, handlers, filename, FileHandler, StreamHandler, and rotating-handler classes such as RotatingFileHandler or TimedRotatingFileHandler.
For each handler, identify its class and destination. A plain logging.FileHandler writes to the value in filename. A rotating handler may rename or delete older files, so the current filename is only part of the answer; retention and rollover settings determine which historical files still exist.
Read relative paths correctly
A relative filename such as general.log is resolved against the process working directory. That is often the project directory during local development, which is why Django’s documentation example places general.log at the project root in that context. Under systemd, a container, an IDE, or a process manager, the working directory can be different. Determine it from the service definition or startup command before searching the filesystem.

}This example creates a file named general.log relative to the working directory and sends INFO-and-higher records from the django logger to it. It does not automatically capture every message from every library, and it does not define rotation. A production configuration should normally use an absolute, writable directory and an intentional retention policy.
Production deployments: inspect more than Django
WSGI servers
Django’s WSGI deployment model exposes an application callable that a WSGI-compliant application server invokes. Consequently, there are two logging layers to inspect: Django’s handlers and the server’s access/error logging configuration. A request can be recorded by the server even when no Django file handler exists, and a Python exception can be routed by Django, the server, or both.
Gunicorn
Gunicorn controls its own access and error logs through command-line options or a logging configuration file. Check the service unit, container command, and Gunicorn configuration for the configured destinations. Deployments commonly use - for an access-log or error-log destination, meaning the process stream; the container runtime or service manager then collects it. Flag names and defaults can vary by deployed Gunicorn version, so verify the effective configuration rather than assuming a file path.

--error-logfile -Those dashes send output to the process stream in the usual Gunicorn configuration. They do not create a file in your project directory. The retained copy, search interface, and expiration period belong to the platform collecting stdout and stderr.
Containers
With a StreamHandler, Django writes to stdout or stderr. Use the container runtime’s log command or dashboard to view those records. A bind mount is required if you deliberately write a file inside a container and need it to survive container replacement; otherwise, a local file can disappear with the container.

systemd services
A service launched by systemd commonly writes process output to the journal. Inspect the unit’s ExecStart, WorkingDirectory, environment variables, and any explicit redirection. The journal is then the first place to look, while a Django FileHandler still requires a separate path and permissions.
Hosted platforms
Many hosting providers capture application streams and expose them through a log viewer. Django does not prescribe the viewer, storage duration, search features, or alerting rules. If the platform captures stdout/stderr, configure Django and the WSGI server to emit useful records there, then confirm the platform’s retention and access controls.

Logger hierarchy matters. A handler attached to django can receive records from child loggers such as django.request, unless propagation is disabled. Conversely, a handler attached only to your project’s module logger will not automatically receive framework records.

A production site with DEBUG=False can therefore have no local file at all and still generate useful request and error records in a service journal, container log, or hosted log stream.

A reliable diagnostic sequence
- Reproduce the problem while watching the active stream. Use the terminal for
runserver, the Gunicorn or service log for a WSGI deployment, or the container/hosting log viewer. - Identify the settings module. Check the process environment and startup command so you inspect the settings actually loaded in that deployment.
- Search for logging configuration. Find
LOGGINGand list every handler, logger, level, filter, andpropagatevalue. - Match the logger name. Decide whether the record comes from
django,django.request,django.server, or a project module logger. - Check filters. Pay particular attention to
require_debug_trueandrequire_debug_false; they can discard a record before it reaches a destination. - Resolve the path. Convert relative filenames using the process working directory and check whether the directory exists.
- Verify permissions. The account running Gunicorn, systemd, or the container must be able to create and append to the file. A correct path with insufficient permissions produces no usable log.
- Inspect the deployment collector. If there is no file handler, check stdout/stderr collection in Gunicorn, Docker, systemd, Kubernetes, or the hosting provider.
- Confirm retention and redaction. Rotation may remove older entries, and sensitive request data should be excluded before logs are shipped or shared.
Configure a file without losing console visibility
Adding a file handler does not require removing the console handler. You can attach both to the same logger, selecting different levels or formats. Keep disable_existing_loggers deliberate, because disabling existing loggers can make framework or library messages appear to vanish.

}Create LOG_DIR during deployment and grant the service account write access; configuration alone does not create a missing parent directory. For high-volume applications, use a rotating handler or an external collector rather than allowing an unbounded file to fill the disk. Choose rotation size, time interval, and backup count to match the incident history you need.
Common reasons a log file is missing
No file handler exists
This is the most common explanation. Django is writing to a stream, email, or another configured destination, so searching the project tree cannot find a file.
The file is elsewhere
A relative path follows the service’s working directory, which may differ from the directory containing manage.py. Read the service definition or print the effective working directory from the running process context.

The logger level may be higher than the event, a handler level may filter it, or a debug-dependent filter may reject it. Logger propagation settings can also prevent a child record from reaching a parent handler.
The process cannot write
Check directory ownership, file permissions, security policies, read-only container filesystems, and disk capacity. Test with the same operating-system account used by the application, not with an interactive administrator account.
Rotation changed the name
Rotating handlers can append timestamps or numeric suffixes and remove older backups. List the entire log directory and inspect the handler’s rotation settings instead of looking for one fixed filename.

Django’s logging configuration can route records to files, external services, and email. The right destination is a deployment decision; the important point is to know exactly which layer owns storage and retention.

Application logs can contain URLs, user identifiers, stack traces, request headers, and data accidentally included in exception messages. Limit permissions on local files, avoid logging passwords or tokens, and review redaction before sending records to a shared system. Retention should reflect operational and legal requirements rather than the maximum space available.
The shortest path to your answer
Watch the process stream first. If the record is there, the platform—not Django—usually determines where it is retained. If it is not, inspect the active LOGGING dictionary, logger hierarchy, levels, filters, and propagation. A filename in a handler tells you what Django intends to write; the process working directory, filesystem permissions, rotation policy, and deployment collector determine whether you can actually find and keep that record.
