Keep port 80 open only long enough to redirect clients to HTTPS, validate the configuration before reloading, and use SNI-aware certificate selection when several hostnames share the listener.

What SSL termination at HAProxy does
In a terminating configuration, the browser or API client creates an encrypted TLS connection to HAProxy. HAProxy presents the certificate, completes the handshake, decrypts the request, and sends it to a backend server. The backend connection can remain ordinary HTTP on a private network, or you can configure a second TLS connection when encryption is required all the way to the application.

HAProxy’s official terminology is direct: the ssl argument enables TLS encryption, while crt identifies a PEM file containing the server certificate and private key. TLS is therefore enabled on the bind line, not in the backend definition.
Termination centralizes certificates, redirects, protocol handling, and renewal at the edge. It also means the HAProxy host has access to the private key, so filesystem permissions and administrative access on that host are part of the security boundary.

Prerequisites and decisions to make first
- A resolvable DNS name: the hostname must resolve to the Ubuntu host running HAProxy. Every name that clients use must be covered by the certificate’s subject or SAN entries.
- Reachable ports: allow TCP 80 for the redirect and certificate-validation paths you choose, and TCP 443 for normal HTTPS traffic, in both the host firewall and any upstream network firewall.
- An issued certificate: obtain a certificate whose names cover the public hostnames. A certificate for
www.example.testdoes not automatically coverapi.example.testunless that name is also present. - A known HAProxy version: certificate-store directives and some loading methods differ between releases. Check the configuration manual installed for your package before using newer directives.
- A backend target: decide whether HAProxy will send plaintext HTTP to a private application port or establish a separate TLS connection to the backend.
- Protected key storage: only the HAProxy process, or an administrative group that must load the service, should be able to read the private key.
Do not expose the backend application port directly to the Internet. Restrict it to the HAProxy host or the private network in which the proxy and application communicate.
Prepare the certificate and private key
For the simplest and most portable setup, create one PEM file containing the certificate chain followed by the private key. A typical file has this order:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
...server certificate...
-----END CERTIFICATE-----
-----BEGIN CERTIFICATE-----
...intermediate certificate, if supplied...
-----END CERTIFICATE-----
-----BEGIN PRIVATE KEY-----
...private key...
-----END PRIVATE KEY-----
Save the bundle in a directory reserved for HAProxy, such as /etc/haproxy/ssl/example.pem. The exact certificate-chain files supplied by your certificate authority vary, so preserve the provider’s chain order and do not add unrelated certificates.
Set ownership and mode for the account that runs HAProxy. Ubuntu package defaults can vary, so identify the service account on your installation before applying the commands:
sudo install -d -m 750 /etc/haproxy/ssl
sudo install -o haproxy -g haproxy -m 600 example.pem /etc/haproxy/ssl/example.pem
If your package uses a different service account or group, substitute those names. The important properties are that the HAProxy process can read the file and ordinary users cannot. Never place the private key in a world-readable directory or commit the bundle to a source-control repository.

HAProxy also supports separate certificate and key loading through certificate-store mechanisms on newer releases. Use that approach only when the installed version documents the required crt-store configuration. A combined PEM remains the least version-sensitive option.

Use the minimal Ubuntu configuration
The following complete pattern terminates TLS on 443, redirects clear-text requests arriving on 80, and sends traffic to an application listening on 127.0.0.1:8080:
global
log /dev/log local0
log /dev/log local1 notice
defaults
mode http
option httplog
timeout connect 5s
timeout client 30s
timeout server 30s
frontend https_in
bind :443 ssl crt /etc/haproxy/ssl/example.pem
default_backend app
frontend http_in
bind :80
http-request redirect scheme https unless { ssl_fc }
backend app
server app1 127.0.0.1:8080 check
Place the relevant sections in the configuration file used by your Ubuntu package, commonly /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg. Keep only one process listening on each public port. If another web server already owns port 80 or 443, stop it, move it behind HAProxy, or change the listener plan before restarting services.
The ssl_fc fetch checks whether the frontend connection is already using SSL/TLS. On the port-80 frontend it is normally false, so the request receives an HTTPS redirect. The condition also prevents an accidental redirect loop if the rule is reused in a frontend that can receive encrypted traffic.
Install and activate the configuration safely
- Confirm the package and service. Install HAProxy using the Ubuntu package source appropriate for your release, and record the installed version. The service unit and available directives can differ between Ubuntu releases.
- Create the certificate directory. Create
/etc/haproxy/ssl(or your chosen path), copy the PEM bundle there, and apply ownership and permissions that allow HAProxy to read the key but deny other users. - Edit the configuration. Add the global, defaults, frontend, and backend sections shown above, replacing the certificate path and backend address with your values. If your application listens on another host, use its private address and port instead of loopback.
- Parse before reloading. Run the parser supplied by the installed package:
sudo haproxy -c -f /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg
A successful check reports that the configuration is valid. Errors commonly identify a misspelled directive, an unreadable PEM file, a duplicate bind, or a backend line with the wrong address. Fix every error before touching the running service.

- Reload through Ubuntu’s service manager. Use the reload action for the HAProxy unit on your system, for example
sudo systemctl reload haproxy. If your package uses a different unit name or does not provide a reload action, confirm the unit definition and use its documented graceful-reload method rather than killing active connections. - Check service status and logs. Verify that the process remains active after the reload and inspect HAProxy’s configured log destination for bind, certificate, handshake, or backend errors.
- Test both entry points. Request
http://hostnameand confirm a redirect to the same hostname with anhttps://scheme. Then openhttps://hostname, inspect the presented certificate and chain, and exercise an application URL that reaches the backend.
Redirect HTTP to HTTPS correctly
The redirect frontend needs no certificate because it listens on port 80. This is the essential rule:
http-request redirect scheme https unless { ssl_fc }
HAProxy retains the original host and URI while changing the scheme, so a request such as http://example.test/login becomes an HTTPS request for the same path. Keep port 80 reachable when users may type an HTTP URL or when an ACME validation method needs the public HTTP endpoint.
If an upstream proxy sits in front of HAProxy, make sure the request’s real scheme and host handling match your deployment. Do not add a second, conflicting redirect at the application layer until you have confirmed which component owns the canonical URL; otherwise clients can encounter loops or repeated hops.
Serve several domains with SNI
When several hostnames share one IP address and port 443, clients send a Server Name Indication (SNI) value during the TLS handshake. HAProxy compares that name with the certificates loaded on the bind and selects a certificate whose CN or SAN matches it.
You can load multiple PEM bundles by repeating the crt argument:

default_backend app
For larger sets, HAProxy supports a certificate directory and a crt-list. Newer releases also provide certificate-store methods. These choices change how certificates are discovered and managed; they do not change the need for correct DNS names and readable private keys.
Always define a deliberate default certificate for an unmatched SNI name. Use default-crt, or the documented default marker for your crt-list, so a client that sends an unknown hostname receives a known certificate rather than whichever file happens to be selected first. The default certificate should be a controlled, valid certificate for an intended hostname, not an accidental production key.
| Certificate loading style | Best fit | Operational consideration |
|---|---|---|
Single crt PEM |
One public hostname or a small deployment | Simple to audit; certificate and key travel together in one protected file. |
Repeated crt arguments |
A few hostnames on one listener | Easy to read, but the bind line grows as certificates are added. |
| Certificate directory | Many certificates managed as individual PEM files | File naming, permissions, and reload procedures need consistent administration. |
crt-list |
Explicit per-certificate selection rules | Use the syntax and default marker documented for the installed HAProxy version. |
crt-store and related newer methods |
Modern certificate inventories and automated management | Check release support before deploying; legacy forms may be safer for compatibility. |
Choose how HAProxy connects to the backend
| Backend mode | Traffic path | When it is appropriate | What to verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| HTTP after termination | Client TLS → HAProxy; HAProxy HTTP → application | The proxy and application communicate on a trusted, isolated network and the application does not require end-to-end encryption. | Firewall the backend port, restrict access to HAProxy, and ensure sensitive traffic does not traverse an untrusted segment. |
| Re-encrypted backend | Client TLS → HAProxy; HAProxy opens a second TLS session → application | Regulatory, architectural, or network requirements demand encryption between the proxy and origin. | Install a certificate trusted by HAProxy, configure the backend’s TLS settings for the installed release, and decide how hostname and certificate verification will be performed. |
The minimal example uses the first mode. Re-encryption is a separate TLS client configuration on the backend side; do not assume that enabling ssl on the public bind automatically encrypts the origin connection.

Manual PEM replacement works for a small service but requires a renewal calendar and a controlled reload. HAProxy’s ACME workflow documents certificate storage, domain declarations, validation, and deployment for Let’s Encrypt.
Before adopting automation, confirm all of the following:
Best Value
- The installed HAProxy version supports the directives used by the workflow.
- The selected ACME challenge can reach the required public endpoint from the Internet.
- DNS for every requested name points to the host that can answer the challenge.
- TCP 80 or 443 is reachable as required by the challenge type, and no other service intercepts the validation request.
- The resulting certificate and key are written to a location HAProxy can read, with permissions no broader than necessary.
- A successful renewal triggers a configuration check and graceful reload so the new certificate is actually presented.
Test renewal in a non-production name first. A certificate appearing on disk is not proof that HAProxy is serving it; verify the live endpoint after deployment and inspect logs for reload or file-permission failures.
Validate the live service
Use a short, repeatable check after every certificate replacement or configuration change:

sudo haproxy -c -f /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfgand require a successful parse. - Confirm HAProxy is listening on TCP 80 and 443 and that no competing process owns those ports.
- Request the HTTP URL and verify that it redirects to HTTPS without changing the hostname or path unexpectedly.
- Connect to the HTTPS hostname and inspect the certificate subject, SAN list, expiration, and chain.
- Request a health endpoint or normal application page and confirm the backend responds.
- For SNI, test each hostname separately. An incorrect default certificate can be hidden if you test only the first name in the list.
- Review HAProxy logs for TLS alerts, backend connection failures, timeout events, and repeated health-check transitions.
Troubleshooting common failures
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Parser says the certificate cannot be opened | The path is wrong, the PEM file is absent, or the HAProxy account lacks read permission. | Check the path character by character, verify ownership and mode, and confirm the file contains certificate and key material in the expected order. |
| HAProxy will not bind to 443 | Another process already listens on the port, or a previous HAProxy instance is still running. | Identify the existing listener, stop or reconfigure the competing service, then parse and reload again. |
| Browser reports a name mismatch | The requested hostname is not in the certificate’s CN/SAN entries, or SNI selected the wrong bundle. | Issue a certificate covering the exact name and check each crt entry and the configured default certificate. |
| Browser reports an incomplete chain | The PEM contains only the leaf certificate and omits the required intermediate certificate. | Rebuild the bundle with the provider’s certificate chain followed by the private key, then reload. |
| HTTP redirects repeatedly | A second proxy or application rewrites the scheme back to HTTP, or the redirect rule is applied without correct scheme information. | Identify which layer owns the canonical redirect, remove the conflicting rule, and verify the frontend receiving the request. |
| HTTPS works but the application returns 503 | The backend address or port is wrong, health checks fail, or the application is not listening. | Test the backend from the HAProxy host, correct the server line, and inspect health-check and timeout logs. |
| One hostname works while another shows the first certificate | The second certificate was not loaded, does not contain the requested SAN, or the client did not send the expected SNI name. | Check the repeated crt entries or certificate inventory, verify the certificate names, and test the hostname directly. |
| Renewed certificate is not visible | The renewal wrote a new file but HAProxy was not reloaded, or HAProxy cannot read the new file. | Run the parser against the active configuration, perform a graceful reload, and inspect the live certificate and service logs. |
Operational and security checklist
- Use DNS names that resolve to the correct public address before requesting certificates.
- Open only the public ports required for HTTP validation and HTTPS service; keep application ports private.
- Keep private keys readable only by HAProxy and the administrators who must maintain the service.
- Store the certificate chain and key in the order expected by the configured loading method.
- Use a deliberate default certificate for unmatched SNI names.
- Run the configuration parser before every reload and treat warnings about deprecated directives as migration work, not harmless noise.
- Choose plaintext or re-encrypted backend traffic according to the trust level of the network between HAProxy and the application.
- Document renewal ownership, the validation endpoint, the reload command, and the live-certificate check.
- After changes, test HTTP redirection, each SNI hostname, the certificate chain, and a real backend request.
When this pattern is the right fit
A single PEM bundle and one TLS frontend are appropriate for one hostname and a straightforward Ubuntu deployment. Repeated certificates, a directory, or a crt-list become easier to manage as names multiply. Certificate-store methods and ACME automation are better suited to larger inventories, provided the installed release supports them and the validation and reload path is tested.
The central rule does not change: HAProxy terminates TLS only when the public bind includes ssl and points to usable certificate material with crt (or the version-appropriate certificate-store configuration). Everything else—redirects, SNI selection, renewal, and backend encryption—must be validated around that listener.
