Snapchat’s documented speedometer icon is in Director Mode. It controls how quickly the camera captures video for creative effects; it does not display a car’s current speed. Snapchat’s former travel-speed overlay, called the Speed Filter, was removed in 2021.
How to change camera speed in Snapchat
- Open Snapchat to the Camera screen.
- Tap the Director Mode control.
- Tap the speedometer icon.
- Choose a camera capture speed, then record your video.
Snapchat describes Camera Speed as a way to set the speed at which the camera captures, supporting precise transitions and dramatic effects. Its Camera Speed instructions do not list the available speed choices, so the exact options may depend on what the app shows you.

Why the speedometer does not show driving speed
The Director Mode speedometer changes video capture speed. It is not a live vehicle-speed measurement or an overlay of how fast you are traveling.

That distinction matters because Snapchat once had a separate Speed Filter that showed travel speed on a Snap. Snap announced its removal in June 2021. At the time, Snap’s spokeswoman told iMore the feature “is barely used by Snapchatters” and said the company was removing it altogether, as reported by iMore on June 17, 2021.

Camera Speed, Filters, and Lenses are different

Snapchat’s support pages explain the difference between Filters and Lenses. If you are looking for a missing time or temperature overlay, Snapchat advises checking the sticker drawer; that is separate from Camera Speed.
What to do if the speedometer icon is missing
Snapchat documents the Director Mode path, but its Camera Speed help page does not explain differences by phone platform, account, region, or app build, or promise a particular fix when the control is absent. Check that you are on the Camera screen and looking inside Director Mode. If the item you cannot find is a Lens rather than the Camera Speed control, use Lens Explorer to look for Community Lenses; Snapchat notes that Lens availability changes over time.

Why the old Speed Filter was removed
Contemporary coverage described the former travel-speed overlay as a feature for sharing how fast someone was moving. Reporting in 2021 also recounted earlier safety-related changes, including making the feature less prominent, adding a “Don’t Snap and drive” warning, and limiting it to 35 mph.
