For ROM hacks, start with PokéCommunity’s moderated ROM Hacks Studio, then follow the individual creator’s current patch and installation instructions. For standalone fan games, itch.io is a useful discovery platform because you can browse, search, filter by tags, and inspect each creator’s release page. Neither site guarantees that every project is safe, complete, current, or compatible, so treat the listing as the beginning of your checks rather than the final word.
The most important distinction is what you are downloading: a ROM-hack patch modifies a specific original game, while a standalone fan game is its own executable or game package. A patch is not the original game file, and reputable communities should not provide complete commercial ROMs or directions to obtain them.

ROM hack or standalone fan game?
Use this distinction before clicking Download. It determines which files you need, what compatibility information matters, and whether an emulator or patching tool is involved.

A patch cannot run by itself. It is designed for a particular base-game file, often identified by title, region and revision. A standalone fan game may run on Windows, macOS, Linux or another platform without an original cartridge, ROM dump, emulator or patcher; only the creator’s instructions can establish that.

PokéCommunity ROM Hacks Studio for ROM hacks
PokéCommunity’s ROM Hacks Studio is an approval-moderated showcase rather than an unfiltered file index. Its rules, identified as updated July 2026, require a playable release to provide a patch or replacement files and identify the base game. Project threads are also expected to explain the project, show screenshots and list credits. Those requirements make a thread useful for discovery and for checking what the author says you need.
The same rules prohibit posting, directing users to, or linking to commercial ROMs. Look for the project’s patch, not a “complete ROM” copy hosted by a mirror. A listing that points you toward a full commercial game, uses a chain of unrelated download pages or replaces clear instructions with a shortened URL is not following the showcase’s stated model.
itch.io for standalone fan games
itch.io supports browse pages, search, recommendations and project tags, so it is practical for finding independent fan games and related projects. Its creator guidance encourages accurate platform labels, relevant tags and direct uploads. The site has described itself as hosting more than 1 million projects; that figure is a total project count, not a count of fan games or ROM hacks.

Use an itch.io page as a discovery and verification point. Read the creator name, supported operating systems, current version, release notes and installation instructions before downloading. itch.io’s policies address malware, spyware and adware, and discourage obtrusive advertising and third-party login walls, but a platform policy is not a forensic inspection of every file. A particular upload can still be outdated, broken or poorly documented.
Creator-owned pages and repositories
If a community thread or itch.io listing links to a developer’s own site or code repository, compare the release version and installation notes there with the listing. A creator-controlled page may contain a newer patch, compatibility warning, checksum or known-issues list. This is a verification step, not a guarantee that every developer maintains a separate site or repository.
How to screen a project before downloading
- Identify the project type. Confirm whether the file is a ROM-hack patch or a standalone game. A patch is intended for a named base game; it is not the base game itself.
- Read the complete project description. Look for the creator, release status, version number, screenshots, credits and a description of what has actually been completed. A thread with only a title and a download button gives you too little information to judge compatibility.
- For a patch, record the exact base requirement. Note the original game title, region or language and revision. If the author supplies an MD5 or CRC32 hash, compare it with your legally obtained base file before patching. A file with the wrong revision can fail to patch or produce glitches even when the title appears correct.
- Use the project’s own download path. Prefer the patch or replacement files attached to the community or creator page. Do not follow links to complete commercial ROMs, mirror collections or instructions for obtaining them.
- Check freshness. Compare the release date and version on the listing with any creator page or repository. Read change logs and known limitations. A project marked as a demo, work in progress or abandoned should not be treated as a finished release.
- Check platform details for a standalone game. Confirm the operating system, architecture, required runtime, controller support and installation method. Do not assume that a ROM patcher, emulator or original cartridge is needed for a PC fan game.
- Inspect the link and installer behavior. Stop if a page has no identifiable creator, demands an unrelated login, hides the file behind several redirects, launches an unexpected installer or asks you to disable security software. PokéCommunity’s rules disallow URL shorteners in its showcase, and itch.io discourages obtrusive ads and third-party login walls.
- Scan and preserve your system state. Keep your operating system and security software current, scan downloads, and avoid running unknown executables as an administrator. Back up save files before testing a new build.
These checks reduce avoidable risk, but they cannot prove that a file is harmless or that a project will work on your hardware. Recommendations based on a platform’s rules are not a substitute for inspecting the specific release.

Applying a ROM-hack patch safely
Every hack can use a different patch format and tool, so follow the creator’s stated method rather than assuming one universal workflow. The sequence below covers the decisions that matter in nearly every case.
- Obtain the required base game through a lawful source available to you. The community rules governing a showcase do not settle copyright, backup or emulation questions in every country.
- Match the file precisely. Check the named title, region or language and revision. If a hash is provided, calculate the hash of your file and compare it before making changes.
- Make a clean backup. Keep an untouched copy of the base file and patch a duplicate. This lets you retry with a different revision without losing the original.
- Use the patch format and tool specified by the author. IPS, UPS, BPS and other formats are not interchangeable. The project’s instructions should tell you which file goes into the patcher and what output filename to expect.
- Test the patched output separately. Start with the emulator or hardware configuration recommended by the creator. Confirm that the title screen, save function and early gameplay work before investing time in a long playthrough.
- Keep the release notes. Record the patch version and any emulator settings. If a later update changes the required base revision, you will know which file produced your save.
Common patch failures
- “Wrong file” or patcher error: the base game may be from another region, language or revision, or it may already have been modified. Recheck the stated hash and start with a clean copy.
- Black screen or immediate crash: verify that the emulator or hardware supports the game’s original system and that you applied the correct patch format. Read the project’s compatibility notes before trying random settings.
- Glitches after an update: confirm that your save belongs to the same patch version. A new release can change data structures or require a fresh playthrough.
Installing a standalone fan game
- Read the operating-system and hardware requirements first. Confirm the supported platform and whether a runtime, graphics component or controller driver is required.
- Download the release for your platform. Prefer the creator’s direct upload or the clearly identified release file on the project page. Avoid packages that include unrelated software.
- Verify the version and release notes. Note whether you are installing a demo, stable build, experimental build or archived release. Look for save-location details and known issues.
- Extract or install as instructed. Some games run from an extracted folder; others use an installer. Do not grant administrator access unless the creator’s instructions and your operating system require it.
- Launch a test session. Check display settings, audio, controls and saving before changing configuration files. If the game fails, keep the error message and system details for the developer.
A standalone game should not ask you to supply a commercial ROM unless its own documentation explicitly defines a different project type. If the instructions are ambiguous, return to the listing and creator page rather than downloading an additional file from an unrelated site.
Comparing a promising listing with another one
When several projects look interesting, compare them on the same practical criteria instead of choosing by download count alone.

These criteria describe useful signals, not a certification system. A moderated listing can become stale, and an attractive page can still contain an incompatible or unsafe file.

Use specific wording rather than searching only for “ROM hacks.” Add the original game title, the region or revision, the patch format, or the target operating system. Examples include:
[game title] ROM hack patch [region][project name] BPS patch release notessite:itch.io fan game [operating system][project name] official repository compatibility
Search phrases such as “Where is the best place to download fan games and rom hacks?” or “Which Pokémon ROM hack sites are actually official?” describe what people ask, but the wording itself does not establish that a site is official or safe. Verify the individual project page.
Copyright and availability limits
A patch-style release and a complete commercial ROM are different downloads. PokéCommunity’s published rules permit patch-style releases in its showcase and prohibit commercial ROMs and directions to them. That forum policy does not answer every legal question about making personal backups, emulation or copyright exceptions. Laws and licensing differ by country, so avoid treating the presence of a patch as permission to obtain a base game from an unauthorized source.
Projects and links change quickly. Before downloading, revisit the live listing, confirm that the version and instructions still match, and check whether the creator has replaced an old build. If the page no longer identifies the author, requirements or release status, choose a better-documented project.
A practical decision path
- Want to modify an original console game? Start with a moderated ROM-hack showcase such as PokéCommunity ROM Hacks Studio.
- Want a game that runs as its own PC or desktop project? Browse itch.io, then inspect the creator’s page, version and platform requirements.
- Have you found a download? Determine whether it is a patch or a standalone package before opening it.
- Are the author, requirements and current version unclear? Do not guess. Find the creator’s instructions or select another listing.
The safest practical pattern is simple: discover through a platform with visible submission or publishing guidance, verify the individual creator’s release, download only the files the project describes, and keep the base-game and copyright questions separate from the technical patching steps.
