1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsYou cannot look up an official sales total for most Steam games. Valve does not publish game-by-game sales or revenue to the general public, so outside estimates use proxies such as Steam reviews, player counts, seller rank and any sales figures a developer has disclosed. The quickest transparent calculation is estimated units = relevant review count × an explicitly stated reviews-to-units multiplier. Treat the result as a range, document the assumptions and keep estimated units separate from revenue.
What you can—and cannot—know from public Steam data
Steam store pages expose review counts, review sentiment, release dates, prices and some player-facing information. They do not expose an authoritative lifetime sales or revenue total for every game. A number shown by a public analytics site is therefore a model output unless the developer or publisher has disclosed the figure.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
That distinction matters when you compare games, assess a potential acquisition or estimate the size of a market. A modeled figure can be useful for directional analysis, but it is not equivalent to Valve’s internal accounting. For a game you do not control, label every result as an estimate and identify the metric being estimated.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Paid Steam units: copies bought directly through Steam, if the model is designed to measure that.
- Owners: a broader count that may include gifts, bundles, giveaways or free-weekend entitlements, depending on the provider.
- Players: people who launched or played a title; this is not the same as copies sold.
- Gross revenue: modeled sales value before platform fees, taxes and other deductions.
- Developer receipts: the money retained after discounts, refunds, taxes, platform fees and other commercial adjustments; public review data cannot establish this directly.
Steamworks gives developers access to their own revenue and units through a Sales Data API. That is authoritative for an authorized developer, but it does not make arbitrary games’ figures public.

The basic review-count (Boxleiter) estimate
Let R be the relevant Steam review count and M be the chosen reviews-to-units multiplier:
Estimated units = R × M
The calculation is intentionally simple. Its credibility comes from explaining where M came from and showing a range instead of presenting one precise-looking total.
A historical worked example
In a May 4, 2018 article, Jake Birkett analyzed more than 50 premium indie games. He reported an average of 82 sales per review, a median of 77, and an observed range of 30 to 150 sales per review. For a game with 1,000 relevant reviews:
| Multiplier used | Calculation | Illustrative units |
|---|---|---|
| Sample median, 77× | 1,000 × 77 | 77,000 |
| Sample average, 82× | 1,000 × 82 | 82,000 |
| Low end, 30× | 1,000 × 30 | 30,000 |
| High end, 150× | 1,000 × 150 | 150,000 |
These are illustrations of that historical sample, not a current universal conversion rate or a statistical confidence interval. The wide 30×–150× spread is the important message: selecting a single multiplier can move the answer by several times.
What Birkett counted
Birkett used Steam sales rather than retail sales from Steam keys and used the All Reviews figure displayed on a game’s Steam store page. He said that figure filters out reviews from people who obtained the game through a Steam key. He excluded games launched before Steam reviews began in November 2013. He also warned that the observations could contain errors and should not drive critical business decisions.
He reported additional historical slices: a 71× average and 64× median after excluding 2014 launches, and a 63× average and 65× median for 2017 releases. The 2017 calculation used only eight data points, so neither slice should be reused as a present-day calibration without checking it against comparable games.
How to choose a multiplier without pretending it is universal
Start with a sample that resembles the game you are estimating. A premium single-player indie title released recently should not automatically inherit the same ratio as a free-to-play multiplayer game launched years earlier. If you cannot justify a narrow comparison, use a broad range and say why.

Release era and review behavior
Reviewing habits and the composition of Steam’s audience change over time. Birkett observed lower ratios for later launch years in his sample and offered changing review habits and game mix as possible explanations. That observation does not prove a causal rule, but it does show why a 2018 sample should not be presented as a timeless Steam average.

Genre and audience
Genre can influence how often buyers leave reviews, but a universal genre correction has not been established. A niche game with a highly engaged community may generate reviews at a different rate from a mass-market title. Genre adjustments used by public estimators are modeling choices, not a proven law of review behavior.
Price, rating, team size and reach
Some heuristics adjust for initial list price, positive-review percentage, studio size and genre keywords. These variables may correlate with review rates or audience reach, but an adjustment belongs to the model that defines it. Do not transfer a coefficient from one estimator into another calculation unless the estimator documents that use.
Small, new and free-to-play games
- With very few reviews, one review changes the estimate substantially; the sample is too small for a stable ratio.
- Very new releases may have not yet accumulated reviews or may be experiencing an unusual launch spike.
- Free-to-play games often have weaker sales estimates because reviews do not capture monetization or the size of a free user base.
- Review manipulation, coordinated review campaigns or unusual key distribution can distort the proxy.
A documented alternative: indielist’s heuristic
Version 1.0 of the indielist estimator defines a median estimate as review count multiplied by an adjusted NB multiplier. Its documented adjustments use release year, initial US-dollar list price, positive-review percentage, studio-size tier and a primary-genre keyword rule. The formula clamps the resulting multiplier to 15×–150×.

Step-by-step: build a transparent estimate from a Steam page
- Define the metric. Decide whether you want paid Steam purchases, owners, all players or a revenue proxy. Write the definition at the top of your worksheet.
- Record the review count. Capture the store page’s All Reviews total and the date and time. Do not silently substitute recent reviews, written reviews from another platform or a third-party count.
- Record context. Note release date, current list price, launch price if known, positive-review percentage, genre, free-to-play status, studio size and whether the game is sold in bundles or distributed through keys.
- Choose a comparison set. Prefer games with a similar business model, release era, audience and price. If your sample is historical or small, state that limitation.
- Pick a low and high multiplier. Use a median or central value for the middle scenario and a wider interval when the title is new, small, free-to-play or unusual.
- Calculate the range. Multiply the review count by each multiplier. Keep the arithmetic visible so another reader can reproduce it.
- Write the qualification beside the result. Include the sample, date, unit definition and exclusions. Never publish a bare number without those labels.
- Cross-check. Compare the result with player-count or seller-rank signals and with at least one other documented estimator. Treat agreement as supporting evidence, not proof.
Worksheet example
| Field | Example entry | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Review count | 1,000 All Reviews on the store page | Input to the proxy; record the observation date |
| Low multiplier | 30× | Historical low end in Birkett’s premium-indie sample |
| Middle multiplier | 77× | Historical sample median, not a universal current rate |
| High multiplier | 150× | Historical high end in that sample |
| Estimated units | 30,000–150,000; midpoint illustration 77,000 | Report the range before any revenue calculation |
Why two reasonable estimates can disagree
Public dashboards do not all count the same thing or use the same inputs. Compare their definitions before deciding that one is wrong.
| Comparison question | What to check | Effect on the result |
|---|---|---|
| What is counted? | Owners, direct Steam purchases, paid units or players | Broader owner/player metrics can exceed paid Steam copies |
| What period is covered? | Lifetime, launch month, first year or a selected date | Different windows cannot be compared directly |
| Are keys and bundles included? | Key activations, external bundles and giveaways | Some totals include entitlements that were not direct Steam purchases |
| Are discounts and regional prices modeled? | Historical sale depth, regional mix and refunds | Revenue estimates can differ sharply even with similar unit estimates |
| Which signals are used? | Reviews alone, concurrent players, seller rank, disclosed sales | Extra signals may change the estimate but add assumptions |
| How is accuracy described? | Independent validation or provider-reported performance | Vendor claims should not be treated as official accuracy guarantees |
| Are edge cases flagged? | Small, new, free-to-play or review-manipulated titles | These categories generally require a wider range |
Gamalytic’s documented approach
Gamalytic says it combines Steam top-seller rank, concurrent-player data, an adjusted Boxleiter method using regression factors such as release year, review score and average playtime, and publicly disclosed sales data. The service reports that smaller games are less accurate, free-to-play estimates are generally less accurate and revenue may omit external sources or misestimate Steam bundles. Those are the provider’s own method and accuracy statements, not Valve figures.
Gamalytic also distinguishes owners from copies sold: its owner definition can include giveaway, bundle and free-weekend ownership, while its copies-sold definition refers to direct Steam purchases and excludes key-activated units. Confirm which field you are reading before comparing it with another source.
PC Games Data’s documented approach
PC Games Data describes combining review counts, adjusted multipliers and concurrent-player cross-checks. Its methodology says it continuously calibrates against publicly disclosed data. It lists exclusions including non-Steam sales, microtransactions and external bundle or key sales, and warns that very new games may be unstable and that review manipulation can affect accuracy. Its estimates and confidence categories are the site’s own claims, not official Steam disclosures.

Use dashboards as triangulation, not a vote
Two dashboards may share the same public review count or similar assumptions, so matching outputs are not independent confirmation. If outputs diverge, widen your range and explain whether the disagreement comes from owners versus paid copies, different periods, key and bundle treatment, or different discount assumptions. Choosing the most convenient number is not a validation method.
Turning estimated units into a revenue model
Do not multiply lifetime units by today’s list price and label the product revenue. That shortcut ignores price history, sale discounts, regional pricing, refunds, taxes, keys, bundles, downloadable content, in-game purchases and platform fees. As Birkett wrote, “You still can’t estimate revenue using this number because you don’t know how many sales are from discounts and how big those discounts were.”
A defensible gross-revenue framework
- Set the period. Specify lifetime, launch year, a calendar year or another window.
- Estimate paid units for that period. Do not use a lifetime review count with a one-month price history.
- Build an effective price. Weight the historical list prices, sale discounts and regional mix that applied during the period.
- State exclusions. Identify whether refunds, keys, bundles, DLC, in-game purchases and external stores are included.
- Calculate gross modeled revenue. Multiply estimated paid units by the effective price and label the output before platform fees and taxes.
- Do not infer net receipts. A platform split, tax treatment and payment adjustments require information that public review counts do not provide.
For example, if your unit estimate is 30,000–150,000 but you have no reliable discount or regional-price history, report the unit range and say that a revenue point estimate is unsupported. A wide modeled revenue interval is more honest than multiplying by today’s price. PC Games Data describes incorporating historical discounts and regional prices in its own model, while Gamalytic distinguishes gross revenue from other owner, unit and player measures; those descriptions do not establish a universal calculation that can be reproduced for every game.
When a limited-period estimate may be less fragile
Birkett suggested that a newer game may be easier to approximate over a limited period such as its first month or first year because it may have experienced fewer discounts. That is a qualified observation from his 2018 analysis, not a guarantee. The period still needs a documented price and regional mix.

Using one ratio for every game
Problem: A single 70× or 80× multiplier is presented as if it were a Steam rule.
Correction: Identify the sample, use a range, and explain why the game’s release era and business model resemble—or differ from—the sample.
Confusing reviews with buyers
Problem: The article treats every review as a fixed number of unique purchases.
Correction: Call reviews a proxy. Record whether the count is All Reviews and whether the chosen model excludes key-activated copies.

Making a critical business decision from a proxy
Problem: A rough estimate is used alone for investment, staffing or acquisition.
Correction: Seek developer or publisher disclosure, contractual records or authorized Steamworks data. Birkett’s warning is direct: “Please don’t base any critical business decisions on it.”
What counts as authoritative?
For a developer with the required access, Steamworks’ Sales Data API provides revenue and units data programmatically. That is the appropriate source for the developer’s own title. For an outside observer, an official statement from the developer or publisher is stronger evidence than a dashboard model, and a dashboard model is stronger when it clearly defines its inputs and limitations than when it presents an unexplained point estimate.

For revenue, add the period, effective-price assumptions, regional and discount treatment, and the words gross modeled revenue before platform fees and taxes. If those inputs are unavailable, stop at the unit estimate rather than manufacture precision.

The bottom line for readers
- Review counts can support a reproducible estimate, not an exact sales report.
- Birkett’s historical premium-indie sample produced a 77× median, 82× average and 30×–150× observed range; those figures are not a current universal ratio.
- Release era, audience, genre, price, studio size, review sentiment and distribution channels can change the relationship between reviews and units, but many adjustments remain model assumptions.
- Units and revenue are different calculations. Discounts, regional prices, refunds, taxes, keys, bundles, DLC, in-game purchases and platform fees must be addressed before modeling revenue.
- Public dashboards are useful for triangulation, especially when their definitions are transparent, but small, new, free-to-play or review-manipulated titles need extra caution.
- Only authorized Steamworks access or a developer’s disclosure provides authoritative sales and revenue data for a specific game.
