Flint comes mainly from gravel: break gravel blocks and some will drop flint instead of gravel. A shovel is the quickest tool for collecting gravel, and Fortune improves the chance of getting flint. Avoid Silk Touch, which makes gravel drop as a block rather than flint. You can also sometimes find flint in a village fletcher chest.
Get flint by mining gravel
Find exposed gravel and break it; gravel can appear in many places, so do not limit your search to shorelines. Minecraft’s official Taking Inventory: Flint article describes gravel as the main source and mentions lake-shore gravel as an example, not an exclusive location.

Each gravel block may drop gravel or flint. The Minecraft Wiki’s gravel reference says any tool can break gravel, but a shovel is quickest. That is community-reference guidance, not an official benchmark for every current edition and version.
Improve your chances with the right tool
- Use Fortune: Fortune increases the chance that gravel drops flint. Exact probabilities vary across community references and may depend on edition or version, so there is no single percentage to treat as universal.
- Do not use Silk Touch: Silk Touch prevents flint from dropping from gravel.
- Without an enchantment: Keep breaking gravel and collect the flint drops. The ordinary-gravel probability is reported as 10% by community references, but their version coverage is unclear; treat that figure as edition- and version-dependent rather than guaranteed.
Other ways to obtain flint
Check village fletcher chests
A village fletcher chest may contain flint, but this is an occasional possibility, not a guaranteed item in every village. Mojang’s official flint overview identifies these chests as an alternate source.

Trading and other loot
The Minecraft Wiki’s flint reference also describes villager trades and loot from structures. Availability and trade details can vary by edition and version, and the available official guidance does not establish a universally reliable trade or loot route. If you need flint now, gravel mining is the straightforward option.

What flint is used for
- Arrows: Flint is a crafting ingredient for arrows.
- Flint and steel: Combine flint with an iron ingot to make this item.
