Where to Find and How to Verify PDP-1 Software and Emulator Files

A practical guide to finding PDP-1 paper-tape software, choosing a MAME or SIMH loading path, and understanding what catalog records can—and cannot—verify.

For authentic PDP-1 software, start with the Computer History Museum (CHM) for collection records and historical context, then use a compatible emulator’s documentation to locate and load digital paper-tape images. A catalog entry can help identify a tape, but it does not prove that a downloadable image contains the same data or is intact.

Where to find PDP-1 software

Use the Computer History Museum to identify material

The CHM PDP-1 Software page describes the restoration project and why the paper-tape reader mattered: most PDP-1 software was distributed on paper tape. The CHM PDP-1 archival finding aid describes collection material from 1959–1976 and points readers to the Museum’s catalog for paper-tape records. The collection was fully processed during 2005–2006; the finding aid gives no publication date.

The finding aid lists 388 software paper-tape catalog records. They were transcribed from what was written on tape labels, not machine-read to verify the tapes’ contents. Treat them as discovery leads, not as proof that a particular image is authentic, complete, or error-free.

Find emulator-ready images through MAME’s guide

The MAME Developer Wiki PDP-1 driver guide links a digital paper-tape software archive and gives a Spacewar example. The guide was last modified on 2023-02-20. Its linked archive is a practical route to explore, but the guide does not establish that every image is currently available or independently verified.

Choose an emulator path

MAME and SIMH document different routes to running PDP-1 programs. The available documentation does not establish a universal winner; choose based on whether the desired program is available, whether its image format is supported, how it is loaded, and what device or emulation fidelity it needs.

Route What the documentation provides What to check
MAME The PDP-1 guide documents launching with mame pdp1, links a paper-tape archive, and gives a Spacewar example. Confirm the program is in the linked software set and follow the guide’s reader interaction. The guide warns that MAME may lack something needed to emulate some programs perfectly.
SIMH The PDP-1 manual documents simulated devices and loading RIM- and BLK-format tapes. Match the image’s actual format to the loader rather than assuming a renamed extension converts it.

Run the documented MAME Spacewar example

  1. Follow the MAME guide’s setup and launch the PDP-1 with mame pdp1.
  2. For the documented Spacewar route, use mame pdp1 spacewar.
  3. Use the paper-tape reader action described in the guide to load the tape.

These are documented instructions, not a guarantee that a particular current installation or image will work unchanged.

Rank #2

Load a tape image in SIMH

The SIMH PDP-1 Simulator Usage manual, dated 2008-12-01, documents the LOAD command. It assumes files ending in .BIN are BLK format; other files default to RIM format. Examples in the manual include LOAD lisp.rim and LOAD -B macro.blk. These defaults are loader conventions, not verification of file contents: renaming an image does not convert it from one format to another.

How to assess a PDP-1 tape image

No single catalog label or successful-looking filename establishes that a digital image faithfully represents an original tape. Assess provenance, format, and behavior separately.

  • Start with provenance. Compare the image’s description with CHM collection records or other documentation. Remember that CHM’s 388 records were transcribed from labels, not machine-read from the tapes.
  • Check for corroboration. Look for the program in the emulator’s documented software list or archive and compare its name and description with archival material.
  • Check format compatibility. Determine whether the image is RIM or BLK and use the corresponding documented loader behavior.
  • Observe documented loading behavior. A load that follows the emulator’s instructions is useful evidence that the file is usable in that setup, but it does not prove that it matches an original tape byte for byte.
  • Do not infer a checksum. The cited sources do not provide independent hashes for individual images or a comparison against original tapes.

What a failed launch does—and does not—tell you

MAME’s guide cautions that its emulation may be missing something needed to run some programs perfectly. A failed launch therefore does not, by itself, show that the historical tape or image is corrupt. Check that the image is supported, the expected reader action was performed, and the program’s required device behavior is represented before drawing conclusions.

The cited material does not establish that either emulator has been tested here against specific downloads, provide a current operating-system support comparison, or identify the newest SIMH release as of 2026. The SIMH v3.12-3 repository announcement is dated 2022-12-12 and describes that version as current at that time; it is not evidence of latest status today. See the SIMH v3.12-3 repository for that dated statement.

Useful PDP-1 context

The CHM PDP-1 specifications page lists an 18-bit word length and 28 single-address instructions; it does not state a publication year. The finding aid also identifies a 1963 Programmed Data Processor-1 Handbook among the collection’s manuals. These references can help interpret historical material, but a manual or catalog record is not a substitute for checking an emulator image’s format and provenance.

If you redistribute SIMH software or substantial portions of it, preserve the license notice and its conditions. The manual’s license statement grants broad permissions subject to those conditions.
