There is no universal interval for polling a health monitoring API. Choose a cadence that meets the endpoint’s freshness requirement while staying within that API’s documented quotas and retry rules. When a service returns a throttle response, honor its instructions, back off for eligible transient failures, and avoid retrying in a way that multiplies load.
How often should you poll a health monitoring API?
Set the interval per endpoint, not by adopting a blanket “health API” frequency. Start with how quickly your application needs to reflect new data or a status change, then check the endpoint’s documentation for its supported polling behavior, quota scope, reset window, pagination, and any server-directed wait.

Estimate request volume across all users, endpoints, and concurrent workers. Include pagination and expected retries in the estimate, and check each applicable quota: a project-wide limit can be reached even when individual users appear below their own limits. If a webhook, change-tracking mechanism, or notification can meet the freshness requirement, prefer that to repeated reads where appropriate.
A specific 10-second example—not a general rule
For Cloud Healthcare API long-running operations, Google says to poll operation status and gives a backoff “such as 10 seconds” as an example. Continue only until the operation’s done field is true, then inspect its result or error. This guidance is for long-running operation status checks; it does not establish a cadence for ordinary health-data reads. Google Cloud: Long-running operations.

Do not confuse data-sync guidance with polling cadence
Google Health API guidance describes an initial “hot” load of recent 7–14 days, background processing for older history, and date-range chunking for specific rollup endpoints. These are data-sync recommendations and endpoint-specific constraints, not a standard interval for live polling. Google Health API: Health data sync.
How do API rate limits work?
A rate limit may be scoped to a project, user, application, or individual API, and may use a short window, a daily window, or both. The same request pattern can therefore be acceptable under one quota and throttled under another. Treat every published figure as specific to its service and configuration; do not transfer another provider’s limit to your integration.

Google Cloud Monitoring also documents multiple possible causes for 429 RESOURCE_EXHAUSTED, so the status alone does not identify which quota or resource was exhausted. Consult the service’s response details and quota documentation rather than assuming a single universal meaning. Google Cloud Monitoring quotas.
What should you do when an API returns 429?
- Read the response and the provider’s contract. Identify the affected quota or resource from the response details and documentation. Check whether the response includes
Retry-Afteror a quota-reset time. - Wait as directed. When the API specifies
Retry-After, wait for that duration before retrying. Follow any provider-specific instructions for a reset time or repeated throttling; these details differ between services. - Reduce or spread request volume. Avoid immediate retries. Slow the poller, limit concurrent workers, and use a queue or client-side rate limiter if requests are generated by multiple processes.
- Retry only within a bound. Set an attempt cap or elapsed-time deadline, monitor queue age if work is queued, and stop or alert when the bound is reached rather than retrying indefinitely.
Provider instructions are not interchangeable
Microsoft Graph recommends waiting for the duration in Retry-After and retrying; if the header is absent, it recommends exponential backoff. Microsoft Graph: Throttling.

GitHub’s guidance is specific to its limits: wait for Retry-After, or for the reset time when the remaining primary quota is zero. Otherwise, its documentation says to wait at least a minute and increase waits for repeated secondary throttling. Do not apply these timings as defaults for a different API. GitHub REST API: Rate limits.
How should retries work for transient failures?
Classify failures using the API’s documented contract. A network failure or eligible 5xx response may be transient; authentication, authorization, and invalid-request errors generally call for fixing the request or credentials, not repeating the same call. NHS England Digital advises interpreting response status, using backoff especially for transient 5xx and network failures, and respecting platform limits. Some NHS 503 responses include Retry-After, expressed as seconds or a date-time. NHS API Platform: Error handling.

Use bounded exponential backoff with jitter
Exponential backoff increases the wait after successive failed attempts; jitter adds a random variation so many clients do not retry together. Google Cloud Healthcare API’s truncated exponential backoff example uses waits of approximately 1, 2, and 4 seconds, with a fresh random fraction of up to one second added to each wait. It caps the wait at a configured maximum and stops at a deadline. Google notes that typical configured maximum waits may be 32 or 64 seconds; those are example values, not universal requirements. Choose a cap and deadline for your own workload and API contract. Google Cloud Healthcare API: Data ingestion throughput best practices.

Make retries safe for the operation
Before retrying a mutating request, establish whether the operation is idempotent and how duplicate submissions are handled. A retry after a timeout can arrive even if the server completed the first request. For long-running operations, inspect the existing operation’s completion and error state before deciding whether to submit new work; do not blindly restart it. Google Cloud: Long-running operations.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When should you replace polling with notifications?
Use a webhook, change-tracking feed, or notification when the API offers one and it can satisfy the application’s freshness and reliability needs. Event-driven updates can avoid repeated reads when nothing has changed. Microsoft Graph and GitHub both recommend event-driven alternatives where available. Microsoft Graph: Throttling; GitHub REST API: Rate limits.
Polling can still be appropriate when notifications are unavailable, when periodic reconciliation is needed, or when the endpoint represents work that must be checked for completion. In those cases, tune the interval to the endpoint and quota, and avoid synchronized schedules across clients.

Quick Recap
Operational checklist for a poller
- Record each endpoint’s freshness need and its documented quota scope and reset window.
- Estimate combined request volume across users, pages, and workers; include retries.
- Honor server-provided wait instructions and use provider-specific reset guidance.
- Use backoff with jitter for eligible transient failures; bound attempts or elapsed time.
- Verify idempotency and duplicate handling before retrying writes or restarting work.
- Track throttles, retry counts, queue size, and queue age; define when to stop and alert.
