For a txAdmin-managed RedM server, the active configuration is the server.cfg inside the server data directory selected for that server profile. The fastest way to verify the exact file is to open txAdmin and go to Settings → FXServer; compare the displayed path with the file you intend to edit. Back up both the server data folder and txAdmin’s txData directory before changing anything.
What the active RedM configuration file is
RedM uses the FXServer configuration format. The main file, normally named server.cfg, contains the game-server settings that FXServer reads when it starts. It commonly holds resource startup lines such as ensure, server variables, network endpoints, and references to other configuration files.

On a server managed through txAdmin, the authoritative file is not necessarily the first server.cfg you find in an extracted server archive. During txAdmin’s existing-server setup, you select a server data directory and its configuration file. That selected path becomes the file used by the server profile. If you edit another copy, your changes can appear to do nothing because FXServer is reading a different file.

- Sign in to the txAdmin panel for the RedM server.
- Open Settings.
- Select FXServer.
- Find the configured
server.cfgpath and copy or note it exactly. - Open that path in the host’s file manager, terminal, or text editor. Check the filename carefully so you do not edit a file ending in
.bkpor another backup suffix.
The path shown under Settings → FXServer is the quickest practical test when several server folders exist. It also resolves confusion caused by reinstalls, copied profiles, provider migrations, or an old configuration left beside the current one.

Where txAdmin stores its data
txAdmin creates a txData directory for its account information, configuration, database, and logs. This directory is separate from the game server data directory and should be included in your backup plan.

These paths describe txAdmin’s data, not a guarantee that your active server.cfg is inside txData. Always use the FXServer path shown in txAdmin to identify the configuration file itself.
Three ways to edit the configuration

For a managed profile, txAdmin’s CFG editor is usually the least error-prone option because it keeps path confirmation and validation close to the edit. Direct editing remains appropriate when you need to change included files or use versioned backups, but path verification is your responsibility.

1. Plan a maintenance window
Stop the server or schedule maintenance according to your hosting setup before making changes. Configuration values read at startup will not affect a running FXServer until the relevant reload or restart occurs. On a public server, announce the interruption if players are connected.
2. Back up both required locations
Make a copy of the complete server data directory and the txAdmin txData directory. The server data copy protects resources and configuration; the txData copy protects txAdmin’s account, database, panel configuration, and logs. Keep the backup outside the directory being edited and label it with the date and server profile.

3. Open the verified file
Use txAdmin’s CFG editor or a plain-text editor. Do not use a word processor, because it can insert formatting that FXServer cannot parse. Confirm that the editor opened the exact path reported under Settings → FXServer.
4. Make one logical change at a time
Preserve existing resource startup lines, server variables, endpoint declarations, and included configuration statements unless you are intentionally changing them. Keep comments and indentation that help you identify ownership, but remember that the configuration parser still requires valid command syntax.

Run the txAdmin CFG editor’s validator after saving. Correct syntax or path errors it reports before starting the server. Validation is especially useful after editing multiple ensure lines, variables, or include statements.
6. Restart only when the setting requires it
Apply the change using the restart or reload action appropriate to your host and the setting. If you restart, watch the live console from the beginning of the boot sequence. Look for missing resources, invalid configuration messages, endpoint binding failures, or database errors.
7. Confirm the result in-game and in the console
Check the specific behavior you changed rather than assuming a clean boot proves success. A server can start while a resource fails later, an included file is skipped, or a variable is overridden by another command.

What belongs in server.cfg and what belongs elsewhere

Environment variables in the TXHOST_* family are read before FXServer starts. Putting one of these values in server.cfg is too late to configure the txAdmin listener or other host-level behavior. Change those values in the hosting environment or the provider’s startup controls instead.

Windows and Linux launch context
Windows
From the extracted FXServer artifact directory, Windows launches the executable named FXServer.exe. When FXServer is launched without a +exec server.cfg argument, txAdmin starts automatically. If a provider supplies a startup action, use that action and verify the resulting configuration path in txAdmin rather than assuming the executable directory is the server data directory.
Linux
From the extracted artifact directory, Linux launches with ./run.sh. As on Windows, txAdmin starts automatically when FXServer is launched without a +exec server.cfg argument. The directory containing run.sh is relevant to the default txData location, but it is not proof that the active game configuration is stored there.
Managed hosting
A hosting provider may supply the startup command, allocated ports, and txAdmin URL. The provider’s control panel can abstract away the filesystem, so use its file editor only after confirming the server profile and then compare the path shown under txAdmin’s Settings → FXServer. If the panel does not expose the path, ask the provider which server data directory is attached to the profile.

Why server.cfg changes do not take effect
You edited the wrong copy
This is the most common cause when multiple profiles, extracted artifacts, or backups exist. Recheck Settings → FXServer, compare the complete path, and make sure the filename is not a .bkp backup.
The setting needs a restart
Many FXServer configuration commands are read during startup. Save the file, validate it, and perform the required restart or reload through txAdmin or your provider. Then check the first console lines for the profile and resources that actually loaded.
An included file still contains the old value
A server.cfg can include other configuration files. Search the active file for include statements and inspect each referenced file. A later command or included file can override an earlier value, so test the complete load order rather than only the line you edited.
The validator or console reports a syntax problem
Return to the last change, correct malformed commands, unmatched quotes, or invalid paths, and run the CFG validator again. Do not repeatedly restart an unvalidated file; each failed boot can create a longer and less clear error trail.
A resource fails even though FXServer starts
Review the live console for missing resource directories, failed dependencies, or database errors. An ensure line can be syntactically valid while the named resource is absent or unable to initialize. Restore the previous working line from your backup if the change introduced the failure.
The port is unavailable
Check the endpoint declarations against the ports allocated by the hosting provider. The commonly used FXServer value is TCP and UDP 30120, but your provider may assign different ports. A configuration that names an unallocated port can prevent binding even when the rest of the file is valid.
You changed a TXHOST setting in the wrong place
Panel listener and host bootstrap controls are read before FXServer starts. Move those values to the host environment or provider startup configuration; editing server.cfg will not change them.
Recovery and rollback procedure
- Stop the server or place it in maintenance mode.
- Save the failing file separately so you can inspect the change later.
- Restore the last known-good
server.cfgfrom the dated server-data backup. - If txAdmin itself is affected, restore the corresponding
txDatabackup according to your host’s recovery process. - Open the restored file in txAdmin’s CFG editor, run the validator, and start the server.
- Review the console for the original error before attempting the change again in a smaller, isolated edit.
Keep secrets such as database credentials out of public posts and restrict filesystem permissions on backups. Direct text-editor access is powerful, but anyone who can read the file may be able to read credentials stored in it.
Practical checklist before every change
- Confirm the server profile and the exact
server.cfgpath in Settings → FXServer. - Verify that you are not editing a
.bkpor inactive profile copy. - Back up the complete server data directory and txAdmin’s
txDatadirectory. - Decide whether the change belongs in
server.cfg, txAdmin settings, or aTXHOST_*host environment variable. - Use a plain-text editor or txAdmin’s CFG editor.
- Run the CFG validator after saving.
- Restart or reload only as required, then inspect the live console.
- Test the specific setting and keep the dated backup until the result is confirmed.
The short answer
Find the active RedM configuration by opening txAdmin and checking Settings → FXServer. Edit the server.cfg at that exact path, not an adjacent backup or copied artifact. Back up the server data and txData, validate the file, apply the appropriate restart, and use the live console to verify what actually loaded.
