Check what is included and add shipping before deciding: a low listing price can become a poor deal if the set is incomplete or delivery is costly.
Identify the exact set and a realistic price
Retired sets are generally secondary-market purchases, so begin with the set’s name and number. Searching by number helps you avoid mixing up similar versions and makes listings easier to compare. BrickLink’s marketplace includes sets, parts, and minifigures; its price guide is recommended as a reference for recent actual sale prices. Treat that data as a benchmark, not a guaranteed price for the listing you are considering.

Compare recent completed sales for the same set and condition rather than anchoring on the highest asking price. There is no universal fair price: condition, completeness, market, and delivery cost all matter, and both listings and sale prices can change between your search and purchase.
Choose the buying route that fits your priorities
| Route | Useful for | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| BrickLink | Set-specific listings, parts, and marketplace comparison | Recent-sale reference, seller feedback, condition, completeness, and shipping. |
| Specialist reseller | Buyers who value inspected or curated inventory | Any premium against the stated condition and completeness; confirm the seller’s policies. |
| eBay | A broad marketplace of listings | Completed sales for the same set and condition, seller record, and shipping. |
| Facebook Marketplace or another local listing | Local search and the possibility of inspecting a set in person | Verify contents and condition before paying, and understand the transaction protections available where you live. |
| Used set or separate parts | Builders who do not need sealed packaging | Missing pieces, replacement-part cost, number of orders, and combined shipping. |
Compare condition and the full delivered cost
Compare new and sealed listings with other new and sealed listings; compare used sets with used sets. A sealed set is not a like-for-like price comparison with an opened one. For used listings, read condition notes and check whether the seller says the set is complete. Confirm whether instructions are included if you want them, and review seller feedback before committing.

Add shipping and other stated delivery charges to the item price. A listing with a lower sticker price may cost more overall once shipping is included. If you are sourcing missing pieces from multiple sellers, compare the total cost of the parts and the separate shipping charges; combining orders from one store may reduce delivery costs.
When a used set or parts route makes sense
If your goal is to build and display the model rather than collect sealed packaging, a used complete set may be better value than paying a sealed-collector premium. If the set is incomplete, a parts route is another option: first establish which pieces are missing, then compare replacement-part costs and shipping against buying a more complete set. Neither route is automatically cheaper; availability and price depend on the specific set and pieces.
