Choose based on whether the provider offers your preferred domain ending, its renewal cost, and where you want to manage renewals and DNS—not only on a first-year offer. You do not have to buy hosting and a domain from the same company.
Where can you buy a domain for a WordPress site?
If your site is on WordPress.com, you have three routes: register a new domain there, transfer an existing domain to WordPress.com, or keep it at its current registrar and connect it to your site. WordPress.com documents connecting domains on its Personal, Premium, Business, and Commerce plans; a free site needs an upgrade to use a connected domain. Plan terms can change, so check the current WordPress.com plans and pricing before choosing.

You can also register with a separate domain registrar. That can be useful if the registrar offers the exact extension you want or you prefer to keep registration and renewals separate from your website account. ICANN explains that registering a generic top-level domain involves an agreement between you and the registrar. Its accredited registrar directory can help you find registrars for generic top-level domains; accreditation is not a guarantee of the lowest price or best service.

Connecting is usually the simpler choice if you want to keep the registration where it is. A transfer makes sense if you want registration management and the site in one account, provided WordPress.com supports that extension and the transfer meets the registrar’s requirements. What to compare before buying
- Extension availability: Check that the provider supports the exact ending you want. WordPress.com notes that an extension not available for registration or transfer through its platform may still work if you register it elsewhere and connect it.
- Renewal price: Compare the continuing cost, not just an introductory or first-year price. WordPress.com says renewal prices for existing domains may differ from the original registration or transfer price. Prices also vary by extension and currency; use its current domain price table for your market rather than assuming one price applies to all domains.
- Management preference: Decide whether you want to manage registration and website settings together or keep renewals with a separate registrar. When you connect a domain, the registration remains with the registrar even though DNS is managed through WordPress.com.
- Bundling: Some companies sell both domains and hosting, but the two purchases do not have to be bundled. For a WordPress.com site, a domain from another provider can be connected where your plan allows it.
- Terms and support: Review the registration agreement, renewal and transfer rules, and how the provider handles domain management. ICANN says registrants should be able to get information about registering, managing, transferring, renewing, and restoring a domain.
How to connect a domain from another provider
WordPress.com supports connection using nameservers or DNS records; the precise instructions depend on the registrar. Before changing nameservers, check whether the domain also supports custom email or other services, since DNS changes can affect them. WordPress.com’s instructions for a domain registered with Bluehost recommend DNS-record setup if you have custom email you do not want to interrupt or cannot change nameservers. Follow the instructions for your own registrar rather than assuming its settings match Bluehost’s.
- Confirm that your WordPress.com plan supports connecting an external domain.
- Choose whether to use nameservers or DNS records based on the registrar’s instructions and any email or other DNS services you need to preserve.
- Apply the required settings at the registrar, then complete the connection in your WordPress.com account.
- Allow time for the changes to take effect. In the documented Bluehost setup, WordPress.com says changes can take up to 72 hours to become fully functional and SSL issuance may take up to 24 hours; those timings apply to that setup path and are not a guarantee for every provider.
When is WordPress.com a good choice?
Register directly through WordPress.com if it supports your desired extension and you want domain and site management in one account. Some annual or multi-year plans include a new domain free for one year, subject to current plan conditions; check the live offer and renewal price before relying on it. If WordPress.com does not offer your extension, or you would rather manage registration elsewhere, use another registrar and connect the domain if your plan permits.

A registrar that also sells hosting can be convenient when you are choosing both services. For example, Bluehost advertises .com registration, external domain connections, and automatic renewal on its product page. Those are the provider’s claims, not an independent comparison or evidence that it is the cheapest or best option. Compare the terms and ongoing price for the specific domain you want.
