Project Zomboid keeps the active server’s user data separately from the Steam or SteamCMD installation. Start in the Zomboid folder belonging to the account that launches the server: Windows normally uses C:Users<username>Zomboid, while Linux normally uses ~/Zomboid (for example, /home/steam/Zomboid for a service running as steam). Dedicated-server settings are in Zomboid/Server; the persistent multiplayer world is in Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>.
Prefer not to run the server on your own PC? Godlike.Host offers hosted Project Zomboid servers with free DDoS protection and up to three free backups a day.
Project Zomboid server paths at a glance
The location is determined by the operating-system account and environment that starts the server, not simply by where the game files were installed. A Windows service, Linux systemd unit, SteamCMD account, container, or hosting panel can therefore produce a different user-data path from the one you expect.

What is stored in the Zomboid user-data folder?
The user-data directory is the part that matters for an active server. It contains configuration profiles, saves, logs, and other generated data. The game or SteamCMD installation directory mainly contains executable and installed-content files. Reinstalling or updating the server binaries does not by itself identify or preserve the world; the user-data directory is the item to locate and back up.

Dedicated-server profiles
Profile files live in Zomboid/Server. If the launch command loads a profile called servertest, the usual files are:
servertest.inifor server behavior, connection limits, and other server options.servertest_SandboxVars.luafor world rules such as loot distribution, zombie settings, time progression, water shutoff, and player-versus-player behavior.servertest_spawnpoints.luaandservertest_spawnregions.luawhen that profile has spawn data.servertest_Zombies.inior other build-specific files when the current game branch creates them.
The prefix is significant. A profile named survival uses survival.ini and survival_SandboxVars.lua, not the servertest files. The server reads the profile named in its launch configuration, so changing an unused file has no effect.
Persistent multiplayer world
The dedicated world is stored below Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>. The final directory identifies the server or world name used when it was created. It contains the persistent map and gameplay state, so copying only an INI file does not constitute a complete backup.
Keep the world directory paired with the profile files that created it. Sandbox rules, spawn definitions, server settings, and mods can affect how the save is interpreted. A world copied without its matching profile may start with unexpected rules or fail to reproduce the original setup.
Additional multiplayer state
Not every multiplayer artifact is necessarily represented by one obvious world file. Build 42 tooling documents a map_visited_server item under the save and client-side <profile>_player data for explored-map and player-related state. If you are moving a Build 42 setup, inspect the complete save tree and the relevant client data instead of selecting a single file by name.

How to identify the active profile before editing
The most reliable way to avoid a no-op change is to determine the profile loaded by the running service, then edit files with that exact prefix.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
- Stop or temporarily pause the server administration process so the configuration cannot be rewritten while you inspect it.
- Open the service definition, startup script, scheduled task, or hosting-panel launch field.
- Look for the server profile argument or the name supplied when the server was created. Record the exact spelling and capitalization.
- In the account’s
Zomboid/Serverdirectory, find the INI and SandboxVars files with that prefix. - Check their modified times after a controlled change and restart. If the timestamp and in-game behavior never change, you are probably viewing a different account’s directory or a different profile.
For a profile called servertest, the expected pair is servertest.ini and servertest_SandboxVars.lua. Do not assume those names apply when the startup configuration uses another profile.
Finding the files on Windows
Use the account that runs the server
Sign in as the Windows account that starts the dedicated server, or inspect the service’s “Log On” account. Browse to C:Users<username>Zomboid, then open Server for configuration or SavesMultiplayer for world directories. An administrator account may see a different Zomboid folder from the account used by a scheduled task or service.
Search when the expected folder is absent
- Confirm that the server has started at least once under the account you are checking; the folders may not exist before first launch.
- Search the relevant user profiles for a folder named
Zomboid, then compare the contents and modification dates with a known restart. - Check whether the service uses a redirected profile, a container-mounted directory, or a hosting panel that exposes a separate data volume.
- Inspect the launch command for a profile name that differs from
servertest.
Do not edit a copy inside the installation directory merely because it is easier to find. The active settings are the files in the launching account’s user-data tree.
Finding the files on Linux and SteamCMD installations
Resolve the service account’s home directory
For a Linux server launched by the steam account, the usual root is /home/steam/Zomboid. More generally, use the home directory of the account that owns the server process, represented as ~/Zomboid. A root-launched process, a dedicated service user, a container user, and an interactive shell user can all have different home directories.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
- Inspect the service or startup script and identify the account used to run the process.
- Resolve that account’s home directory rather than relying on the home directory of your current login.
- Open
Zomboid/Serverfor the profile files andZomboid/Saves/Multiplayerfor the world. - If neither exists, check the service’s working directory, environment settings, container volume mounts, and hosting-panel file browser.
SteamCMD installs the server binaries in one location, but it does not make that installation location the save location. The account’s generated Zomboid directory remains the important place for active configuration and world data.
Permissions and ownership
Use the service account’s permissions when copying or editing files. A backup made as another user can become unreadable by the server after restoration if ownership and permissions are not preserved. Stop the service before changing ownership, and verify that the account can read the restored profile and write to the save directory.
Why changing a Zomboid config appears to do nothing
You edited the wrong profile
This is the most common cause. The server may load survival.ini while you edit servertest.ini, or it may use a profile generated by a hosting panel. Match the filename prefix to the profile named in the launch configuration.
You edited the wrong operating-system account
On Windows, a service account can have a separate user profile. On Linux, an interactive administrator shell may point to a different home directory from the steam service user. Locate the process owner and inspect that account’s Zomboid directory.

The server was still running
Some settings are read at startup, and a running process may retain the old values. Stop the server cleanly, make the edit, start it again, and verify the result in a test session. Avoid editing while the process is writing the save.

The setting belongs in SandboxVars rather than the INI
Connection and server behavior generally belong in the profile INI, while loot, zombie population, time, utilities shutoff, and PVP rules belong in <profile>_SandboxVars.lua. Changing one file while expecting a setting controlled by the other can produce no visible change.
A hosting panel or container maps another volume
The path shown inside a container may not be the path on the host. Use the panel’s file manager or inspect volume mappings, then identify which mounted directory contains the profile and save that the process actually opens.

A dependable backup captures the world and the configuration that defines it. Follow this sequence for a local move, migration to another machine, or routine archive.
- Stop the server cleanly. Use the normal shutdown command or service stop action and wait until the process exits. Do not copy an actively changing world.
- Record the active profile. Save the exact profile name from the launch command or service configuration.
- Copy the world directory. Back up
Zomboid/Saves/Multiplayer/<server>, including its complete contents and subdirectories. - Copy the matching profile files. Include
<profile>.ini,<profile>_SandboxVars.lua, spawn-point and spawn-region files, and any build-specific files such as<profile>_Zombies.iniwhen present. - Record mod and Workshop identifiers. These settings are separate from the world directory. Preserve the profile’s mod configuration and the identifiers needed to obtain the same content on the destination.
- Restore into a test profile first when possible. Use a distinct profile or destination copy so the original remains untouched while you verify the migration.
- Start and validate. Confirm that the server reaches its ready state, then join with a client and check the map, player data, rules, and mod-dependent areas before replacing the production copy.
For a Linux move, preserve the destination account’s ability to read and write the restored files. For Windows, restore under the account that will launch the service. A backup is not complete until the destination can start and load the intended world.
Dedicated server versus an in-game or listen host
The same broad user-data concept applies when a player hosts from the game, but operational details differ. The following distinctions explain why a listen host can appear to have different files from a dedicated service.
Best Value
| Operational concern | Dedicated server | In-game or listen host |
|---|---|---|
| Persistence when the host exits | The separate server process can continue running after a player disconnects, subject to its service configuration. | The session generally depends on the host’s game process; ending that process ends hosting. |
| User-data location | Uses the Zomboid directory of the service account, which may be different from an administrator’s or player’s account. |
Uses the hosting player’s user-data context. |
| Profile-file control | Dedicated profiles in Zomboid/Server provide explicit INI, SandboxVars, and spawn files. |
Settings are managed through the host’s game configuration and generated multiplayer data. |
| Backup responsibility | The operator should back up the multiplayer world together with matching profile files and mod identifiers. | The hosting player must preserve the relevant local multiplayer data and settings. |
| Process account | Often a separate Linux or Windows service account, especially on rented or panel-managed servers. | Usually the interactive player’s account. |
If you are moving from an in-game host to a dedicated process, identify which save and profile the new process should load instead of assuming that installing the dedicated binaries automatically discovers the old session.

Mods are not interchangeable with the world directory. A save may refer to Workshop items or mod identifiers that are absent on the destination. Preserve those identifiers from the active profile and make the same content available before testing the restored world.
File sets can vary by game branch. The standard INI, SandboxVars, and spawn files are the stable starting point, while files such as <profile>_Zombies.ini may appear only for particular builds. Treat the files generated by the active branch as authoritative; do not delete unfamiliar profile files simply because an older guide does not mention them.
Verification checklist after a move or edit
- The process owner and destination
Zomboidroot are confirmed. - The launch command references the profile whose files you edited.
- The world directory under
Saves/Multiplayeris the intended server save. - The INI and SandboxVars files have the same profile prefix as the launch configuration.
- Spawn and build-specific profile files were copied when present.
- Mod and Workshop identifiers are preserved and available.
- The server was stopped before copying and restarted after the change.
- A client can join the restored instance and sees the expected map, rules, and player state.
Once these checks pass, archive the original before deleting or overwriting it. Keeping one untouched copy gives you a recovery point if a profile mismatch or incompatible mod appears later.
