For a modded Minecraft Java Edition dedicated server, put mod files in a mods folder inside that server’s own installation directory—the folder containing the server or loader JAR, eula.txt, and startup files. For example, a Fabric server installed in C:mc-server uses C:mc-servermods.

This is separate from the client’s .minecraftmods folder. A client-only mod must remain in the client instance, while a server mod belongs in the dedicated server directory. Loader, Minecraft-version, and dependency checks must all pass before the server can load a JAR.

Find the correct server folder
Self-hosted dedicated server
Open the directory where you installed the dedicated server loader. You are in the right place when you can see the server or loader JAR alongside files such as eula.txt and the generated startup files. The server’s mods directory is a child folder of this location.
On Windows, a typical Fabric layout is:
C:mc-server
├─ server or loader JAR
├─ eula.txt
├─ server.properties
└─ mods
└─ compatible-mod.jarIf the loader has not created mods yet, create a folder named exactly mods beside the server JAR. Do not create it in your personal Documents folder or in the global client directory unless that is also where the dedicated server files actually live.

Managed hosting panel
A hosting panel normally presents the server installation directory as its file manager’s root. Open that root, locate the folder containing the server or loader files, and place JARs in its mods subfolder. Panel names differ, so use the panel’s file manager rather than assuming a path from a local Windows, macOS, or Linux installation. If the panel lets you select a Minecraft version or loader, those selections still have to match every mod you upload.
Do not confuse the server with the client
The game you launch to join a world is a client instance. The process that hosts the world is a dedicated server instance. They can have different directories, Java installations, and mod lists. Copying a JAR into the client’s folder does not install it on the server, and copying every client JAR to the server can prevent startup.

Client mod-folder paths
Fabric documents these default locations for the official launcher’s client instance:

These paths apply only when the launcher uses its default game directory. A custom launcher or a custom Game Directory moves the folder to that installation’s own mods subdirectory. For a per-instance launcher, open the instance settings and inspect its Game Directory before copying files; never assume the global .minecraft path is active.

Check compatibility before copying anything
Select the loader the mod supports
Fabric, Forge, and other loaders are separate installation models. A mod built for Fabric is not automatically a Forge mod, and selecting a loader that the mod does not support will usually produce a load error or a crash. Choose the loader first, then download the corresponding server installer and mod files.
Match the exact Minecraft version
Read the mod’s release information and match its Minecraft version to the version configured for the server. A file made for one Minecraft version may fail on another even when the difference appears small. Fabric’s guidance specifically warns that version compatibility must be checked rather than assumed.
Confirm Java Edition and server-side role
This workflow concerns Minecraft Java Edition dedicated servers. Classify each mod as server-side, client-side, or usable on both sides. Server-side content belongs in the server’s mods folder. Client-only visual or interface additions stay in the client instance; the Fabric server tutorial gives OptiFine as an example of a client-only file that should not be copied to a dedicated server.
Read the dependency list
Many mods require another library or API. The project page should identify those dependencies and the versions they support. Fabric documentation names Modrinth and CurseForge as common places to obtain mods and recommends checking each project’s dependency information. If a required library is absent, the server may stop with a missing-dependency message even though the primary JAR is in the right directory.

Install mods on a self-hosted server
- Back up the server. Stop it cleanly and copy the world and configuration files before changing the mod set. A mod can alter world data or make an existing save unavailable until the correct version is restored.
- Choose Fabric, Forge, or the loader required by the mod. Install that loader into a dedicated server directory instead of mixing files into an unrelated vanilla server folder.
- Run the loader once. The first run creates the loader’s server files and startup assets. If it stops because of the EULA, do not treat that as a mod failure.
- Open the directory containing the loader JAR and
eula.txt. This is the server installation directory that should containmods. - Create
modsif necessary. Use the exact lowercase folder name and place it directly beside the server files, not inside another nested folder. - Download compatible JARs. Verify Java Edition, the server’s exact Minecraft version, the selected loader, and every listed dependency. Keep the original file extension; do not unpack a mod JAR.
- Copy the files directly into
mods. The expected structure isserver-directory/mods/mod-name.jar. Avoid an extra level such asmods/mod-name/mod-name.jarunless the mod’s documentation explicitly requires it. - Leave client-only files out. Do not copy a client performance, graphics, or interface mod merely because it is present in your personal client folder.
- Accept the EULA when prompted. Forge’s dedicated-server documentation notes that the initial launch shuts down until
eula.txtis edited to accept the EULA. Read the agreement and change the setting only if you accept its terms. - Start the server with the loader’s generated launch command or script from that same directory. Starting a script from a different working directory can make it load a different installation and therefore a different
modsfolder. - Read the startup log. Look for confirmation that the loader initialized, then address any missing dependency, wrong loader, wrong Minecraft version, or client-only-mod message before inviting players.
Keep the client and server in sync
Installing a server mod does not automatically install its client-side portion. Depending on the project, players may need the same mod JAR, a companion client file, or no client file at all. The project’s installation notes determine which arrangement applies.
Keep separate inventories for the two instances:
- Server inventory: server-side mods, shared libraries required by those mods, the selected loader, and the server’s exact Minecraft version.
- Client inventory: client-only mods plus any shared mods the project requires on both sides, using the same supported Minecraft version and loader.
If the server starts but a player cannot join, compare the client and server Minecraft versions, loader versions, and required shared mods. A client can also fail to connect when it has an incompatible extra mod, so matching does not mean copying every file blindly.

The folder principle is the same for both: the loader’s mods directory belongs inside the installation directory of that dedicated server. What changes is the loader installer, generated startup files, and the set of mods and dependencies available for that loader.

Choose based on the mod collection you intend to run, not on the folder name. A correctly placed JAR still fails when it targets the other loader.

Troubleshoot a missing or ignored mods folder
The folder does not exist
Confirm that the loader was installed into the directory you are inspecting and that you ran it at least once. Check the launch script’s working directory and the location of the server JAR. If the loader has not generated the folder, create mods manually in that same directory, then restart.
The server ignores a mod
- Confirm the file ends in
.jar, not.zipor a JAR extension hidden by the operating system. - Make sure the JAR is directly inside
mods, with no extra nested folder. - Verify the mod targets the server’s exact Minecraft version and selected loader.
- Check the log for a dependency requirement; install the compatible dependency in the same
modsdirectory when the project requires it. - Ensure you started the intended server installation rather than another profile or an old launch script.
The server crashes during startup
Stop the server and remove the newest JAR first, because the most recent change is the most useful isolation point. Read the crash report and startup log for the mod ID, missing dependency, incompatible version, or client-only warning. Restore files one at a time after the base server starts, so the conflicting mod is identifiable.
A player cannot join
Compare the player’s Minecraft version and loader with the server. Then compare the required shared mod set and dependency versions. Remove client-only files from the server and add the client-side portion only where the project’s instructions require it. Keep independent client and server folders so a cleanup on one side does not delete the other side’s files.
A custom launcher uses the wrong directory
Open the launcher’s instance settings and locate the Game Directory. Install or copy the client files there, while continuing to use the dedicated server directory for server files. Prism and other instance-based launchers commonly use per-instance directories rather than the global path listed above.
Maintain a modded server safely
Record versions and dependencies
Keep a simple inventory containing the Minecraft version, loader version, each mod filename, and its required libraries. This makes a rollback possible when a project releases an incompatible update or when a new dependency is introduced.

Update in controlled batches
Stop the server, back up the world, update a small group of related files, and start the server while watching the log. Updating every JAR at once makes it difficult to identify the file that caused a crash. Test a copy of the world first when a mod changes terrain, blocks, entities, or world-generation behavior.
Use the loader’s directory consistently
Do not alternate between a desktop shortcut, a panel button, and an old script without checking their target directory. Two installations can each contain a valid mods folder, leading to the impression that mods are being ignored when the server is simply starting from the other folder.
What official support covers
Minecraft Support states: “As modding is not officially supported, Minecraft Support cannot assist with issues arising from mod usage.” In practice, troubleshooting a modded server means using the loader and mod project documentation, reading the server log, and reproducing the problem with incompatible or newly added files removed. Keep an unmodified backup so you can distinguish a loader or server problem from a mod problem.
