Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →The “Outgoing reliable buffer overflow” message in ARK: Survival Evolved usually appears during a cross-server character transfer, often after you choose a spawn point on the destination server. The most useful first test is to transfer a stripped-down survivor: place ordinary inventory, large stacks, skins, blueprints and other nonessential items in a container, then travel with fewer learned engrams. If that works, the survivor’s saved state was probably too large or inconsistent for the transfer. If it does not, the cluster owner needs to check identical game builds, mod lists and versions, plus the affected survivor’s transfer profile.
Godlike.Host offers hosted ARK: Survival Evolved servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Community reports support that diagnosis, but no developer-published byte limit or universal profile-size threshold establishes exactly when the error occurs. Treat each fix below as a controlled test rather than a guaranteed cure.

What the error means
ARK reports this as a Network Failure Message. In the commonly reported scenario, you upload or otherwise initiate a clustered-server transfer, connect to the destination, select a spawn point and are then disconnected with “Outgoing reliable buffer overflow.” A 2017 Steam discussion and an official-community report describe that same sequence.
In practical terms, the destination is receiving a character-state payload that may be too large, malformed or incompatible with the destination’s current game and mod state. Community accounts repeatedly point to the contents of that state: learned engrams, mod-added engrams, carried items, skins, blueprints and other mod data. That is a useful working model, not a confirmed protocol specification. The available reports do not establish a byte limit, packet limit or profile-size cutoff.

Why a transfer exposes the problem
A survivor can continue working normally on one map while failing when the game serializes that survivor for travel. The destination has to reconstruct the character, inventory and related data using its own build and loaded mods. A mismatch or unusually large payload can therefore fail at spawn even when your internet connection appears normal.
The timing helps narrow the cause. An error only after destination spawn points toward transfer data. An error while joining every time, including without a transfer, raises the priority of profile corruption or a cluster-wide mod/build problem. An error that began after a mod update is especially valuable evidence for an administrator.

Do these checks before changing anything
- Write down the source map, destination map, approximate time, whether the disconnect occurred before or after selecting a spawn point, and whether other survivors can transfer.
- Do not delete the survivor profile or wipe the cluster as a first response. Those actions can destroy progression and have little diagnostic value.
- If the survivor is carrying irreplaceable items, move them to a secure container, base storage or another permitted holding location before testing. Follow the cluster’s rules for uploads and item transfers.
- Tell the administrator which mods were recently added, removed or updated. Include mods that are not actively used on one map; cluster parity still matters.
Player fix sequence
Work through these steps in order. After each change, perform one controlled transfer and record the result. That makes it possible to identify the contributing data instead of changing several variables at once.
1. Test a clean transfer
- On the source server, place ordinary inventory in a container or other safe storage.
- Remove large stacks, skins, blueprints and items added or altered by mods. If an item is not needed for the test, leave it behind.
- Avoid traveling with a bag containing many individually tracked objects. Community reports specifically describe carried-item count and per-item data as possible contributors.
- Upload or travel with the minimally equipped survivor and attempt to spawn on the destination.
A successful clean transfer is strong diagnostic evidence: the destination can accept the survivor when less state is included. Reintroduce stored items in small groups on later trips if the server rules permit. If the same error returns after one category is restored, tell the administrator exactly which category was added.

2. Reduce the learned-engrams payload
Large engram catalogs, particularly those supplied by mods, are repeatedly mentioned in community reports. A survivor who has learned nearly every available engram can carry substantially more serialized state than a fresh or specialized character.
For a low-risk test, avoid learning additional engrams and transfer with the reduced inventory from step one. A mindwipe can provide a stronger diagnostic: it resets learned engrams so you can test the survivor with a smaller learned set. It is not a harmless network setting. A mindwipe changes progression and may affect your playstyle, server rules and ability to use learned recipes until you relearn them. Use it only when you accept that gameplay consequence, and do not present it as a guaranteed cure.

If a mindwipe makes the transfer work, note how many and which mod engrams you relearn before the problem returns. That information gives the administrator a reproducible boundary even though no official numerical limit is published.
3. Verify mod parity with the cluster owner
Every server in a cluster should run the same mod set and compatible versions. Ask the administrator to compare the complete lists, not just the mods visible in the launcher or the ones you actively use on a particular map. A dated Steam discussion recommends matching mods across all clustered servers, including mods that appear unused on one map.

Do not assume that reinstalling one mod locally fixes a server-side mismatch. The administrator may need to update, roll back or remove a mod consistently on every map, then restart the affected servers in the correct order. Record the exact mod versions and the game build when retesting.
4. Try the bed fast-travel reset after joining
A 2024 community report describes a workaround in which the player uses a bed fast-travel reset after logging in or arriving on a map. The report associates this with inventory-size or mod-state glitches. Results are anecdotal and mixed, so treat it as a reversible workaround rather than proof that the underlying transfer is fixed.

Only use a bed that you are authorized to use and that will not strand your survivor or expose items to other players. If the reset lets you remain connected, repeat a normal transfer later with a clean inventory to see whether the improvement persists.
5. Avoid huge modded batch operations while diagnosing
The same 2024 report describes the error while processing a very large stack in a modded inventory. Until the cause is isolated, keep stack sizes and conversion batches moderate. Split a large operation into several smaller ones, reconnect and test between batches, and note which modded inventory or conversion action was running.

This precaution is particularly useful when the error occurs without a server transfer. It does not prove that stack size is the root cause; it simply removes a reported trigger while you collect evidence.
How to interpret the result
| Observed result | Most useful next action | What the result tells you |
|---|---|---|
| Transfer succeeds with empty storage and fewer engrams | Restore items or engrams in small groups and report the first failing group | The survivor payload is a plausible contributor |
| Transfer fails only after a particular modded item, skin or blueprint is restored | Give the administrator the item class, mod name and reproduction steps | A specific mod or serialized object may be involved |
| Transfer fails on every map with the same survivor | Ask for a profile and transfer-state inspection | The issue may be survivor-specific rather than a general network outage |
| All survivors fail after a mod or build change | Have the administrator compare cluster versions and restart consistently | A cluster-wide compatibility problem becomes more likely |
| Error appears during a very large modded inventory operation | Split the operation into smaller batches and identify the responsible mod | Inventory or conversion logic may be producing an oversized or inconsistent state |
Administrator checklist
If the clean-transfer test does not solve the problem, the cluster owner needs to investigate server state. Provide the time, maps, survivor name or identifier, inventory conditions and exact point of failure. That is more actionable than reporting only that “the network is bad.”

- Verify that every cluster server is on the same game build or on versions known to interoperate.
- Compare the complete mod list and compatible versions on every server, including mods not actively used on one map.
- Review recent additions, removals and updates, especially mods that add large engram catalogs, blueprints, skins or custom inventory behavior.
- Restart or update servers consistently after changes so one map is not loading an older state.
Classify the failure
- Ask whether it occurs only while transferring, only after destination spawn, or on every login.
- Test another survivor and, if possible, another map pair. A single affected survivor suggests profile data; every survivor suggests cluster configuration.
- Repeat with an empty inventory and reduced learned engrams. Keep the test survivor and destination constant so the comparison is meaningful.
Inspect the affected survivor
Review the survivor’s profile and transfer state using the administrative tools available for that cluster. Look for unusual inventory entries, mod references or state left by a recently changed mod. Preserve a backup before making edits. Profile edits or deletion are potentially destructive and should be the last resort, with the owner explaining what progression or items could be lost.
If the owner cannot inspect the cluster directly, an administrator or managed ARK cluster-hosting service may be able to review logs, synchronize builds and mods, and restore a backup. Confirm the provider’s scope, backup policy and any fees before authorizing changes; hosting does not itself guarantee that this error will disappear.

What is unlikely to be a guaranteed fix
Do not promise that reinstalling ARK, buying more RAM, changing internet providers or purchasing a faster router will resolve this particular message. The 2024 discussion records a reinstall that did not solve the problem and includes conflicting community opinions about bandwidth and RAM. Those anecdotes do not establish a universal hardware or bandwidth requirement.
A stable connection is still useful for testing, but the reported trigger is the survivor state being serialized during transfer. No authoritative source in the available evidence supplies a universal profile-size threshold, frequency statistic or guaranteed remedy. Avoid presenting a speculative number as an official limit.
Choosing the least destructive remedy
| Remedy | Who performs it | Player risk | Reversibility | Diagnostic value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Move inventory to storage and transfer clean | Player | Low, provided storage is secure | High | High; isolates carried-state data |
| Reduce learned engrams without a mindwipe | Player | Low | High | Moderate |
| Use a mindwipe for testing | Player | Progression changes | Limited; relearning is required | High for engram-related diagnosis |
| Match mod lists and versions | Administrator | Usually low, but updates can affect gameplay | High if backups and version records exist | High for cluster-wide failures |
| Bed fast-travel reset | Player | Low but location-dependent | High | Low to moderate; anecdotal workaround |
| Edit or delete survivor data | Administrator | Potential loss of progression or items | Low without a backup | Variable |
When to stop testing and escalate
Escalate to the cluster owner when a clean survivor still fails, when multiple survivors fail, when the error began immediately after a mod or build change, or when the only apparent remedy would delete or rewrite profile data. Include your controlled-test notes:
- Source and destination maps.
- Whether the disconnect happened before or after choosing a spawn point.
- Inventory state: empty, ordinary items, large stacks, skins, blueprints or modded objects.
- Whether learned engrams were reduced or reset.
- Game build and complete mod list, including recent version changes.
- Whether a bed reset or smaller batch operation changed the behavior.
This record lets an administrator compare your case with server logs and recent configuration changes instead of repeatedly asking you to reinstall the game or replace network hardware.
