Which key does what
Most Chromebook keyboards have a Backspace key but no dedicated Delete key in the position people expect from a Windows keyboard. Backspace removes the character before the cursor. Forward delete, which removes the character after the cursor, is reached through a modifier combination. The table below covers the text-editing actions that Google’s shortcut list documents for a standard US keyboard.

If you were looking for a physical key labelled Delete, the practical answer is that forward delete is a key combination rather than a separate key on the standard layout.

Google’s list is the reference for the US layout, but the shortcuts shown on your device are the ones that apply to your keyboard settings. To check them:

- Select the time in the bottom-right corner (the status area).
- Select the Settings gear icon.
- In the left menu, choose Device, then Keyboard and inputs.
- Select View keyboard shortcuts.
Expected result: a shortcut reference window opens listing the commands available on that device. If you prefer a keyboard route, Google documents Ctrl + Search + S as a way to open the list of all keyboard shortcuts. Google’s guide also notes that Search and Launcher can both work for some shortcuts, and that the Windows key on an attached Windows keyboard can act as Search on a Chromebook.
Deleting a file instead of text
If you meant removing a file, forward delete will not help: it only edits text. Files are removed through the Files app, and the steps are different.

- Open the Files app.
- Select the file or folder you want to remove.
- Select the Trash control.
Google states that most deleted files go to Trash and are permanently deleted after 30 days. Items you move to Trash can therefore be restored until that retention period ends. The 30-day statement comes from Google’s Chromebook Help page on opening, saving, and deleting files, which does not give a publication date.

Keyboards that differ from the standard layout
Google’s keyboard settings cover both the built-in keyboard and external keyboards, and Backspace is among the keys that can be remapped. Remapping is the most direct fix if your keyboard lacks an easy forward-delete combination for your workflow, because you can assign a different key to the function. Where a key sits on a third-party keyboard depends on that model, and Google’s documentation does not describe a universal physical Delete key for every Chromebook keyboard.
