DVB-T and its successor, DVB-T2, are used across much of Europe, Africa, the Middle East and parts of Asia-Pacific. DVB Project’s November 2023 deployment snapshot says one or both standards had been implemented or adopted in 147 countries. That is a combined figure—not a count of countries using DVB-T alone—and adoption does not necessarily mean services are currently on air.
What the global numbers actually show
DVB Project reports that DVB-T and/or DVB-T2 had been implemented or adopted in 147 countries worldwide, based on the DVB/EBU/BNE DTT Deployment Database dated November 2023. The count includes both generations and about ten countries with pay-DTT only; it should not be presented as “147 countries use DVB-T.” DVB Project’s DTT deployment data also reports that digital terrestrial television (DTT) services were on air in 82% of countries, representing 91.3% of the world’s population. Those latter figures describe DTT in general, not DVB-T specifically.

The figures answer different questions:
- Adopted or implemented: A country has selected a standard or taken steps to put it into use. This alone does not establish that viewers can receive services everywhere—or that services are on air.
- Services on air: DTT broadcasts are operating. DVB’s 82% and 91.3% figures apply to DTT generally, not only DVB-based networks.
- Standard in use: A country may use DVB-T, DVB-T2, both during a transition, or a different terrestrial standard.
DVB’s detailed country database tracks standard choices, network status and service information, but access is restricted to DVB members. It is maintained with the EBU and Broadcast Networks Europe. DVB Project’s public overview gives the aggregate figures; it does not provide a fully current public country-by-country inventory.

DVB terrestrial broadcasting is widespread, especially in Europe, Africa and the Middle East, as well as parts of Asia-Pacific. The regional picture is not universal: different parts of the world have established different broadcast standards.

| Region or market | High-level terrestrial TV pattern |
|---|---|
| Europe, Africa and the Middle East | DVB-T and/or DVB-T2 are widespread. In 2006, participating countries in these regions agreed on an all-digital frequency plan based exclusively on DVB-T; that historical plan helps explain the standard’s reach, but is not a current country list. |
| North America | ATSC is the dominant terrestrial system in DVB’s regional summary. |
| South America | ISDB-T is the dominant terrestrial system in DVB’s regional summary. |
| China and Japan | Each uses a domestically developed terrestrial system, according to DVB’s summary. |
These are broad regional patterns, not guarantees about every network or locality. For the current standard in a particular country, check its regulator or public broadcaster. DVB Project’s deployment overview provides the regional summary; its account of the 2006 frequency plan is historical background, not a current inventory.
DVB-T and DVB-T2 are different generations
DVB-T is the original standard; DVB-T2 is its second-generation successor. They are related but distinct standards, so a receiver that supports DVB-T does not necessarily support DVB-T2. DVB describes DVB-T2 as offering significant benefits over DVB-T and publishes implementation guidance for receiver and tuner design. DVB’s DVB-T2 implementation guidance covers the implementation chain.

Countries may list DVB-T only, DVB-T2 only, or both—for example, where services or networks are changing over. The ITU handbook distinguishes these categories, but its breakdown reflects the state in September 2016, not the present-day status. It counted 150 countries in total: 66 using DVB-T only, 30 using DVB-T2 only, and 54 using both or introducing both. ITU’s digital terrestrial television handbook is useful for understanding the categories, not as a current count.
An earlier DVB Project figure also illustrates why dates and definitions matter: its magazine reported 35 DVB-T countries, 83 DVB-T2 countries and 25 using both, with data updated through the end of 2019. Adoption or implementation counts could include pay-TV-only cases. DVB Scene 56 is a dated snapshot, not a replacement for a current country check.

Is DVB-T used in the USA?
DVB is not the dominant terrestrial television system in North America; DVB Project’s regional summary identifies ATSC as dominant there. That does not make the combined 147-country DVB-T/DVB-T2 figure a precise country-by-country inventory, nor does the regional summary establish every local exception. For a specific U.S. service or receiver, verify the broadcast standard with the relevant broadcaster or regulator rather than assuming a DVB tuner will work.
How to check whether a DVB receiver will work where you live
Before choosing a television, USB tuner or set-top box, confirm the local broadcast system and the details of the services you intend to receive. A worldwide adoption count cannot establish compatibility for a particular device or location.

- Check the country’s current standard. Confirm whether local terrestrial broadcasts use DVB-T, DVB-T2 or another system, using the regulator or broadcaster’s current information. National deployment can change, and an older international listing may not reflect the present state.
- Match the tuner generation. Check the receiver’s specifications for the exact standard. DVB-T support alone does not guarantee DVB-T2 reception.
- Check service requirements. Confirm any tuner, codec or conditional-access requirements specified by the local service. Also find out whether the service is free-to-air or pay-DTT; the global adoption count includes some pay-DTT-only countries.
- Match the antenna and installation to the location. Verify that the antenna suits the local frequency band and reception conditions, and consider whether indoor or outdoor placement is appropriate for local coverage.
- Confirm services are actually on air. A standard may have been selected or a network introduced without establishing that a service is available at your address. Check local coverage and service information.
The ITU handbook describes different reception modes and network arrangements, but the needed antenna and installation depend on local frequencies, coverage and conditions; a global standard label cannot determine those details for an individual address. ITU’s handbook provides background on those arrangements.

How current are the country counts?
The best public global aggregate cited here is dated November 2023, not 2026. The more detailed ITU breakdown describes September 2016, while the separate DVB generation counts reflect data through the end of 2019. DVB says its detailed database is regularly updated, but it is member-access. These sources establish DVB-T and DVB-T2’s broad reach; they do not establish a definitive, current public count for each country. For a named country, consult its regulator or public broadcaster for the latest standard and service status.
