For most current Xbox app installations, start with C:XboxGames. If you chose another drive, look for the equivalent root, such as D:XboxGames or E:XboxGames. The exact folder depends on the Xbox app setting, the drive selected during installation, and which storefront installed the game.
The usual Xbox game folder
The commonly reported default for games installed by the Xbox app on Windows 11 is:

C:XboxGames
Games normally appear in subfolders beneath that root. If you selected another drive, use the same folder name there:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesD:XboxGamesE:XboxGames
This is a practical starting point, not an immutable Windows rule. The drive may have been changed previously, and the Xbox app’s preference can differ from Windows 11’s general default location for new apps. Microsoft community guidance identifies C:XboxGames as the typical default and describes choosing another drive in the Xbox app: Microsoft Community.

Find one game’s exact installation location
Use the Xbox app before searching protected Windows folders. Labels vary by app release and title, but the route is generally:
- Open the Xbox app for Windows.
- Open My Library or the installed-games list.
- Select the game.
- Open Manage, Manage installation, or the game’s options menu.
- Look for Files, Installation, Browse, Change drive, or a similar location control.
Microsoft introduced installation controls that can expose local files and move supported games, but availability depends on the title and its package: Xbox Wire.
If no location control appears, try these limited fallbacks:
- Right-click a game shortcut and choose Open file location, if Windows offers it.
- Search each internal drive for the game’s title or publisher folder.
- Check Xbox app > profile picture > Settings > General > Game install options.
Do not change permissions on C:Program FilesWindowsApps simply to locate a game.
Change where future Xbox games are installed
Set the location in the Xbox app
- Open the Xbox app.
- Select your profile picture or account menu.
- Choose Settings, then General.
- Find Game install options.
- Select the preferred drive or folder. You can also enable Ask me for install options on every install, when available.
Microsoft can change menu wording between releases, so look for the phrase Game install options rather than relying on an identical screen layout. The setting and alternate-drive behavior are described in Microsoft Community guidance.
Check Windows 11’s storage preference
- Open Settings.
- Go to System > Storage > Advanced storage settings > Where new content is saved.
- Review the drive selected for New apps will save to.
This Windows setting can influence Microsoft Store installation services, but it does not always override the Xbox app’s own game-install preference. Treat it as a secondary check.
Install to a second internal drive
An internal SSD with a stable drive letter is generally the least troublesome destination. To test a new drive:

- Confirm that the drive appears in File Explorer and has enough free space.
- In the Xbox app’s installation dialog, select the drive itself.
- Allow the app to use or create a simple root such as
D:XboxGames. - Install a small title first and verify that it launches before moving a large library.
If the app rejects a target, a Microsoft Community workaround is to create an XboxGames folder directly at the root of the drive rather than selecting a deeply nested folder: Microsoft Community. This is practical community advice, not a guarantee for every system.
Move an installed game without downloading it again
For a title that supports Xbox installation management:
- Open My Library in the Xbox app.
- Open the game’s Manage screen.
- Choose Files or the installation-management section.
- Select Change drive or Move.
- Choose the destination and let the Xbox app complete the transfer.
Some older or differently packaged games do not provide these controls. Do not drag the folder manually in File Explorer: registration data, manifests, licensing information, updates, or Gaming Services may still point to the old path. The Xbox Wire announcement also limits these advanced controls to supported games: Xbox Wire.
Why you see WindowsApps
C:Program FilesWindowsApps is a protected Windows package directory. Microsoft Store components, Gaming Services, and some package-managed files may appear there, but it is not the normal library root a user should browse for ordinary Xbox game management. Microsoft Q&A material documents Gaming Services under this protected path: Microsoft Q&A.
Windows may deny access even to administrators. Taking ownership, renaming folders, or deleting packages there can damage Store-managed applications and is not a fix for a missing game. Use the Xbox app’s management controls instead.
Fix an invalid folder or drive error
If Xbox says, “You can’t set your default install location to that folder,” work through this sequence:
- Select the drive rather than an arbitrary nested directory.
- Use a simple root such as
D:XboxGames. - Avoid
C:Program Files,C:Program FilesWindowsApps, another launcher’s library folder, cloud-synced folders, and drives that disconnect. - Check the drive letter, connection, available space, and whether encryption or other restrictions block app installations.
- Restart the Xbox app and Windows.
- Update Windows, Microsoft Store, Xbox, and Gaming Services.
- Record the current location before using Windows app Repair or Reset options.
If Gaming Services itself is failing, use Microsoft’s official Gaming Services Repair Tool where it is offered rather than deleting WindowsApps files. A separate Microsoft Q&A troubleshooting example recommends the C:XboxGames root and the Xbox app’s game-install options for a rejected location: Microsoft Q&A.

When the expected folder is empty
- The game is on another drive or the default location changed after a reset or drive replacement.
- The title was installed through Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, or another launcher.
- The drive is disconnected, its letter changed, or Windows no longer recognizes it as a valid installation location.
- Only the launcher or Gaming Services component is installed; the game download is incomplete.
- The Xbox app has lost track of an existing installation.
- The title uses a protected package-managed installation.
Check the Xbox app’s current install setting, inspect each drive for an XboxGames folder, search Windows for the title, and verify the account in Microsoft Store > Library. Store availability can also depend on account authorization, compatibility, region, or update state: Microsoft Support. Do not delete a visible folder until the app’s repair or rediscovery options have been considered.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →External drives: useful, but less predictable
Some Xbox app games can run from an external drive, especially an external SSD, but compatibility is title- and system-dependent. Disconnects, changed drive letters, USB hubs, sleep behavior, or insufficient performance can make a game disappear or fail to launch. Xbox has specifically warned that external-drive installations may encounter launch issues: Xbox Wire.
An internal SSD is the best default for frequently played games. An internal hard drive provides capacity at the cost of loading and update speed. An external SSD suits laptops with limited storage; an external hard drive is a slower secondary option.
Xbox app, Steam, and other storefronts use different folders
The Xbox PC app can act as a hub for Xbox, Game Pass, and games from other PC storefronts. A game visible in its library is therefore not proof that Xbox installed it. Microsoft describes this hub approach here: Microsoft Windows.
Keep launchers on the same physical drive if convenient, but use separate managed roots, for example:

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
D:XboxGamesD:SteamLibrary
Do not point Xbox at a Steam library or assume a Steam, Epic, or Battle.net installation will be inside XboxGames.
Back up or modify Xbox game files
Supported titles may expose accessible local files for troubleshooting or modding, but copying a folder is not necessarily a portable backup. Licensing, manifests, Gaming Services, updates, and package metadata may still be required before the game works again. The safest recovery path is usually the Xbox app’s move, repair, or reinstall function. Never promise that pasting a copied folder onto another Windows installation will make the app recognize it automatically.
Quick Recap
Quick checklist
- Check
C:XboxGamesfirst. - Check the
XboxGamesroot on every other installed drive. - Use the game’s Manage or Files controls for its exact path.
- Set future locations under Xbox > Settings > General > Game install options.
- Use a simple root such as
D:XboxGameswhen a drive is rejected. - Do not modify
C:Program FilesWindowsApps. - Confirm which storefront actually installed the game.
