Recommended Free Tools
Galaxy AI is not a single chatbot. On US Galaxy phones, it is a set of tools built into Samsung Notes, Samsung Keyboard, Samsung Internet, Samsung Phone, Voice Recorder, Gallery, the lock screen and Google-powered features such as Circle to Search. The most practical starting set is Note Assist, Transcript Assist, Writing Assist, Circle to Search and Now Brief.
Availability depends on your exact model, carrier, country, One UI version and the individual feature. Samsung’s US support documentation lists support across newer S and Z models, selected A-series phones, tablets and some older devices, but not every supported phone receives the same tools. Check your phone before assuming a feature is included.
Check compatibility and finish setup first
Open Settings > Galaxy AI. On some models the menu is Settings > Advanced features > Intelligent features. If a tool is missing there or from its required app, your model or software may not support it.
Samsung says many features require One UI 6.1 or later, while newer tools are associated with One UI 8. Availability lists are not identical, so use the phone’s own menus as the final check. See Samsung’s current US feature and compatibility guidance at Samsung support and Samsung’s broader compatibility list.

Samsung currently says basic Galaxy AI features are free, while enhanced Samsung AI and third-party AI features can have different terms or fees. Do not assume every feature will always be free; see Samsung’s terms and feature guidance.
The five productivity features to try first
| Daily task | Best feature | Where it lives |
|---|---|---|
| Clean up rough notes | Note Assist | Samsung Notes |
| Summarize a meeting or lecture | Transcript Assist | Voice Recorder, Samsung Notes or supported files |
| Improve an email or text | Writing Assist | Samsung Keyboard |
| Review the day | Now Brief | Galaxy AI, widget, lock screen or Apps Edge |
| Research what is on screen | Circle to Search | Navigation bar |
Use Note Assist for notes, PDFs and brainstorming
Best for: meeting notes, lectures, handwritten S Pen pages, imported PDFs and rough idea lists. Samsung says Note Assist can summarize, translate and format writing entered with the keyboard or S Pen, and can work with voice recordings or imported PDFs in Samsung Notes.
- Open Samsung Notes and create or open a note.
- Add typed text, handwriting, an imported PDF or a recording.
- Select the relevant text or open the note’s AI controls.
- Choose Summarize, Format, Translate, or Correct spelling and grammar.
- Compare the result with the original, then edit or keep the AI version as a draft.
Useful prompts in practice include turning free-form notes into headings and bullets, translating a handwritten page, or converting an idea list into an outline. Keep the original note: summaries can omit names, numbers, deadlines and qualifications, so do not use them as the sole record for medical, legal, financial, school or work decisions.
Turn recordings into searchable summaries with Transcript Assist
Best for: meetings, interviews, lectures and voice memos. Samsung’s current US guidance says Transcript Assist uses the pre-installed Samsung Voice Recorder and supported files from Samsung Phone, Samsung Notes or Samsung Interpreter. Files must be under three hours for processing; transcription and summarization require network access and a Samsung account, and accuracy is not guaranteed. Details are documented at Samsung Galaxy AI.

- Open Voice Recorder and record, or select an existing recording.
- Tap Transcribe, then the Galaxy AI icon.
- Choose Summarize or Translate.
- Use grouping by subject or timeline when offered.
- Review the transcript, search it by keyword if available, and check important passages against the audio.
If transcription is missing or fails
- No Transcribe button can mean an unsupported model, source app, language or software version.
- Check the internet connection, Samsung account, file length and selected language.
- Noise, overlapping speakers, accents and specialist vocabulary reduce accuracy.
- Call recording support varies by country, carrier and model. Recording-consent laws also vary by state; obtain consent where required.
Samsung’s One UI 8 walkthrough shows the same workflow at Samsung Newsroom.
Improve messages and email with Writing Assist
Writing Assist works through the Samsung Keyboard and is most useful for correcting, translating or changing the tone of text you have already drafted. Samsung lists Chat Translation, Spelling and Grammar, Writing Style and Composer.
- Open Messages, Samsung Notes or another app using the Samsung Keyboard.
- Type or paste your draft.
- Tap the Galaxy AI icon above the keyboard.
- Choose Spelling and Grammar, Writing Style, Composer or Chat Translation.
- Review the result, then tap Replace or Copy.
Writing Assist generally needs a network connection and Samsung account login, can require a minimum text length and varies by language. If you use Gboard, the Galaxy AI keyboard controls may not appear. Give it a narrow instruction and check every factual claim before sending; generated wording can change your meaning or sound more generic than intended. Samsung documents the current controls at this One UI 8 guide.
Research faster with Circle to Search
Circle to Search lets you identify an object, copy text from an image, translate visible words or find related results without leaving the current app. It requires internet access and is available on select devices running Android 14 with One UI 6.1 or later. Secure banking and streaming apps may block screen capture.

Enable and use it
- Go to Settings > Display > Navigation bar and enable Circle to Search.
- Open the image, video, web page or Camera view you want to inspect.
- Touch and hold the Home icon on the navigation bar.
- Circle the subject or tap it directly.
- Swipe up through results. For detected text, choose Copy or Translate.
- On supported software, ask an AI Mode follow-up question, but verify the linked source.
If it says the feature is unavailable, open Settings > Apps > Choose default apps > Digital assistant app and enable Analyze on-screen images. Then update the phone and confirm compatibility. See Samsung’s Circle to Search troubleshooting guide.
Summarize web pages with Browsing Assist
In Samsung Internet, Browsing Assist can summarize long pages and translate content. Open a page, open the browser’s AI or Galaxy AI controls, and choose summarization or translation when offered. Button placement and labels vary by One UI and Samsung Internet version. Treat the result as triage: compare it with the original for news, contracts, instructions, research and technical material.
Configure Now Brief as a daily dashboard
Now Brief can combine selected schedules, reminders, travel information, health and wellness data, music and podcasts, SmartThings activity, memories and news headlines. The available categories depend on device, language, region, apps and network connection.
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI > Now Brief.
- Tap Content to include and select only the categories you want.
- Optionally enable Show Now Brief while phone is locked.
- Use the Now Brief widget, lock-screen card or Apps Edge Panel on supported models.
- Tap the Settings icon to adjust the briefing.
More sources make the briefing more useful but expose more personal context. Samsung says recalled data can involve notifications, messages, Gmail and Samsung Wallet when the relevant permissions and notifications are enabled. Start with calendar and reminders, then add sources selectively. See Samsung’s Galaxy AI overview.

Translate conversations and calls
Interpreter for in-person conversations
- Swipe down with two fingers to open Quick Settings.
- Tap Interpreter and select both languages.
- Tap the microphone for the language being spoken.
- Speak and review the translated text or audio.
English and Spanish are preinstalled in Interpreter; other languages may require a free download.
Live Translate in calls
- Open Settings > Galaxy AI > Call Assist > Live Translate and enable it.
- Select or download the required languages.
- Make a call in the native Samsung Phone app.
- Tap Call Assist > Live Translate during the call.
- Stop translation from the call controls when finished.
Standard Live Translate calls depend on the Samsung Phone app, supported devices, languages and regional or carrier availability. Supported third-party apps may differ. Slang, names, technical terms and overlapping speech can produce errors; do not use it as a certified interpreter for medical, legal, emergency or other high-stakes conversations. See Samsung’s One UI 8 instructions.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Gemini on newer Galaxy phones: a separate Google feature
Google announced a beta capability for select devices, including the Galaxy S26 series in the US and Korea, that lets you long-press the Side button and ask Gemini to perform selected multi-step tasks such as arranging a ride, reordering food or building a grocery cart. It works with select apps, varies by market and requires supervision. This is Google Gemini integrated into Galaxy phones, not Samsung’s basic Galaxy AI feature set. See Google’s announcement.
- Open Settings > Advanced features > Side button.
- Tap Long press > Digital assistant.
- Select Google under the recommended AI assistant.
- Long-press the Side button and review every proposed action before confirming.
Do not allow an agentic beta workflow to make unsupervised purchases, send messages or change bookings.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.

Understand cloud processing and privacy controls
Samsung says some translations and Gallery Edit Suggestions are handled on-device, while many formatting, summarization, correction and image-editing functions use cloud processing or require a network connection. To restrict Galaxy AI to local processing, open Settings > Galaxy AI and enable Process data only on device. Limiting processing can reduce which features work or how they function. Account permissions for Samsung, Google, Gmail, notifications and Personal Data Intelligence can also affect results. Samsung’s explanation is at Samsung support.
Feature trade-offs and alternatives
| Feature | Main advantage | Main weakness |
|---|---|---|
| Note Assist | Fast formatting and summaries | Can omit important details |
| Transcript Assist | Searchable recordings | Accuracy, account, network, app and length limits |
| Writing Assist | Quick tone and grammar changes | May sound generic or alter meaning |
| Now Brief | Convenient daily overview | Needs access to personal data and selected apps |
| Circle to Search | Fast visual search and extraction | Internet required; blocked in some secure apps |
| Browsing Assist | Quick long-page triage | Not a substitute for the source |
| Live Translate | Basic multilingual communication | Translation errors can matter |
| Gemini agent | Reduces repetitive multi-step work | Beta-style limits and supervision required |
| AI Select | Extracts screen content | Model-dependent availability |
| Audio Eraser | Reduces common background noise | Results vary and can alter audio |
Google Gemini may suit people already invested in Google apps. Google Keep, Microsoft OneNote, Google Recorder or another transcription service may fit better if Samsung’s first-party apps are not your workflow. Chrome or Google Lens provide alternatives for web and visual research. Manual proofreading or human transcription remains preferable for confidential or high-stakes material.
When an upgrade actually helps
Do not upgrade solely for Note Assist, Writing Assist, Transcript Assist or Circle to Search until you check your current model. An upgrade is more defensible when your phone lacks the specific tool, cannot receive the required One UI update, or you want newer Gemini automation, a larger multitasking display or S Pen workflows.
- Galaxy S26 and S26+: newest software and current Samsung and Google AI integrations.
- Galaxy S26 Ultra: larger display, S Pen and 256GB, 512GB and 1TB configurations; unnecessary for basic AI writing and summaries.
- Galaxy S25 series: consider when discounted or certified renewed; check the live product page for current pricing.
- Galaxy Z Fold phones: useful for document reading, Notes and multitasking, but carry a hardware premium.
- Galaxy Buds: optional audio convenience for Interpreter, not a requirement.
- Samsung Certified Re-Newed: lower-cost path to a supported previous-generation flagship.
- Samsung trade-in: credit varies by device, condition, carrier and promotion; calculate it live.
- Samsung Care+: optional protection whose coverage and price should be checked at purchase.
Missing-feature troubleshooting checklist
- Install the latest One UI and app updates.
- Confirm the exact phone model, carrier and region.
- Sign in to Samsung and, where relevant, Google.
- Use the required app: Samsung Keyboard, Samsung Phone, Samsung Notes, Samsung Internet or Voice Recorder.
- Check internet access, language downloads and account permissions.
- Confirm that the app does not block screen capture.
- Look under Settings > Galaxy AI and Settings > Advanced features > Intelligent features.
- Restart the phone after changing AI settings.
Start with two or three tools rather than enabling everything. For most owners, Note Assist, Writing Assist, Circle to Search and Transcript Assist deliver the clearest daily productivity gains, while Now Brief is worth adding if its data-sharing trade-off suits you.
