In the United States, use the FAA-referenced B4UFLY service to check airspace and restrictions for your planned drone flight. A map check is not permission to fly: if the location is in controlled airspace that requires authorization, get approval before takeoff.
Which drone map should you use?
Start with the FAA’s Where Can I Fly page, which points recreational flyers to B4UFLY for checking where they can and cannot fly. The FAA also identifies its UAS Facility Map as a resource for checking a location. Review the map information for the exact place you intend to launch and operate.

The FAA says anyone flying a drone is responsible for following its guidelines and regulations. The Where Can I Fly page was last updated March 8, 2024; check current information for your flight because restrictions, including temporary ones, can change.

How to check a planned flight location
- Open the FAA-referenced B4UFLY service. Enter or inspect the specific location where you plan to fly.
- Review the airspace and restrictions shown. Do not treat a broad map view or an apparently clear area as a complete permission check.
- Follow any authorization instructions before flying. If the flight is in controlled airspace requiring authorization, approval must be obtained in advance.
- Check again close to flight time. Confirm current restrictions for the exact place and time rather than relying on an earlier map check.
When do you need airspace authorization?
Requirements depend on the airspace and the type of operation. FAA guidance says recreational flyers need prior authorization in Class B, C, or D airspace, designated airport-surface Class E airspace, and Class G airspace above 400 feet. This list is not a substitute for checking the full rules and current restrictions that apply to a particular flight.

For controlled airspace near airports, authorization is required before flight. Eligible Part 107 remote pilots and recreational flyers may use a LAANC service supplier for certain authorizations below posted UAS Facility Map grid altitudes. Other situations may require a request through FAADroneZone. Use the route applicable to your location and operation; a map display by itself does not grant authorization.
What this map guidance covers
This guidance is for U.S. flights under FAA rules. The title does not specify a country or a flight location, so it cannot establish whether any particular flight is allowed. For a flight outside the United States, consult the aviation authority responsible for that country; for a specific U.S. flight, check the current official information for its exact location and time.
