When Will the Technological Singularity Happen? Kurzweil Predicts 2045

Kurzweil’s best-known singularity forecast is 2045. AI researcher surveys estimate related but distinct milestones, not a consensus date for the singularity.

Ray Kurzweil predicts the technological singularity will happen in 2045. That is one futurist’s forecast, not a date chosen by scientists as a group or established by scientific consensus. Surveys of AI researchers point to related milestones around the same period, but they ask different questions.

What year do scientists predict the technological singularity will happen?

There is no single scientific forecast for the year of the singularity. The best-known date is 2045, set by inventor and author Ray Kurzweil. In his official book Q&A, he calls the singularity a profound transformation in human capability associated with technological progress moving too quickly for unenhanced human intelligence to follow.

Kurzweil’s idea is more specific than AI simply becoming highly capable: it involves nonbiological intelligence that can improve its own design and drive further rapid advances. In a 2025 lecture, he reiterated the 2045 forecast, saying that people would have fully merged with AI and that intelligence would expand a millionfold. These are Kurzweil’s predictions, not observed capabilities or validated projections. MIT News reported on the lecture.

How do other forecasts compare with 2045?

AI surveys offer useful context, but their forecasted events are not interchangeable with Kurzweil’s self-improving singularity. One asks when machines might outperform people at tasks; another asks when occupations could be automated. Neither directly measures when technology will outrun human comprehension.

Forecast What was estimated Who and when How to read it
2045 A singularity: a profound transformation involving nonbiological intelligence and accelerating progress Ray Kurzweil; stated in his official book Q&A and reiterated in 2025 A named futurist’s target year, not a scientific consensus date
50% chance around 2040–2050; 90% by 2075 High-level machine intelligence Median estimates from four expert groups surveyed in 2012/2013; reported by Müller and Bostrom in 2016 A historical survey estimate; high-level machine intelligence is not the same event as Kurzweil’s singularity. 50% by 2047 Unaided machines outperforming humans in every possible task Aggregate estimate from a 2024 survey of 2,778 researchers who had published in major AI venues A forecast about machine performance, not a singularity date. Grace and coauthors’ survey
50% by 2116 All human occupations becoming fully automatable Aggregate estimate from the same 2024 survey of 2,778 AI researchers A separate automation milestone; it should not be read as the predicted date of a singularity. Grace and coauthors’ survey
Around 2035–2040 The current deep-learning wave could fade if no fundamental innovation emerges Projection from a 2025 multi-logistic model A conditional model result, not a probability estimate or a singularity date. The paper argues a singularity is not likely in the foreseeable future under its analysis. The model paper

The dates therefore cannot be combined into a single consensus timeline: the surveys and model use different definitions, methods and assumptions. The 2012/2013 expert survey is also an older snapshot of opinion, while the 2025 model’s conclusion depends on the condition that no fundamental innovation emerges.

Is the singularity predicted for 2045?

Yes—if “predicted” means Kurzweil’s own stated forecast. His official Q&A says, “I set the date for the Singularity—representing a profound and disruptive transformation in human capability—as 2045.” That wording identifies the source and the meaning of the date: it is his forecast under his definition, not a date established by researchers collectively.

MIT News quoted Kurzweil in 2025 saying, “By 2045, once we have fully merged with AI, our intelligence will no longer be constrained … it will expand a millionfold,” and that “This is what we call the singularity.” The claim describes his vision of the future; it should not be mistaken for evidence that such a merger or millionfold increase has occurred.

Why is there no settled scientific date?

Forecasts depend on what counts as the event. “High-level machine intelligence,” machines outperforming humans across tasks, automating every occupation, and self-improving intelligence that rapidly transforms human capability describe different outcomes. A date attached to one does not automatically answer when another will happen.

The available surveys aggregate respondents’ judgments about defined AI milestones, while Kurzweil offers a named forecast rooted in his account of the singularity. No reviewed source establishes a validated probability or calendar year for a technological singularity using one shared definition. A responsible short answer is therefore: Kurzweil says 2045, but there is no agreed scientific date.

Where to read Kurzweil’s argument

Readers who want the reasoning behind the forecast can turn to Kurzweil’s The Singularity Is Nearer: When We Merge with AI, identified by MIT News as one of his best-known books, or his earlier The Singularity Is Near, whose official Q&A states the 2045 date. These books present Kurzweil’s case; they are not independent confirmation that his forecast will come true.
