Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOn a Windows laptop, turn off Settings → System → Display → Brightness → Change brightness automatically when lighting changes, then set Change brightness based on content to Off if the screen shifts with webpages or video scenes. If it still changes, disable Intel Display Power Savings if available and check the laptop maker’s display utility. The right fix depends on what triggers the change: room light, screen content, inactivity, power, or a possible hardware fault.
Identify what triggers the brightness change
Watch when the screen changes before adjusting settings. Different features can look alike but require different fixes.

| What you notice | Likely cause | First thing to try |
|---|---|---|
| Brightness changes as you move between sunlight and a darker room | Ambient-light sensor and automatic brightness | Turn off automatic brightness based on lighting. |
| Brightness or contrast shifts when a bright webpage becomes dark, or between video scenes | Content-adaptive brightness, Intel Display Power Savings, HDR, or video-enhancement software | Turn off content-based brightness; then check graphics power-saving settings. |
| The display dims after several minutes without keyboard or mouse activity and brightens when you resume | Idle-screen dimming or screen timeout | Adjust the screen timeout or idle-dimming setting. |
| Brightness changes when you unplug or reconnect the charger | Battery power profile, display power savings, HDR, or a manufacturer utility | Compare the same content on AC and battery; check power and HDR settings. |
| The brightness slider moves, but the picture does not change | Display driver, hotkey software, firmware, or hardware | Check whether you are controlling the built-in screen and update the laptop maker’s display driver. |
| Brightness changes with flicker, lines, color shifts, blackouts, or lid movement | Possible sensor, display cable, panel, or backlight fault | Back up important data and arrange hardware diagnosis. |
Windows distinguishes ambient-light adjustment from content-adaptive brightness, which can change brightness and contrast according to what appears on a supported built-in display. Microsoft’s explanation of content-adaptive brightness describes the latter feature.
Turn off automatic brightness in Windows 11
- Open Start → Settings.
- Select System → Display.
- Expand Brightness if needed.
- Turn off Change brightness automatically when lighting changes, if the option appears.
The setting may appear as a checkbox or toggle, or may be absent. Windows only exposes it when the built-in display, sensor, firmware, and driver support the feature. Microsoft’s Windows brightness and color guidance covers automatic adjustment based on lighting.

Stop brightness changes that follow screen content
If a white page looks different from a dark page, or brightness shifts during video scenes, the ambient-light setting may not be responsible. On some Windows 11 laptops with built-in screens, content-adaptive brightness changes both brightness and contrast to save power.
- Open Settings → System → Display.
- Expand Brightness.
- Find Change brightness based on content.
- Set it to Off. If the choices are Off, Always, and On Battery Only, choose Off for consistent output on both power states.
This can reduce power efficiency. A change between dark and bright video scenes may be the intended behavior of this feature, not a display defect.
Disable Intel Display Power Savings
Intel’s display power-saving feature can change brightness separately from Windows ambient-light control, especially on battery power. The setting is not present on every Intel laptop; the manufacturer may control it or hide it.

- Select System → Power.
- Under On Battery, set Display Power Savings to Off.
- If there is a separate plugged-in setting and you want the same behavior on AC, turn it off there too.
- Restart the laptop and test again.
Intel documents Display Power Savings as a possible cause of brightness changes on some built-in screens in its Display Power Savings troubleshooting guidance. Older Intel software may use labels such as Display Power Saving Technology or Intel DPST; do not assume those older controls are available on current systems. Disabling the feature may increase battery drain.
Check the laptop maker’s display utility
If Windows’ controls are missing or the screen still changes, look in the laptop manufacturer’s installed system-control, battery, or performance utility. Search its settings for terms such as:
- Adaptive brightness or smart display
- Display power savings or panel power saver
- Dynamic contrast or local contrast enhancement
- Eye care, eco mode, or battery optimization
- Video enhancement or intelligent display
Names and menu paths differ by model, so use the manufacturer’s support page for your exact laptop model rather than following a generic path. This step is especially relevant when a Windows control is unavailable or appears off but the behavior continues.

Check HDR, charger state, and idle dimming
Test whether HDR is changing the picture
HDR and SDR content use different brightness and color handling. Switching HDR modes or power states can therefore change how bright the picture looks without indicating a fault. On some laptops, HDR turns off automatically on battery to conserve power.
- Open Settings → System → Display → HDR.
- Temporarily turn HDR off and view the same content again.
- If the shift stops, either keep HDR off or adjust the available SDR/HDR brightness controls. Check whether the laptop is configured to turn HDR off on battery.
Windows provides more detail about power behavior and SDR/HDR controls in its HDR settings guidance. A brief black screen while HDR changes state can occur; a brightness or color change during a transition is not by itself proof of a defect.
Adjust screen dimming after inactivity
If the screen dims only after you stop using the laptop and brightens again when you move the mouse or press a key, check the idle power rule rather than adaptive brightness.

- Expand Screen, sleep, & hibernate timeouts.
- Increase the relevant screen timeout, or choose a longer interval if you do not want the display to dim so soon.
- Check the active power mode and Battery Saver behavior.
A longer timeout keeps the screen active for longer and uses more power.
Update the display driver in the right order
Use the driver supplied for your exact laptop before trying a generic graphics package. Laptop makers may customize graphics, power, hotkey, and sensor behavior, and a generic driver can remove controls the manufacturer provides.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Install pending Windows Updates.
- Visit the laptop manufacturer’s support page and identify the device using its exact model or serial number.
- Install the current graphics driver for the laptop’s operating system. If available and relevant, also install the manufacturer’s chipset, hotkey, or sensor drivers.
- Restart and test both on battery and while plugged in.
If the problem began immediately after a graphics-driver update, try the laptop maker’s supported driver or the driver version that worked before rather than assuming the newest generic package is best. Microsoft recommends updating the display adapter when brightness controls are missing or ineffective; Intel also recommends the manufacturer’s driver in its brightness-control troubleshooting guidance.

If the brightness slider does not work
- Check which display you are controlling. Windows may not provide its normal brightness slider for an external monitor. Use the monitor’s buttons, on-screen menu, or manufacturer software instead.
- Try the brightness keys. Some laptops require holding Fn while pressing a brightness key.
- Check the hotkey utility. A missing manufacturer system-control or hotkey component can interfere with brightness keys.
- Disconnect docks and external displays temporarily, then restart. This helps isolate whether the built-in panel is responding.
- Update the display driver using the manufacturer-first sequence above.
- Test in Safe Mode or a clean boot if a third-party display, color, or video utility may be taking control.
Microsoft notes that the slider may not appear for desktop computers or external monitors and recommends checking the display adapter when it is absent or ineffective. Intel lists system-file commands in its troubleshooting guidance for a brightness slider that fails to update, but those commands are not a general fix for automatic brightness changes. Do not run commands such as sfc /scannow just because the display brightens or dims on its own; reserve that path for a specific control failure after ordinary driver checks.
Fixes for Mac, Ubuntu, and Chromebook
Mac laptop
- Open Apple menu → System Settings → Displays.
- Turn off Automatically adjust brightness, if shown.
- If the screen’s color or intensity seems to shift with room lighting, test True Tone off as well.
Apple says the automatic-brightness control appears only on displays with an ambient-light sensor, and turning it off can affect battery life and energy use. Apple’s automatic-brightness guidance explains the setting. True Tone changes color and intensity to suit ambient light; it is not the same as backlight brightness. On macOS Ventura 13 and later, it is in System Settings → Displays on supported displays. See Apple’s True Tone guidance. For a Mac running Windows through Boot Camp, use Windows and Boot Camp controls rather than macOS display settings; Apple’s Boot Camp Control Panel guide applies.
Ubuntu
- Open Activities → Power.
- Turn off Automatic Screen Brightness.
- Turn off Dim Screen if the display dims while idle.
- Test once on AC power and once on battery.
Automatic brightness depends on an integrated light sensor; idle dimming is a separate power-saving behavior. See Ubuntu’s guidance for automatic screen brightness and why the screen dims. Avoid starting with a universal terminal command: the right brightness method depends on the display server, driver, hardware, and desktop environment, and some software controls change the image digitally rather than the panel backlight.

Chromebook
ChromeOS does not have a universal, officially established user-facing switch for disabling every kind of automatic hardware brightness adjustment. Open Settings → Device → Displays, check Night Light schedules, and use the brightness keys or Quick Settings slider for manual adjustment. Install pending ChromeOS updates. If the brightness still changes independently of Night Light or user input, consult the Chromebook maker. Google’s Night Light guidance documents that color-temperature feature; Night Light is not the same as backlight control.
When to stop changing settings
Software settings are less likely to be the cause if brightness changes with lid movement, the image flickers, lines or color shifts appear, the display blacks out, or the screen cannot maintain a selected level. These signs can point to a sensor, display cable, panel, backlight, or graphics problem. Back up important files and contact the laptop manufacturer or a repair technician for diagnosis, especially if the symptom persists after the manufacturer’s driver and display controls have been checked. A screen that dims predictably after inactivity or during a documented power transition does not, on its own, show that the panel is failing.
