Two instruments do not provide two independent safeguards if one fault can disable both. Adding a second sensor may create redundancy, but the safety value depends on whether the channels can fail together through shared power, design, environment, procedures, or other common causes.
Can two redundant instruments fail at the same time?
Yes. A common-mode failure occurs when multiple components intended to compensate for one another fail through the same cause or failure mode. If that can defeat the safety function, an analysis cannot simply assume the failures are independent. U.S. rail design guidance makes this point for parallel redundant elements as well as monitor-and-check arrangements: 49 CFR Appendix F to Part 229.

That does not mean every pair of instruments will fail together. It means the possibility must be assessed in the context of the specific safety function, installation, and failure modes. “One instrument printed twice” is a useful metaphor for duplicated equipment that shares a decisive vulnerability, not a formal definition or standard requirement.
What makes two channels independent enough?
Redundancy describes an architecture; independence is a claim that needs evidence. IEC 61508:2010 says sufficient independence in the design and application of elements should be justified through common-cause failure analysis, including the likelihood of interference between elements and between elements and their environment in relation to the safety integrity level of the function. The cited text is a third-party-hosted copy of the 2010 standard, not an official IEC catalog page: IEC 61508-1/2/3/6 text.
#1 Best Overall
- Redundant Power Supply Design: ATX PS2 size with dual hot-swappable modules ensures uninterrupted performance during maintenance or failure. No front-end bracket is required, simplifying installation.
- High Efficiency & Certification: Certified 80 PLUS Gold ensures superior energy efficiency, reducing power consumption and operating costs.
- Monitoring and Protection: Includes "FSP Guardian" PSU monitoring software for real-time status tracking. LED status indicators provide at-a-glance operational feedback. Comprehensive protection mechanisms: over-current protection, short circuit protection, over-voltage protection, and fan failure protection.
- Durable and Versatile: 900 Wattage to support high-performance systems.
- Warranty & Support: Backed by a 5-year warranty for peace of mind and long-term reliability.
The standard text identifies approaches such as functional diversity, different technologies, avoiding common parts or support services whose failure could endanger all channels, and avoiding common operational, maintenance, or test procedures. These are possibilities for application-specific engineering judgment, not a checklist that guarantees independence.
Where can a shared failure enter?
- Power and support services: If both instruments rely on one supply or another shared service, its failure may remove both channels. Consider controllers and other shared components as part of the dependency chain.
- Technology and design: The same measurement principle, component behavior, or design flaw may affect both instruments. Diversity can reduce some shared vulnerabilities, but only if it addresses plausible causes for the actual application.
- Physical routing and environment: A single event, installation defect, or environmental condition may affect both channels. In a Rosemount 3051T pressure-transmitter FMEDA example, signal-cable routing separation is considered when estimating common-cause contribution; it is an example, not proof that another installation is independent. Emerson/exida FMEDA.
- People and procedures: A shared calibration, maintenance, testing, or operating procedure can propagate one error across channels. Separate instruments do not eliminate common procedural risks.
- Diagnostics and voting: Measurement comparison may help detect disagreement, but diagnostics only help with faults they can detect and with a system response that handles them appropriately. Voting logic, including the 2oo3 example in the FMEDA, does not establish independence by itself.
- Safety-function context: The relevant question is what failure could prevent the defined function from succeeding, and what evidence supports the claimed fault tolerance and reliability. European Commission JRC inspection guidance discusses hardware fault-tolerance constraints and whether common-cause effects are included in calculations: JRC guidance on safety-instrumented functions.
Does adding a second sensor make a system safer?
It can, but device count alone cannot establish how much safer a system is. Fault tolerance is an architectural consideration, while reliability calculations must also account for relevant common-cause effects. The JRC guidance treats these as questions for inspection and assessment, rather than offering a universal result for every redundant arrangement.

- ATX PS2 redundant size - Made In Taiwan.
- 500W Redundant Power Supply : Ensures continuous power by automatically switching to the second module if one fails, reducing the risk of downtime.
- Compact ATX PS2 Form Factor: Compatible with standard ATX PS2 cases, ensuring a secure fit for most server or workstation builds.
- Digital Power Management: Equipped with Guardian Monitor Software for real-time monitoring of power supply performance and system health.
- Hot-Swappable Modules: Allows for easy module replacement without interrupting the power supply, enhancing system uptime and reliability.
There is no generally applicable reliability-improvement figure established for adding a second sensor, nor a universal ranking of 1oo2, 2oo3, or diverse configurations. A valid comparison depends on the safety function, credible failure modes, environment, diagnostics, maintenance regime, and applicable standards. Product-specific failure-analysis figures should not be transferred to other instruments or installations.
How to evaluate a redundant instrument design
- Define the safety function. State what the instruments must detect or control, what failure matters, and the consequences being assessed.
- Map shared dependencies. Trace power, support services, controllers, signal paths, physical locations, and any other components or conditions that could affect multiple channels.
- Identify common failure causes. Examine whether common technology, design features, environment, installation, or procedures could defeat both channels.
- Assess detection and response. Specify which faults diagnostics can detect, how the system responds to disagreement, and which faults may remain undetected.
- Justify the architecture with analysis. Evaluate fault tolerance and reliability in the context of the actual application, including common-cause effects. Independence is not established merely because devices are separate or because a voting scheme is used.
The answer to “are these two instruments independent?” is therefore not a count of devices. It is a supported engineering argument that relevant shared failures are sufficiently unlikely for the safety function under consideration.
