Choose Reset this PC when you want Windows reinstalled without necessarily removing your personal files. Choose a clean install from bootable installation media when you intend to remove the existing Windows installation—especially if suspected malware persists or other recovery options have failed. A reset and a clean install are not interchangeable, and either route can put data at risk. Back up important files first.
What separates a reset from a clean install?
Reset this PC reinstalls Windows through Settings or the Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). Its effect on your data depends on the option you choose:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Keep my files: Keeps personal files but removes installed apps and settings.
- Remove everything: Removes personal files, apps, and settings as Windows is reinstalled.
Within Reset, Cloud download obtains a fresh copy of Windows, while Local reinstall uses files already on the PC and may not include the latest updates. Neither option means booting from a USB drive to perform a clean install. See Microsoft’s Reset your PC instructions.

Microsoft warns that this removes the existing Windows installation and files on the selected drive, including installed apps. By contrast, if you start Windows Setup from within a running Windows installation, Setup offers choices to keep personal files and apps, keep personal files only, or keep nothing. That is an in-place installation path, not the boot-from-media clean-install process. Microsoft’s guides explain the distinction in Ways to install Windows 11 and Reinstall Windows with the installation media.

When should you choose each option?
| Situation | Best starting point | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A recent Windows update seems to have caused a problem, and Windows starts | Try uninstalling the update or, if available, the Windows Update repair reinstall | These are less disruptive first steps. The repair reinstall is designed to preserve files, apps, and settings. |
| You want Windows reinstalled but need to keep personal files | Reset this PC > Keep my files | Personal files remain, but apps and settings are removed. |
| Suspected malware persists after a Windows Security scan | Consider a clean install from installation media if the problem continues | Microsoft identifies installation media and a clean install as an option for persistent malware. The process removes the Windows installation and files on the selected drive. |
| Windows will not start, or recovery options fail | Try available WinRE options; if they fail and you have no recovery drive, use installation media created on another working PC | Installation media is a fallback, but booting from it for a clean install removes the existing installation and data. |
| You are selling, donating, or clearing the PC | Compare Reset > Remove everything, including its clean-data option, with a clean install | Reset’s clean-data option is intended to make removed files harder to recover. A normal clean install should not be treated as certified secure erasure. |
Microsoft’s Windows Update repair reinstall is called Fix problems using Windows Update. On supported Windows 11 devices, it reinstalls the current version to repair system files and components while preserving apps, files, and settings. The option may be unavailable on devices subject to some update policies or management configurations. Check Microsoft’s instructions for reinstalling the current version of Windows before choosing a more disruptive route.
What to do before resetting or installing
- Back up important files. Microsoft warns that recovery options can cause data loss. Use a cloud backup or an external device, then confirm that the backup is complete and accessible before proceeding. Microsoft’s Recovery options in Windows guide describes recovery paths and risks.
- Check access to your BitLocker recovery key. If BitLocker is enabled, the key may be needed to access most recovery options in WinRE. Locate it before you need to enter recovery.
- Decide what must survive. Keep my files does not preserve apps or settings. A clean install launched by booting from media removes files on the selected drive as well as the current Windows installation.
- If creating installation media, use a blank USB drive. Microsoft’s media-creation process deletes the contents of the selected USB drive. Follow Create installation media for Windows.
- Consider manufacturer recovery media if factory software or hardware-specific drivers matter. Microsoft notes that this media typically includes drivers and factory apps that may not be present in generic Microsoft installation media.
How to decide in practice
- If the PC still starts and the issue followed an update, try update-related recovery first; use the Windows Update repair reinstall if it is available and preserving your setup matters.
- If your goal is a fresh Windows setup but you want personal files to remain, Reset’s Keep my files option is less destructive than a clean install—but plan to reinstall apps and restore settings.
- If persistent malware is the concern, or other recovery choices have failed, a bootable-media clean install is a reasonable next step under Microsoft’s guidance. It is not a guarantee against every malware, hardware, firmware, or account problem.
- If Windows does not start, use recovery options available in WinRE before moving to installation media. If those options fail, media created on another working PC can be a fallback, with the understanding that a clean install removes existing data.
Microsoft’s published instructions describe these methods and when to consider them, but do not provide a measured comparison of reset-versus-clean-install success rates. The choice should follow the problem and what you can afford to lose—not an assumption that one method fixes more PCs.
