The right choice depends on the task—not on which technology sounds more advanced. Define the workflow and the outcome you want to improve before choosing a device.
What is the difference between AR and VR?
AR adds digital information to a view of the physical environment, so a person can refer to instructions or visual cues while still seeing the real equipment, space, or product. VR immerses the user in a computer-generated environment. Extended reality (XR) is an umbrella term that includes AR, VR, and mixed reality (MR); MR allows digital and physical objects to interact in real time, according to Singapore’s Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA’s XR overview, updated 28 January 2026).

In practical terms, ask whether the real surroundings need to remain part of the task. If they do, AR is a reasonable starting point. If the value comes from entering a controlled or imagined environment, test VR. Neither choice guarantees better performance; the benefit has to be demonstrated for the specific workflow.

Which business tasks are better suited to AR or VR?
| Business task | Starting point | Why it may fit |
|---|---|---|
| Repairing or assembling equipment with step-by-step instructions | AR | Workers can keep the real equipment in view while following guidance. Bitkom reported remote maintenance and step-by-step instructions among AR applications in its 2024 German company survey. |
| Remote expert support for industrial work | AR | Guidance can accompany a worker who remains at the physical worksite. Gartner’s public 2024 abstract describes task guidance and expert support as industrial-aligned AR uses. |
| Practising a hazardous, rare, or complex procedure | VR candidate | A simulation can provide a setting for immersive practice. Microsoft’s previous-version enterprise guidance lists training and simulation; assess whether practice improves the training outcome you care about. |
| Reviewing a proposed design, site, or factory layout | VR candidate; compare with AR | VR can place reviewers inside a virtual design. AR may be more suitable when a proposed change must be considered in relation to a real site. Bitkom reported construction and planning as uses of both technologies. |
| Collaboration | Depends on the work | Consider AR when people need to coordinate while carrying out real tasks; consider VR when they need a shared simulated space. Bitkom reported collaboration as a VR application, but its survey was not a head-to-head comparison of outcomes. |
| Product marketing, sales, or immersive shopping | Test the audience and channel | VR can create an immersive customer environment. If customers need to see a product in their own surroundings, compare that experience with an AR visualization. Microsoft’s enterprise scenarios describe immersive shopping, while Bitkom reported marketing, fairs, and sales applications. |
The examples indicate where to begin evaluating, not which technology will work best in every organization. Microsoft’s enterprise scenarios page is previous-version guidance last updated 16 March 2022; use it as an example of documented use cases, not as current device or platform advice (Microsoft Learn: Enterprise use cases with Windows Mixed Reality).

What does the adoption evidence show?
Bitkom’s representative telephone survey interviewed 605 companies in Germany with at least 20 employees during calendar weeks 2–8 of 2024. One in five respondents said their company already used some AR or VR application. That is a Germany-specific survey result from 2024, not a worldwide adoption rate or evidence that an application succeeded.
| Survey response | Share | Scope |
|---|---|---|
| Companies already using some AR or VR application | 20% | 605 German companies with 20 or more employees, surveyed by telephone in weeks 2–8 of 2024 |
| Companies planning or discussing VR use | 36% | Same Bitkom survey and respondent group |
| Companies planning or discussing AR use | 29% | Same Bitkom survey and respondent group |
| AR use cases named: training or education; design or planning | 64%; 60% | Among companies using, planning, or discussing AR |
| VR use cases named: design or planning; training or education; collaboration | 74%; 61%; 46% | Among companies using, planning, or discussing VR |
| AR use cases named: remote maintenance; step-by-step instructions | 22%; 19% | Among companies using, planning, or discussing AR |
The use-case percentages combine companies already using a technology with companies planning or discussing it. They describe what respondents identified, not the share of all companies using each application and not a measured success rate. Bitkom published the survey findings on 29 May 2024 (Bitkom: How companies use augmented and virtual reality).

Gartner’s public 2024 abstract says enterprise AR headset use is concentrated in training and industrial efficiency, while expense and form factor constrain general-purpose devices (Gartner: Emerging Tech: Accelerate Augmented Reality HMD Adoption in Enterprise Markets). The public page is an abstract, so it supports that broad qualification—not a universal device recommendation. Taken together, the evidence supports evaluating a specific workflow rather than treating adoption figures as a reason to buy.
How should you evaluate an AR or VR pilot?
- Choose one workflow and its users. Start with a repeatable task, training challenge, design review, or customer experience—not a general goal to adopt XR.
- Set a baseline and target measure. Depending on the task, measures might include completion time, error or rework rate, task success, recall or retention, safety incidents, support calls, or customer conversion. These are possible evaluation measures, not results established by the cited surveys.
- Decide whether the physical environment must stay visible. If it must, investigate AR. If immersion or simulation is central, investigate VR. Compare with phone, tablet, projection, or conventional-screen approaches where they could serve the same task; the sources cited here do not establish that a headset is necessary.
- Check the operating requirements. Review hardware, application and content creation, integration, network and infrastructure, privacy, safety, employee participation, support, and total cost. Bitkom’s implementation guide announcement identifies use-case selection, data protection, hardware, content, costs, and success evaluation as topics to consider (Bitkom: When AR and VR are really worthwhile, 3 November 2023).
- Test with representative users in the real setting. Assess comfort, fit, hygiene, battery runtime, visibility, accessibility, interruption to the task, device management, and how well the workflow tolerates errors. There is no universal threshold for these factors; set criteria that reflect the work and users.
- Scale only if the pilot supports the intended outcome. Document what worked, the deployment barriers, and the costs and support needed at broader scale. The European Commission’s 2024 XR study identifies hardware, software, and infrastructure concerns alongside legal, business, technological, social, and ethical challenges (European Commission: Zero-distance XR applications and services, released 17 April 2024).
What can the evidence not tell you?
- The survey figures above are limited to German companies of 20 or more employees and to the 2024 field period. They should not be presented as global or current adoption rates.
- Gartner’s public page is an abstract, not the complete report; its visible summary supports the stated points about industrial use and general-purpose headset constraints.
- Microsoft’s enterprise scenarios are from a previous-version guide last updated 16 March 2022, so they are illustrative rather than evidence of current product availability or platform support.
- The European Commission study addresses adoption and implementation barriers across industrial ecosystems; it is not a comparison of devices or proof that AR or VR will pay off in a particular business.
- IMDA’s XR page includes Singapore-specific enterprise eligibility and funding context. Those terms should not be generalized to businesses elsewhere.
The cited material does not establish guaranteed return on investment, a universal adoption threshold, a best headset model, or that one technology is categorically superior.
