A Samsung phone’s Do Not disturb exceptions do not necessarily make it ring while Silent mode is on. To hear calls from chosen people while keeping other interruptions quiet, set the phone to Sound mode, then use Do not disturb (DND) to allow those callers. If you need every call to ring, use Sound mode without relying on DND exceptions.
Let selected callers ring while other interruptions stay quiet
- Open DND settings. Go to Settings > Notifications > Do not disturb. If those labels differ, touch and hold the Do not disturb tile in Quick settings or search Settings for “Do not disturb.” Samsung notes that screens and menu names can vary by device, software version, and region. Samsung’s US DND instructions show the settings and Quick settings route.
- Choose who can call. Under Allowed during Do not disturb, open the calls and messages options and select the people or contact group you want to reach you. Depending on the device, you may also be able to allow repeat callers. Review the available choices on your phone rather than assuming every model uses identical labels.
- Use Sound mode. Set the phone’s sound mode to Sound, then make sure ringtone volume is audible. DND can quiet other permitted-to-be-silenced interruptions while allowing configured calls; Silent mode can still suppress the ringtone. - Turn on DND when needed. Enable Do not disturb manually, or set a schedule in its settings. Samsung documents schedules and configurable exceptions for calls and messages, apps, alarms, and sounds; the available controls depend on model and software. See Samsung’s DND guide.
This setup is for chosen callers, not for hearing every call while the phone remains in Silent mode. For normal ringing from anyone, turn off DND if it is enabled, choose Sound mode, and set ringtone volume to the level you want.

If the caller still does not ring
- Check that DND allows the caller. Verify that the selected contact is included in the call exception and that DND is active only when you intend it to be.
- Check Sound mode and ringtone volume. A permitted call may still be inaudible if the phone is in Silent mode or ringtone volume is low. Samsung’s troubleshooting guidance points to the sound settings and ringtone volume slider. Samsung phone sound troubleshooting.
- Inspect that contact’s ringtone behavior. Samsung identifies a contact-level option called “Ring even when set to Vibrate or Mute.” If a particular contact behaves differently from the rest, open that contact’s ringtone or vibration options and check whether the option is enabled. Turn it off if that behavior is unwanted. Samsung troubleshooting steps.
- Check whether all sounds are muted. Go to Settings > Accessibility > Hearing enhancements and look for Mute all sounds. Samsung says this can mute media, notifications, system sounds, and the other person’s voice during calls—not just the ringtone. Samsung’s guide to no sound on a Galaxy phone.
- Restart if the settings look right but audio is still absent. Samsung includes restarting among the steps to try when a Galaxy device has no sound. Check the relevant volume and sound settings first. Samsung no-sound guidance.
If the phone rings when it should be quiet
- Review DND’s allowed callers and repeat-caller settings; the exception list may be broader than intended.
- Check whether the phone is in Sound mode and whether ringtone volume is raised.
- Inspect the specific contact’s ringtone settings for “Ring even when set to Vibrate or Mute.”
- During an incoming call, pressing the side Volume button can disable that call’s ringer. Samsung documents this as a way to silence the incoming call. Samsung sound troubleshooting.
Choose the setting that matches what you want

Samsung’s support materials are region-specific and menu layouts can change across models and software. If a listed path does not match, search Settings for “Do not disturb,” “Mute all sounds,” or “ringtone,” then check the matching control on your phone.
