When to Use Amazon EventBridge, SNS, or SQS

SQS queues work for consumers to poll, SNS pushes publications to subscribers, and EventBridge routes events by content. Learn when to use each alone or in combination.

Use Amazon SQS when a consumer should pull work from a queue at its own pace, Amazon SNS when one publisher should push a notification to multiple subscribers, and Amazon EventBridge when rules should route events according to their contents. They solve different parts of messaging: storage and work distribution, broadcast, and event selection. Combine them when an application needs more than one of those behaviors.

Choose by the behavior your application needs

Start with the delivery and routing requirement, not with a service name. Ask who should decide when processing happens, whether work must wait safely for a consumer, and whether the destination depends on fields in the event.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Choose SQS for a work queue: a producer adds jobs, and consumers retrieve them when ready. It is a natural fit for asynchronous tasks, buffering, and scaling workers independently from producers.
  • Choose SNS for broadcast: a publisher sends a notification to a topic, and SNS pushes it to subscribed endpoints. It fits fan-out when several subscribers should receive the same publication.
  • Choose EventBridge for event routing: producers publish events, and event patterns determine which targets receive matching events. It fits architectures where producers should not hard-code downstream routing decisions.
  • Combine services when one behavior does not cover the whole path. SNS can fan out to separate SQS queues; EventBridge can route matching events to SQS so a consumer can process them at its own pace.

A useful shorthand is: SQS answers “where can this work wait?”, SNS answers “who should receive this publication?”, and EventBridge answers “which destinations match this event?”

How the delivery models differ

Decision point Amazon SQS Amazon SNS Amazon EventBridge
Who initiates delivery? Consumers poll a queue and retrieve messages. SNS pushes published messages to subscribers. EventBridge evaluates rules and routes matching events to targets.
What is the main role? Work queue, asynchronous task handling, and buffering. Pub/sub notification and fan-out. Event bus and content-based event routing.
How are recipients selected? The queue is the destination; it does not select consumers based on message content. Topic subscriptions, optionally narrowed with subscription filter policies. Rules use event patterns to match content and select targets.
Does work wait in a queue? Yes. The AWS comparison guide says messages remain until consumed or expired, with a maximum retention of 14 days. The guide describes real-time push delivery, not queue-style persistence. The guide describes real-time event processing, not queue-style persistence.
Ordering FIFO queues support ordered delivery. FIFO topics support ordered delivery. AWS guidance says EventBridge does not provide message-ordering guarantees.
Typical destination shape Consumers that poll for work. HTTP/S endpoints, email, SMS, mobile push, Lambda, and SQS. AWS services, Lambda, API destinations, and other event buses.
Pricing dimensions in AWS’s guide API requests and data transfer. Requests, delivered notifications, and data transfer. Events published and target invocations.

The service roles and broad comparison above follow AWS’s decision guide, last updated November 2025. The table is a design aid, not a substitute for checking current service documentation for a particular integration, retention feature, or regional deployment.

When SQS is the right choice

Use a queue when work should wait for workers

With SQS, producers enqueue tasks and consumers poll for them. That separation is useful when a producer can finish its request without waiting for the full task, or when workers need to scale independently. For example, an image-upload workflow can put resize jobs on a queue while worker processes retrieve jobs as capacity allows. If uploads arrive in a burst, the queue gives workers a place to retrieve pending jobs without requiring the producer and worker fleet to operate at the same rate.

SQS is not a broadcast mechanism by itself. A message in a queue is work for consumers of that queue; if several independent teams each need their own copy of a notification, a queue alone does not provide the topic-and-subscriber selection model. Use SNS fan-out or EventBridge routing in front of separate queues when each consumer needs an independent processing path.

Choose FIFO only when sequence is a requirement

SQS FIFO queues support ordered delivery. That makes FIFO worth considering when the order in which related messages are handled is part of the application’s correctness requirements. Do not select FIFO merely because “ordered” sounds safer: first identify which messages must be sequenced and why. If jobs are independent, a standard work-queue design may be simpler. AWS’s comparison guide also describes SQS delivery as at least once, so application processing should tolerate a message being delivered more than once rather than assuming one delivery always equals one business action.

When SNS is the right choice

Use a topic when one publication has multiple recipients

SNS is a push-based pub/sub service: the publisher sends a message to a topic, and SNS delivers it to subscribers. It is a good starting point when multiple endpoints need a notification without making the publisher send separately to each one. AWS identifies endpoint choices such as email and SMS as SNS considerations, alongside service integrations such as Lambda and SQS.

For example, an order event may need to notify several teams. Publishing to SNS can separate the act of announcing the event from the list of subscribers. Subscription filter policies can limit which subscribers receive a publication, so a topic need not mean every subscriber receives every message. This is subscriber-side filtering, rather than a consumer polling a queue for work.

Use SNS FIFO when topic ordering matters

SNS FIFO topics support ordered delivery. If the publishing pattern calls for a topic that broadcasts while preserving order, a FIFO topic is the relevant SNS option. Ordering is not a reason to treat SNS as a work queue: the service’s delivery model remains push to subscribers. A subscriber that needs to pause, absorb a burst, or control its own processing pace can receive the fan-out through an SQS queue.

When EventBridge is the right choice

Use rules to keep routing out of producer code

EventBridge is useful when the producer should state what happened, while routing rules decide which destinations care. Event patterns match event content and direct matching events to targets. This lets downstream routing change without requiring every producer to know every consumer or embed all recipient decisions in its own code.

For example, AWS resource changes can be sent to an event bus and routed to selected handlers by rules that match relevant event fields. This differs from SNS’s topic subscription model: SNS is a natural fit for publishing to a set of subscribers, with subscription filters; EventBridge is a natural fit when event contents determine which target or targets should receive it. AWS Prescriptive Guidance describes EventBridge as commonly used with other messaging services, including SQS and SNS.

Do not depend on EventBridge ordering

AWS guidance does not provide an ordering guarantee for EventBridge. If correctness depends on processing events in sequence, do not assume that events routed through EventBridge will arrive in the original order. Reconsider the design around the ordering requirement, or use an ordering-capable FIFO queue or topic where that service fits the workflow.

The AWS comparison guide describes EventBridge delivery as at least once. That is a service delivery semantic, not a promise that application-level effects happen exactly once. If a repeated event could create duplicate charges, records, or side effects, the receiving application needs a way to recognize and safely handle repeats.

Common combinations and when they help

SNS to SQS: broadcast, then process independently

Use SNS-to-SQS fan-out when several consumers should each receive a copy of a notification, but each consumer also needs its own backlog and processing pace. Give each consumer its own queue, subscribe those queues to the SNS topic, and let each consumer poll its queue. This combines SNS’s broadcast role with queue buffering and independent processing. A slow consumer can work through its backlog without making every other subscriber process at the same speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This pattern is useful for an order notification sent to multiple teams or systems. The topic distributes the publication; each team’s queue provides a separate work stream. It is different from pointing all consumers at one shared queue, where the queue is being used to distribute work among consumers rather than giving each subscriber a separate copy.

EventBridge to SQS: match events, then buffer

Route matching EventBridge events to SQS when the event bus should select relevant events but the target consumer should control its processing pace. EventBridge rules perform content-based selection; the queue then holds work for consumers to retrieve. This can help when event production is bursty, when the worker needs a backlog, or when event producers should remain independent from downstream processing capacity.

These combinations are complementary rather than redundant: EventBridge or SNS handles routing or fan-out, while SQS provides a queue for downstream work. AWS Prescriptive Guidance on messaging describes using queue buffering with routing services as a way to combine those behaviors.

Use direct delivery when the extra layer is not needed

A combination adds another service boundary to configure and operate. If one queue is enough for asynchronous work, start with SQS. If one topic’s subscribers can receive direct push delivery and do not need independent queue buffering, SNS alone may be sufficient. If routing rules can select destinations and targets do not need to control consumption through a queue, EventBridge may be sufficient. Add a second service to meet a specific delivery, routing, or buffering requirement—not simply because a larger architecture seems more flexible.

Ordering, retries, and duplicate-safe processing

Ordering and delivery guarantees affect the application that consumes messages, not just the service configuration. FIFO queues and FIFO topics support ordered delivery; EventBridge has no ordering guarantee. SQS and EventBridge are described by AWS’s guide as at-least-once delivery, which means consumers should be designed so that receiving an item again does not blindly repeat an irreversible business action.

  • Make handlers idempotent where duplicates matter. A repeated delivery should not create a second copy of an effect that should happen once. The specific mechanism depends on the application’s data model and transaction boundaries.
  • Separate transport delivery from business completion. Receiving a message is not itself proof that the intended downstream work completed successfully.
  • Plan failure handling for the chosen integration. Retry behavior, dead-letter handling, and delivery details depend on the selected service and target integration. Confirm the current documentation for the exact path rather than assuming all three services behave identically.
  • Write down the ordering boundary. If only events for a particular entity must be ordered, identify that scope explicitly; if order does not affect correctness, avoid imposing it as a blanket constraint.

The decision guide’s service-level delivery semantics should not be read as a guarantee of exactly-once business effects. Application-level idempotency, retries, failure handling, and the selected integration still matter.

How to compare cost without guessing

There is no universal cheapest choice in AWS’s decision guide. It identifies different billing dimensions: SQS API requests and data transfer; SNS requests, delivered notifications, and data transfer; EventBridge published events and target invocations. The guide also mentions free-tier allowances, but those allowances and current rates depend on AWS’s current pricing terms and the relevant usage.

For an architecture estimate, model the actual message volume, number of recipients or targets, request pattern, data transferred, and downstream invocations. Fan-out can increase delivery activity because one publication may reach multiple subscribers. Routing to a target and then buffering in a queue has more than one service’s usage dimensions to consider. Compare the resulting workload in the AWS pricing information for the intended region; do not infer total cost from a service’s headline role or from the number of application components alone.

A practical selection checklist

  1. Identify the unit being sent. If it is a job for a worker, begin with a queue. If it is a notification for subscribers, begin with a topic. If it is an event whose fields should decide destinations, begin with an event bus and rules.
  2. Decide whether the consumer must control its pace. If pending work should wait while consumers poll when ready, SQS fits. If push delivery is suitable, SNS or EventBridge may avoid introducing a queue.
  3. Decide how destinations are selected. Use SNS subscriptions and filters for topic subscribers; use EventBridge patterns for content-based event routing. If one consumer needs an independent backlog, connect routing to its own SQS queue.
  4. Check sequence requirements. Select SQS FIFO or SNS FIFO when ordered delivery is necessary. Do not rely on EventBridge for ordering.
  5. Design for repeats and failures. Verify the delivery and retry behavior of each service-target integration, and make business effects safe against duplicate processing where needed.
  6. Estimate the full workload. Include requests, event or notification deliveries, targets, and data transfer, then check current regional pricing and limits for the intended design.

Bottom line for common architecture questions

For “What is the difference between SNS and SQS?”, SNS pushes publications to subscribers; SQS stores work for consumers to poll. For “EventBridge or SNS for fan-out?”, choose SNS when the core need is publishing to topic subscribers, and EventBridge when rules should select destinations from event content. For “Can SNS send messages to SQS?”, yes: SNS can fan out notifications to SQS queues, giving each queue’s consumer an independently processed backlog. For work that should wait in a queue, use SQS; for content-based routing, use EventBridge; for broadcast, use SNS.
