When to Reset Your Router: Reboot vs. Factory Reset, and What to Do First

Reboot a router for a temporary glitch. Factory-reset only after troubleshooting or when starting over—and save the settings you’ll need to configure again.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Restart your router for a temporary connection problem; factory-reset it only when troubleshooting has failed, you need a fresh setup, or you are handing the device back. A reboot preserves your configuration. A factory reset erases it, so you may need to set up Wi-Fi and reconnect your devices afterward.

Reboot or factory reset: which one do you need?

People use “reset” to mean two different things. A reboot (restart) turns the router off and back on. A factory reset returns it to default settings and removes custom configuration. Linksys recommends trying a reboot first, then resetting and reconfiguring only if the problem persists (Linksys support).

Action What it does Effect on settings When it fits
Reboot Power-cycles the router and briefly interrupts the connection. Ordinarily preserves saved configuration. A temporary glitch or a troubleshooting step recommended by your ISP or router maker.
Factory reset Restores default configuration. Deletes custom settings and requires setup again. Persistent router-specific problems after basic checks, a deliberate fresh start, or return or handoff of the device.

When should you reset your router?

Restart for a temporary or whole-network connection problem

If several devices suddenly lose internet access, check the cables and equipment lights, then restart the modem and router according to their manuals. A restart may refresh the connection without erasing saved router settings. Google’s Android guidance gives one example: unplug the home router, confirm its lights go out, wait 30 seconds, reconnect it, and wait for the lights to return (Google Android Help). That timing is an example, not a universal rule; follow your equipment’s instructions if they differ.

Factory-reset only after simpler checks fail

Consider a factory reset when router-specific problems keep returning after basic troubleshooting and a reboot, or when you intentionally want to start over. It may also be appropriate if you have forgotten the router’s administrator password or are returning or transferring the equipment. Before you proceed, confirm you can complete setup afterward; ISP-provided equipment or a connection with special settings may require provider guidance.

Do not reset the router to fix an ISP outage

If all devices remain offline after a restart, or the modem or router indicators point to an upstream problem, check your provider’s outage information or contact its support team. A factory reset cannot repair a service disruption outside your home network (Google Fi Wireless Help).

Check where the problem is before resetting

  1. Compare devices. Try another phone, computer, or tablet on the same Wi-Fi. If only one device is affected, the issue may be with that device rather than the router or internet service (Apple Support).
  2. Check the device’s Wi-Fi connection. Make sure Wi-Fi is enabled and the device is within range. If your router has separate frequency bands, trying another supported band can help isolate a connection issue (Google Android Help).
  3. Inspect connections and lights. Check that cables are firmly seated, then compare modem and router lights with the equipment manual. Light meanings vary by model (Google Fi Wireless Help).
  4. Restart using the documented procedure. If the problem affects the network, restart the modem and router as directed by the provider or manufacturer, then give them time to reconnect.
  5. Check for service trouble. If the whole network remains offline or the status lights suggest a connection problem, contact the ISP before considering a factory reset.
  6. Escalate persistent router-specific issues. If the connection returns but the router continues to malfunction, consult support for its exact model and consider a factory reset only after saving the settings you need.

Prepare before a factory reset

A factory reset can take your home network offline until you configure the router again. Record the information you rely on and check whether the manufacturer offers a settings backup. AT&T advises recording custom settings before restoring a gateway to its original settings (AT&T support).

How to restart or factory-reset safely

To restart

Use the router’s app or web interface if it provides a restart control, or follow the model’s documented power-cycle steps. If your setup includes a separate modem, use the provider’s or manufacturer’s instructions for restarting the modem and router. Wait for the status lights to settle and the equipment to reconnect before testing.

To factory-reset

Use the reset control in the router’s app or web interface, or the physical button, exactly as the instructions for your model specify. Do not assume a button-hold duration from another brand applies. Procedures differ: TP-Link says to hold the reset button for more than 10 seconds on covered models, while Verizon publishes a separate procedure for its equipment (TP-Link support; Verizon Router FAQs). The TP-Link timing is model-specific, not a general standard.

Afterward, follow the router’s setup instructions, restore the settings you recorded, and reconnect devices using the configured Wi-Fi name and password. Mesh points or app-managed equipment may need to be added again (Google Home and Nest Help).
