Own-damage (OD) cover can be worth paying for if a theft or major repair would be difficult to fund yourself. It covers specified losses to your own bike, subject to the policy’s terms; it does not replace third-party liability insurance. The right choice depends on your bike’s insured declared value (IDV), your exposure to covered risks, your ability to absorb a loss, and the premium, deductibles and exclusions in the quote.
What own-damage cover protects
OD cover is the part of motor insurance that protects the insured vehicle itself against specified damage or loss. A reviewed Royal Sundaram standalone two-wheeler prospectus lists covered causes including fire, explosion, theft, riot, earthquake, specified weather events such as flood and storm, accidental external means, malicious acts, terrorism, transit, and landslide or rockslide. These are examples from one insurer’s prospectus, not a guarantee that every policy covers the same events. Check the schedule and full wording for the policy you are considering.

In India, third-party liability insurance is the compulsory baseline for vehicles plying on public roads, according to IRDAI’s motor-insurance guidance. A standalone OD policy does not provide that liability cover; it must be paired with active third-party insurance. Package or comprehensive cover combines own-damage and third-party sections, but the exact terms still depend on the policy.

What it may not pay for
OD cover does not mean every cost after an incident will be reimbursed in full. The Royal Sundaram prospectus lists consequential loss, depreciation, wear and tear, mechanical or electrical breakdown, and certain tyre-only damage among exclusions or limitations. It also identifies exclusions involving an intoxicated driver, losses outside the stated geographical area, and war-related perils. The precise exclusions and any add-on exceptions vary by policy.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Settlement is also affected by the IDV, deductibles, policy conditions and repair process. The reviewed prospectus describes the insurer’s liability as capped by IDV less wreck value in the relevant settlement provision. Read the policy wording rather than assuming that a covered cause means a full replacement or repair bill will be paid.
When the premium may be worthwhile
Consider OD cover more seriously when the bike still has meaningful value, theft or a substantial repair is a material risk, or paying for a major covered loss would strain your finances. If you can comfortably self-fund a loss, declining OD or choosing a lower-cost option may be reasonable—but only after confirming your third-party policy remains active and checking what protection you would give up.

Compare the actual annual premium with the potential covered loss, not with a generic online estimate. IDV is the insured value used in the policy; deductibles, depreciation treatment and exclusions can reduce the amount paid. The available sources do not establish a representative current premium range or a universal break-even price. Get quotes for your specific bike and compare equivalent cover.

IRDAI advises buyers to compare three or more quotes and cautions that a lower premium can come with higher deductibles, lower coverage or lower IDV. Its guidance identifies vehicle age, claims history and IDV among factors affecting OD premium. Compare the following for each quote:

Check the policy term, especially on a new bike
IRDAI explains that a bundled policy for a new two-wheeler can include five years of third-party cover while its own-damage section lasts one year. If that applies to your policy, the OD section needs renewal after its first year; the longer third-party term does not automatically extend it. The reviewed standalone OD prospectus describes a one-year term or a term co-terminus with existing third-party cover. Check your own schedule for dates and cover periods.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Decide whether an add-on earns its extra cost
Add-ons can change how a policy handles particular costs, but their names do not guarantee identical protection across insurers. The reviewed Royal Sundaram prospectus gives examples including depreciation waiver, roadside assistance, return-to-invoice, and cover for electrical or non-electrical accessories. IRDAI’s product listing also includes a helmet-cover add-on for a two-wheeler standalone OD product. For any option, check eligibility, limits, exclusions, repair conditions and additional premium in the actual wording; none is automatically essential.
