Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteQuit when the startup’s needs justify your full-time commitment and your household can absorb the resulting financial and benefits changes—not because you’ve reached a universal savings target. There is no evidence-based number of months of savings or customer-demand milestone that applies to everyone. Work through your personal finances, the company’s actual funding and costs, evidence of demand, and the terms of any equity or employment agreement before deciding.
Start with the cost of leaving your job
Resigning changes more than your paycheck. List your essential household expenses, debt payments, dependents, available savings, and any other income. Then identify what would change when employment ends, including benefits or other compensation. Consider how long your resources could cover both household needs and any startup costs you expect to pay personally.

There is no universal runway figure supported by the sources cited here. Your appropriate cushion depends on your obligations, the business’s cash needs, how reliably it can generate income, and what alternatives you have if it takes longer than expected.

Count savings and financing that is actually committed. Treat a prospective investment, loan, future customer revenue, or planned salary as uncertain until its terms and availability are clear. The SBA notes that funding needs vary by business and that personal finances and the founder’s vision affect the business’s financial future; it does not prescribe a personal savings threshold. SBA business-planning guidance discusses funding approaches including self-funding, loans, and investors.

- If you want to build a better future, you must believe in secrets.
- The great secret of our time is that there are still uncharted frontiers to explore and new inventions to create. In Zero to One, legendary entrepreneur and investor Peter Thiel shows how we can find singular ways to create those new things.
Build a business forecast before making the leap
Write down what the startup will sell, how it expects to reach customers, what it will cost to operate, and how it expects to bring in money. The IRS startup checklist prompts new business owners to consider their financial resources, products or services, marketing, planning, operations, and recruiting. IRS Publication 583 (December 2024) is a starting point for that planning.
For funding requests, the SBA recommends financial projections covering five years, with greater quarterly or monthly detail for the first year. That is guidance for preparing business forecasts—not a recommendation to hold five years of personal savings, and not proof that the startup can replace your salary. Make assumptions explicit and revisit them as costs, funding, or customer evidence changes. SBA planning guidance explains the role of business plans and projections.

Keep business and personal finances distinguishable
If you begin operating the business while employed, track its money separately from household spending. The IRS says separate business and personal accounts make recordkeeping easier. IRS guidance on income and expenses covers that practice. Clear records also help you see whether the startup is consuming personal funds faster than planned.

Ask what the startup needs from you now
A business plan can make assumptions and funding needs visible, but it cannot establish that a business will succeed or that it will pay you a replacement salary. Decide what evidence would make the next commitment of time and money reasonable for this specific business. That might involve progress toward a product, customer conversations, paid work, or another concrete milestone; the available official sources do not establish a universal demand threshold.

Compare the cost of waiting with the cost of leaving. If a time-sensitive opportunity genuinely requires your full-time attention, identify why and what would change if you delayed. If the work can continue at a sustainable pace alongside employment, a staged transition may reduce financial exposure while you learn more.
Compare the available paths
| Path | What to weigh |
|---|---|
| Quit now | Whether the startup needs your full-time effort now; whether committed funding and realistic projections cover business needs; and whether your household can handle lost income or benefits. |
| Wait before resigning | What additional evidence, financing, or savings would change your decision, and whether waiting would materially harm the opportunity. |
| Build alongside employment or reduce hours | Whether the business can progress with less of your time, whether your employer permits the arrangement, and whether a staged transition is practical. |
| Take leave or another temporary arrangement | Whether such an option exists under your employment terms and local rules, and whether it gives the startup enough time without requiring an immediate permanent exit. |
This is a decision framework, not a formula or legal conclusion. Employment restrictions, benefits, tax consequences, and available leave depend on your location and documents; get advice suited to your circumstances.

Read equity and compensation terms, not just the headline percentage
A quoted ownership percentage does not tell you when shares vest, what conditions apply, or whether you can turn them into cash. The SEC notes that vesting can depend on time in employment or performance, and that a SAFE provides for a future ownership interest only if specified triggering events occur. Read the actual grant or investment documents and ask a qualified legal and tax adviser to explain how the terms apply to you. SEC guidance on common startup securities describes these instruments.
Private-company shares are often illiquid. The SEC identifies a public offering, acquisition, merger, or liquidation as possible routes to liquidity, but none provides a dependable date for personal cash. Do not budget private equity as rent money or assume a funding announcement guarantees a salary. SEC guidance on exit strategies and liquidity explains the distinction.

Make a decision you can revisit
- Write down the household picture. Record essential expenses, savings, debt, dependents, other income, and the employment benefits or compensation that would change after resignation.
- Estimate the startup’s cash needs. Separate personal spending from business costs and distinguish committed funds from hoped-for financing or revenue.
- Document the forecast. Write down costs, revenue assumptions, timing, and the conditions that would require more cash. Use projections as planning tools, not guarantees.
- Choose evidence and milestones. Define what progress would justify committing more time or money, and when you will reassess. There is no source-backed universal customer threshold.
- Check the documents. Review employment restrictions, benefits, compensation, equity, vesting, and ownership terms with appropriately qualified advisers.
- Compare reversible options. Decide whether quitting, waiting, reducing hours, taking leave, or continuing alongside work best fits the opportunity and your household’s ability to manage risk.
Revisit the decision when a material assumption changes—for example, a funding commitment falls through, costs rise, customer evidence changes, or your personal circumstances shift. A useful choice is one grounded in current facts and a plan for what you will do if the startup takes longer than expected.
