Convert an image to JPEG when it is a photograph or other continuous-tone picture, you need a smaller file that opens almost anywhere, and you do not need transparent pixels or every original pixel. Keep the original file either way. No tool is fastest in every case. A one-off export from a graphical editor and a batch conversion of hundreds of files are different jobs, and Adobe, the ImageMagick project and the GIMP project do not publish a speed comparison of their tools, so the quickest route depends on how many files you convert and how comfortable you are with the command line.
When JPEG is the right choice
JPEG suits images that are rich in smooth tonal change, such as camera photos, scanned pictures and most continuous-tone artwork. Adobe describes JPEG as commonly used for photographs and continuous-tone images in web documents (Adobe, “Image file formats supported in Photoshop,” updated March 27, 2026). Three conditions usually point the same way:

- The image is a photo or a continuous-tone picture. Photographs compress well because the format can discard fine detail that the eye is unlikely to miss at normal viewing sizes.
- File size matters more than pixel-perfect fidelity. Adobe’s compression guide states that JPEG uses lossy compression to reduce file size by removing image detail (Adobe, “Compare image compression types in Photoshop,” updated February 23, 2026).
- Broad compatibility matters. JPEG is among the most widely supported image formats, so a JPEG is the safer choice for uploads, email attachments and sharing with people whose software you do not control.
When another format is the better choice
JPEG is not a universal replacement for other formats. The table below lists the situations where a different choice protects the image.

|---|---|---|
| Logo, cutout or graphic with transparent areas | A transparency-capable format such as PNG | Adobe documents PNG transparency and states that JPEG does not support it (Adobe, “Image file formats supported in Photoshop,” updated March 27, 2026). |
| Fine text, sharp edges, flat colour or smooth gradients | Compare the JPEG against the original before choosing; use PNG if the JPEG shows visible artefacts | JPEG is documented for photographs and continuous-tone images, not for every image type, so these content types need a visual check. |
| Image you will edit again | Keep the editable or lossless master and export JPEG only as a delivery copy | Each lossy save discards more data, so repeated editing compounds visible degradation. |
| Exact pixel preservation required | Keep the original file | JPEG is lossy, so the discarded data cannot be recovered. |
What JPEG costs you
JPEG trades detail for size, and the quality setting controls how much detail is lost. A lower quality setting produces a smaller file and more visible artefacts; a higher setting keeps more detail and a larger file. The setting you need is the lowest one that still looks correct at the size the image will be displayed.

Re-saving compounds the loss
Opening a JPEG, editing it and saving it as a JPEG again discards more data each time. If you need to adjust a JPEG later, start from the original. Converting a JPEG back to PNG does not restore detail that was already discarded; the PNG will be the same lossy image in a different container.
Bit depth and colour mode
Photoshop’s help documentation says JPEG supports 8-bit images in the described workflow and that saving a 16-bit image automatically lowers its bit depth. Photoshop supports RGB, grayscale and CMYK JPEG output, but Adobe cautions that some applications may not read CMYK JPEGs. If the file is destined for the web or ordinary viewers, convert to RGB before export.

Which tool makes the conversion fast
The fastest tool is the one that fits the number of files and your existing workflow. The three tools below cover different jobs.

Adobe Photoshop
Choose File, then Save As or Export, and select JPEG as the format. The JPEG options dialog provides the quality control. Photoshop is the most direct route when you are already editing the image there, because the adjustments, cropping and export happen in one place. For a single photo, a graphical export is usually faster to set up than a script.

ImageMagick
ImageMagick is the better choice when you convert a folder of images, want the same settings applied every time, or need the conversion inside a larger automated pipeline. The basic pattern is:
magick input.png -quality 85 output.jpg
The value 85 is only an example, not a recommended setting; test the result at the size you will display it. Before you run a batch, confirm three things against the documentation for your installed version: the source format, the output path, and how transparent pixels will be handled. JPEG cannot store transparency, so transparent areas must be flattened onto a background colour you choose before the JPEG is written, and the exact option for doing this varies by version.

- Convert images to jpeg, gif, png, bmp, tiff and more
- Rotate, resize and compress digital photos
- Easily add captions or watermarks to your images
- Compress thousands of photos at a time with batch conversion
- Convert images directly from the right-click menu
GIMP
GIMP can open and export JPEG files, which makes it a practical free desktop option when you need light editing and export without a paid subscription. Check the export dialog in your installed version, because the labels and controls are not identical across releases.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:

- Keep the original file if it may be edited again, and work on a copy for the JPEG export.
- Decide whether the image has transparency or needs exact pixel preservation. If either applies, keep or choose a format that supports those requirements instead of JPEG.
- For a photo intended for sharing or upload, export a JPEG and choose a quality setting that looks acceptable at the size the image will be displayed. No universal quality number is supported by the official documentation.
- Pick the tool that matches the job: Photoshop for graphical work, ImageMagick for repeatable command-line conversion, or GIMP for a free desktop editor with JPEG export.
- Open the exported file and check edges, text, gradients, colour and file size before you replace or delete anything.
What to check in the exported file
- Text and sharp edges for halos or blurring, especially in screenshots and diagrams.
- Smooth gradients for banding or blocky patches.
- Colour appearance compared with the original, particularly if the source was CMYK or 16-bit.
- Transparent areas, which should now show the background colour you chose rather than leftover edge pixels.
- File size against your target. A smaller file is only a gain if the image still looks right.
Adobe’s documentation was last updated in early 2026, and tool interfaces change between versions, so confirm current menu labels and command options in the documentation for the version you run.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can I convert a JPEG back to PNG without losing quality?
No. JPEG discards image data when it is saved, so converting the file to PNG keeps the same lossy result in a lossless container. Recovering the lost detail is not possible from the JPEG alone, which is why the original file should be kept.
Which quality setting should I use for a JPEG?
No universal number is documented by Adobe, ImageMagick or GIMP. Export a test copy at the quality you are considering, view it at the size it will be displayed, and choose the lowest setting that shows no visible artefacts.
