Hosted PDF API or Local PDF Library for Shipping Labels at Production Scale

A hosted label API and a local PDF library solve different parts of the same problem. Here is how to decide, what each option documents today, and which production risks to test before committing.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

No universal winner exists between a hosted label API and a local PDF library. A hosted carrier or shipping platform API can create the label itself, so your application receives a PDF, PNG, or printer-language file that the carrier or platform generated. A local library such as PDFKit gives your application direct control over the document and its output stream, but your team then owns the rendering environment, fonts, and the operational behavior of that code path. The right choice depends on your carrier mix, your printers, your peak load, and how each option fails. The documentation for these tools does not provide an apples-to-apples performance benchmark or price comparison, so the decision has to be tested against your own workload.

What you are actually choosing between

The phrase “hosted PDF API” covers two different things. Some services generate a label because a carrier requires it to be created on the carrier’s side: the label carries that carrier’s tracking number, barcode, and routing data, and the only way to get it is to ask the carrier. Other services are general document renderers. For shipping labels, the first category matters most, because a locally rendered PDF cannot create a valid carrier label by itself. It can only lay out information you already have.

That distinction changes the question. If a carrier issues the label, the real decision is how you integrate with that carrier’s label endpoint and where you store the result. If you control the label layout entirely, for example for an internal pick ticket or a return slip with no carrier tracking, a local library is a natural fit. Many production systems use both: a carrier API for the label and a local renderer for packing slips, customs forms you produce yourself, or reprints.

DHL eCommerce Americas Label API

DHL eCommerce Americas publishes its Label API at version 4.0.0 for the United States region. It supports domestic and international labels and exposes create, get, and void operations. A create request produces one shipping label, and the label contents come back directly in the response. Output formats are PNG, PDF, and ZPL.

Two identifier details affect design. DHL describes a customer-provided package identifier and a DHL-generated package identifier, plus a tracking identifier. For international shipments, the last-mile tracking ID is available only after the shipment has been shipped. Your system therefore cannot assume that a tracking number exists at the moment a label is created.

ShipStation API

ShipStation documents PDF, PNG, and ZPL output. Its layouts include 4×6 (four by six inches) and US Letter. PDF output supports 0, 90, 180, and 270 degree rotation, while ZPL rotation options differ, so do not assume one rotation setting carries over between formats.

ShipStation offers two delivery modes. You can receive a download URL, or you can receive the label inline in the response. The documentation states that download URLs remain valid for 90 days and recommends storing label images locally if you need access after that window. If your workflow needs only one known format, the inline response avoids a separate HTTP download request.

DHL Freight Print API

The DHL Freight Print API documents PDF, ZPL, ZPL300, and ZPL600 outputs. The ZPL variants are identified for 203, 300, and 600 DPI label printers. The documented preconditions are narrow. The service is available to existing DHL Freight business customers with a valid contract, for palletized road freight shipments over 35 kg across Europe. It is not a general parcel-label endpoint, and you should not generalize its availability to other carriers, shipment types, or geographies.

PDFKit for local generation

PDFKit is a Node.js library. Its getting-started documentation shows a PDFDocument that behaves as a readable stream. You pipe it to a file or to an HTTP response, then call end() to finalize the document. The document does not save itself automatically. The browser build of the library handles file-system access and font registration differently from the Node.js build, so code that works on a server may need changes if it runs in a browser context.

Local rendering keeps the entire path inside your process. That is an architectural property, not evidence that it is faster, cheaper, or easier to scale. Your throughput depends on your own compute, your font files, and your concurrency settings.

Decision axes that matter at production scale

Use these axes to compare options against your own requirements. Each one needs a measured answer from your environment, not a vendor claim.

Carrier and format fit

Start with the carriers you actually ship with. A hosted API can only produce labels for the carriers it integrates with, in the geographies it covers. Then check formats: if your printers accept ZPL, a printer-language output can skip a rasterization step on your side; if you print on standard office printers, PDF at the correct page size is usually simpler. Confirm whether each request maps to one label or can cover a batch, because that determines how you size your request queue.

Latency and throughput

Measure median and tail latency, not averages. A label that takes 200 milliseconds in a quiet test can take several seconds during a peak sort window if a carrier API throttles you or if your own rendering workers are saturated. Test with representative documents and with the concurrency you expect at peak. No reviewed documentation provides comparative latency or throughput numbers for hosted APIs against local rendering, so you must produce those numbers yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failure handling

Each option fails differently. A hosted API adds network reachability, provider availability, quotas, and throttling to your failure surface. A local library adds your own runtime, memory limits, and font dependencies. In both cases, a failed render or label creation must not leave an orphaned shipment in your system or create a duplicate label on retry.

Operational ownership

Local rendering means you own font files, the library version, the Node.js runtime, and any container image that bundles them. A hosted option means you own API credentials, version changes announced by the provider, and the integration code. Neither option is free to operate. Decide which set of responsibilities your team can maintain for years.

Output delivery and retention

Inline responses reduce round trips but require you to store the bytes yourself. URL delivery gives you a fetch step, a time limit, and a retention decision. The ShipStation 90-day window is a specific documented behavior of that platform; do not treat it as an industry norm. Decide your own archival requirement, such as how long you must be able to reprint or prove what was shipped, and build storage to match.

Correctness and physical output

A label can be generated successfully and still fail at the dock. Check barcode readability, page dimensions, scaling, orientation, font embedding, and the final print result on the printer you will use. The documentation for these formats describes what each option can produce, but it does not certify a universal test plan for your printers. Build one from representative labels.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Total cost

Total cost includes implementation and maintenance, compute, storage, support, network overhead, retry traffic, and any provider charges. No reviewed price comparison or current per-label price exists in the documentation for these options, so build your model from your own volumes and quotes from the provider you are considering.

Production practices for either choice

Keep label creation state explicit

Store the carrier or provider identifiers and the resulting label bytes or a durable location, according to your retention needs. Because DHL’s create request produces one label and returns identifiers, and because ShipStation URLs expire, your data model should record the label state separately from the shipment itself. A shipment can exist before its tracking number is assigned.

Make retries safe

AWS guidance for serverless workflows recommends idempotent handling and graceful treatment of duplicate events. Apply an idempotency key or an equivalent deduplication strategy around shipment and label creation, so that a timed-out request retried by your worker does not create a second label. Retry throttled calls with backoff and jitter rather than immediate retries. The AWS recommendations come from serverless architecture guidance; adapt them to your own environment rather than treating them as a benchmark for hosted labels.

Load test the whole path

  1. Build a test set of real shipments that covers every carrier, service level, and label format you use.
  2. Run the full path at peak concurrency: request creation, label creation or rendering, storage, and delivery to the printer queue.
  3. Set timeouts from measured values, then load test those timeouts so you know how the system behaves when a dependency slows down.
  4. Find the downstream throughput limit, meaning the API rate limit, the database write rate, or the printer queue. Measure the bottleneck rather than assuming local rendering removes it.
  5. Repeat the test after any change to fonts, library versions, or label templates.

Validate the printed label

  1. Print each label format on the production printer driver and paper stock.
  2. Confirm the physical size matches the expected 4×6 or other layout and that scaling is not applied by the driver.
  3. Scan barcodes at the dock or with a scanner that matches your carrier’s requirements.
  4. Confirm the carrier accepts the label before you commit to a volume plan.

A decision framework

  • Choose a hosted carrier label API when the carrier must issue the label, when you need carrier-native tracking data, or when the carrier’s output format matches your printers without custom work.
  • Choose a local PDF library when you produce documents the carrier does not issue, when you need full layout control, or when you can staff the rendering environment and its font dependencies.
  • Use both when your workflow mixes carrier labels with internal documents, and route each through the path that produces it most reliably.
  • Do not pick either option on documentation alone. Pick it on a load test that matches your peak volume and printer fleet.

Where the evidence stops

The available documentation establishes what each option can produce and which operational concerns you must design for. It does not establish comparative load-test results, service-level guarantees, prices, complete carrier coverage, or security and compliance terms. Your language and runtime, shipment volume, carrier and geography mix, and printer fleet are specific to your system. Treat this framework as a set of questions to answer with your own measurements.
