Buy a professionally cut stainless-steel stencil when fine-pitch parts, exposed thermal pads, repeat builds, or the cost of a failed assembly make consistent paste deposits more important than saving the order cost.
Choose based on board geometry, repeat count, and the cost of failure
The decision is not simply whether a homemade stencil can be cut. It is whether its aperture edges, registration, and paste release will be reliable enough for your board and build. A film stencil can be a practical prototype tool; a professionally made steel stencil is generally the stronger choice when small features or repeated use demand consistency.

- Make one: one-off or small-run boards with larger pads, existing craft or vinyl-cutting equipment, and time for test cuts.
- Buy one: fine-pitch parts, exposed thermal pads, multiple boards or repeat builds, or assemblies where rework and failed deposits are costly.
JLCPCB’s 2026 guide describes DIY Kapton, Mylar, or vinyl stencils as workable for larger SMD components and low-volume prototyping, while noting that hand-applying paste pad by pad can be messy, slow, and inconsistent: JLCPCB’s DIY stencil guide.

Large, forgiving pads and few boards
DIY is most attractive when the pads are big enough that small aperture imperfections are unlikely to dominate paste transfer, and you need only a few prints. JLCPCB cites about 0.5 mm pitch as a practical DIY boundary. Treat that as guidance, not a guaranteed cutoff: the exact footprint, aperture shape, stencil material, and assembly process matter.

You already own suitable tools
A craft knife, craft cutter, vinyl cutter, or appropriately configured laser may make a homemade stencil economical if it is already available. JLCPCB estimates under $10 USD for a craft-knife approach when tools are already owned; that is not a complete cost quote and excludes labor, failed cuts, and the purchase of equipment.
You can test and tune
Expect to check scaling and material on scrap before making the final stencil. DIY laser settings vary with the material, laser, wattage, focus, ventilation, and setup. Test cuts are especially important because film may melt, curl, or char if processed with unsuitable equipment or settings.

When buying a laser-cut steel stencil is worth it
Fine-pitch components or small apertures
QFNs, QFPs, BGAs, and small passives can make aperture quality and paste release more demanding. JLCPCB warns that finer features can expose the limits of DIY stencils; if your layout is around or below its cited 0.5 mm practical boundary, assess the actual pads and process rather than assuming a film stencil will work.
Exposed thermal pads
A thermal pad often needs a deliberate paste pattern, such as a window-pane arrangement, rather than one large opening. If the deposit needs controlled segmentation or precise alignment, a professionally cut stencil is easier to justify.

Repeated builds or several boards
Repeated DIY setup and tuning consume time, while a stable stencil can be reused. Eurocircuits says its stainless-steel stencils can print multiple boards without losing accuracy; this is the supplier’s statement in its stencil manufacturing guide, not an independent comparative test. JLCPCB’s guide gives indicative reuse estimates of about 5–10 prints for Mylar/PET and 20–30 for Kapton/polyimide; handling and cleaning affect actual life.
Rework would cost more than the stencil
Compare the order cost with the time spent tuning a homemade stencil and the consequences of poor deposits, bridges, opens, or rework. A professional stencil may be the cheaper option in total when a failed assembly is expensive, even if the DIY material cost is low.

Choose thickness and material for the smallest pads
Thickness controls paste volume: Eurocircuits states that thicker stencils print more paste. JLCPCB advises choosing stock with the smallest pad in mind—thinner material for smaller pads, thicker material where larger pads need more paste. The right choice also depends on the assembly and aperture design, so ask the supplier to review dense or mixed-size footprints when needed.
Best Value
- FOUR PITCHES: Universal BGA reballing stencil has three types of holes with 0.3 0.35 0.4 0.5 pitch, four kinds of spacing and multiple sizes.
- POSITIONING: Tin mesh solder template is precisely positioned for fast tin implantation, and the ball template will not change under high temperature.
- COMPACT APPEARANCE: Universal BGA reballing stencil has a compact appearance and is easy to carry around and use.
- VERSATILE: BGA reballing stencil is versatile and suitable for the common IC used in cell phones today, which can meet your various needs.
- STAINLESS STEEL MATERIAL: Tin mesh solder template is made of premium stainless steel material, which is not easily damaged and has a long service life.
- Kapton/polyimide: heat-resistant film; JLCPCB estimates about 20–30 prints. Unsuitable laser processing can char it.
- Mylar/PET: low-cost prototype stock; JLCPCB estimates about 5–10 prints. Unsuitable processing or solvent can cause melting, curling, or clouding.
- Blade-safe vinyl: useful for quick one-offs, but flexible and prone to distortion. Do not laser-cut PVC.
- Vellum: inexpensive for tests, but less durable and more likely to lose edge definition.
- Stainless steel: the professional option for fine features and repeated builds; use an appropriate supplier or suitable metal-cutting setup. A typical hobby laser is not automatically suitable for metal stencil cutting.
JLCPCB gives 0.10–0.15 mm (4–6 mil) as a general DIY sheet-stock range. Eurocircuits describes 70, 100, and 130 micron stainless options on its eC-stencil service page. These figures describe different source-specific offerings; they are not a universal thickness recommendation.
Prepare the right paste-layer file before ordering or cutting
- Export the solder-paste layer, not copper or solder mask. JLCPCB’s guide identifies KiCad’s F.Paste or B.Paste layer and the corresponding top or bottom paste layers in other common EDA tools.
- Check the file at 1:1 scale. Confirm the apertures match the intended pads and that the board outline or registration marks are retained as needed.
- Confirm format and manufacturing details with the supplier. Eurocircuits describes CAM preparation before cutting and lists custom or registration-compatible stainless-steel stencils in 100 or 130 micron stock.
- Ask about dense or mixed-size components. Confirm whether thickness or aperture changes are appropriate for the paste volumes your board needs.
- For double-sided assembly, plan both patterns. Prepare separate top and bottom paste patterns, and confirm how the supplier handles both sides and whether the bottom-side paste volume needs adjustment.
Supplier specifications vary. Union Circuits lists ±0.005 mm cutting accuracy and 24-hour prototype turnaround on its laser-cut stencil page; these are Union Circuits’ stated specifications, not general performance guarantees. Confirm current details, file requirements, price, and delivery for your location before ordering.
Quick Recap
A practical decision checklist
- What are the smallest pitch and pad dimensions? Are there fine-pitch parts or an exposed thermal pad?
- How many boards will you print now, and are repeat builds likely?
- What paste volume do the smallest and largest pads need, and what thickness suits the whole board?
- How much aperture quality, registration, and release consistency does the assembly require?
- Do you already own suitable tools and stock, or would you need to buy equipment?
- Can you accommodate test cuts, tuning, and potential rework?
- What are the custom order cost, shipping, and delivery time for your region?
