A portable power bank is worth carrying when your devices may run low before you can reach an outlet, or when you rely on them during a long day away from reliable charging. If your trip is short, your use is light and outlets are dependable, it may add bulk without much benefit. There is no universal trip length or capacity that makes a power bank worthwhile: weigh your expected device use, time away from outlets, devices to charge, and the bank’s size and watt-hour rating.
When does a power bank make sense for a trip?
Start with the day you expect to have, not a generic capacity recommendation. A phone used for navigation, tickets, messages, photos or work may need more frequent charging than one used occasionally. The case for a backup is stronger if you will be away from outlets for hours, travel through places where charging access is uncertain, or need more than one portable device available.

A power bank is less compelling for a short outing with light device use and dependable access to charging. Consider whether you will actually need backup power, what devices it must support, and whether its weight and space in your bag are worth carrying. Available aviation guidance establishes battery rules, not a universally ideal capacity or a tested break-even point for travelers.
What should you check before taking one on a flight?
Carry it in the cabin, not checked baggage
The FAA classifies power banks and portable chargers as spare lithium-ion batteries. Its passenger guidance says they must be carried in cabin baggage, not checked baggage. If your cabin bag is gate-checked, remove the power bank and keep it with you. IATA’s traveler guidance likewise tells passengers to keep lithium-powered devices and spare batteries in hand baggage. Check the watt-hour (Wh) rating and airline rules
Find the power bank’s Wh rating on its label or specifications. FAA guidance says spare lithium-ion batteries up to 100 Wh are within the ordinary passenger allowance. For spare batteries from 101 to 160 Wh, FAA guidance provides an airline-approval path and a limit of two. The FAA notes that airlines may set stricter quantity and Wh limits; its passenger page was last updated October 2, 2026. FAA Airline Passengers and Batteries.
Do not treat the FAA approval path as a universal allowance for power banks above 100 Wh. IATA’s passenger document dated March 31, 2026 says passengers are limited to two power banks not exceeding 100 Wh, and its table lists power banks over 100 Wh as forbidden. Because the published FAA and IATA guidance differs on this point, check the rules of your operating airline and the requirements for your route before travelling with a bank above 100 Wh. Convert mAh to Wh if needed
A milliamp-hour (mAh) figure alone is not enough to compare batteries when their voltages differ. Convert the capacity to amp-hours (Ah) by dividing mAh by 1,000, then multiply Ah by voltage: Wh = (mAh ÷ 1,000) × V. For example, the FAA gives a 12-volt battery rated at 8 Ah: 12 × 8 = 96 Wh. Use the bank’s stated voltage, not an assumed voltage, when calculating. FAA watt-hour calculation guidance.

Follow current limits on power banks in flight
ICAO announced on March 27, 2026 that passengers would be limited to two power banks and prohibited from recharging them during flights: “Following the improvements agreed today, these devices will now be limited to two per passenger, and passengers will be prohibited from recharging them during flights.” IATA’s 2026 passenger document also says not to recharge power banks from aircraft power, and airlines may impose stricter conditions. How can you travel with a power bank safely?
- Do not bring a damaged or recalled battery that is likely to spark or generate dangerous heat unless it has been made safe, as the FAA advises.
- Protect exposed terminals on loose batteries against short circuits.
- Tell crew or airport staff if a battery is hot, smoking or damaged. FAA battery guidance; IATA traveler battery-safety guidance.
What to consider when choosing a travel power bank
Choose for the devices and travel day you have in mind rather than chasing a capacity that sounds universally best. Check that the bank supports the devices you intend to charge, then weigh its size and stated Wh rating against your airline and route’s rules. If the Wh rating is not printed directly, use the voltage and mAh calculation above; do not rely on mAh alone when comparing banks with different voltages.
For flights, a bank rated at or below 100 Wh avoids the specific above-100-Wh disagreement in the cited FAA and IATA guidance, though airline limits can still be stricter. Confirm current requirements with the operating carrier, particularly if your itinerary involves multiple airlines or routes.
