Gaming is a healthy hobby for most people. It can provide enjoyment, learning, distraction, or connection, and some appropriately designed games have been studied for mental-health or therapeutic uses. The important question is not a universal number of hours. It is whether gaming remains voluntary and fits alongside sleep, physical health, relationships, school, work, and other responsibilities. When play repeatedly causes distress, feels hard to control, or displaces important parts of life, consider talking with a qualified health professional.
Gaming can be compatible with good mental health
The World Health Organization (WHO) describes video gaming as a healthy hobby for most users. A significant problem affects a minority, and concern is defined by its effects: marked distress or impairment in personal, family, social, educational, occupational, or other important areas of functioning. Enjoying games frequently, caring deeply about a game, or spending a long session on occasion does not by itself establish a disorder.

What possible benefits are supported
The American Psychological Association (APA) says appropriately designed games may have educational value, and some may offer mental-health benefits or be used during therapy. The 2022 Mind Gaming report from the Mental Health Foundation says casual gaming may be linked to improvements in symptoms of anxiety and low mood. That report also stresses that the relationship is complex: poorer wellbeing may increase the risk of problematic play, so an association is not proof that gaming caused an improvement.
Recommended Free Tools
In practical terms, a game may be a pleasant leisure activity, a short-term source of distraction, or one way to spend time with other people. Those experiences can coexist with healthy routines when the player can choose to stop and continue meeting everyday commitments. They should not be treated as evidence that games prevent, diagnose, or cure a mental-health condition.

When gaming starts to become a problem
WHO and APA descriptions point to a pattern rather than a single session or preference. Potentially concerning features include impaired control over gaming, giving it increasing priority over other activities, and continuing or escalating play despite negative consequences. These features are reasons to look more closely and perhaps seek advice, not a self-diagnosis checklist.
| Healthy pattern to look for | Pattern worth discussing with a professional |
|---|---|
| You can decide when to start and stop, even if stopping is sometimes disappointing. | You repeatedly intend to stop or cut back but cannot, or feel unable to control the timing and duration. |
| Gaming fits around sleep, meals, movement, hygiene, relationships, school, work, and appointments. | Gaming regularly displaces sleep, self-care, physical activity, responsibilities, or time with people who matter to you. |
| Play is enjoyable or relaxing overall. | Play is accompanied by significant distress, conflict, worsening mood, or other negative consequences, yet continues. |
| Your routine and functioning remain broadly stable. | Sleep, physical or psychological health, social functioning, school, or work is worsening in connection with your gaming pattern. |
| You retain other interests and can take breaks. | Gaming becomes the clear priority over most other interests, or attempts to take a break repeatedly fail. |
A difficult week, a new release, or an occasional all-night session is different from a persistent pattern. The concern rises when the effects recur, spread to several areas of life, or continue despite your efforts to change them.
How much gaming is too much?
There is no single evidence-backed number of hours that determines whether someone needs help. The WHO guidance emphasizes whether gaming excludes daily activities and whether health or functioning changes. Two people can play for the same amount of time and have very different outcomes depending on sleep, obligations, physical activity, relationships, and their ability to stop.

- Are you sleeping enough for your age and circumstances, or postponing sleep to continue playing?
- Are meals, movement, hygiene, medical care, or prescribed treatment being skipped?
- Are school, work, caregiving, finances, or household tasks being missed?
- Are relationships becoming strained because of arguments, withdrawal, or broken commitments?
- Can you end a session when you planned to, including when a game is competitive or designed to encourage continued play?
- Do you feel better overall after playing, or increasingly distressed, isolated, or out of control?
Keeping a short, nonjudgmental record for one or two weeks can make the pattern clearer. Note when you play, when you planned to stop, whether you stopped, what was postponed, and how sleep, mood, and responsibilities were affected. The purpose is to identify effects and choices, not to impose an arbitrary limit.
Health effects to watch for
WHO lists several health concerns associated with gaming behaviour: sleep deprivation, insufficient physical activity, an unhealthy diet, eyesight or hearing problems, and musculoskeletal problems. These are possible concerns associated with particular patterns of play, not inevitable outcomes for every player.
Sleep and daily rhythm
Late sessions, stimulating competition, or postponing bedtime can reduce sleep. Look for a repeated cycle of going to bed later than intended, difficulty waking, daytime fatigue, or relying on gaming to manage an irregular schedule. Sleep loss can then make concentration, mood, and self-control harder the next day.
Movement, food, and physical discomfort
Long sedentary periods may crowd out physical activity. Meals may become irregular or rely heavily on less nutritious options. Holding a controller, keyboard, or phone in one position for extended periods can contribute to aches or other musculoskeletal complaints. Eye strain, headaches, or hearing symptoms are reasons to review screen distance, breaks, volume, and ergonomics and to seek clinical advice when symptoms persist.

Social and psychological functioning
Pay attention to withdrawal from friends or family, escalating conflict, loss of interest in previously important activities, or a worsening psychological state that tracks with gaming. A game may be a coping tool for distress, but if it becomes the only coping tool or leaves problems unaddressed, additional support can help.
Can video games help with anxiety or low mood?
Some people report feeling calmer, more engaged, or temporarily distracted while playing, and the Mental Health Foundation’s 2022 report found that casual gaming may be associated with improvements in anxiety and low-mood symptoms. However, the same report says the relationship is complex and that poorer wellbeing may also increase the risk of problematic play. That means gaming and wellbeing can influence each other; the finding does not show that ordinary gaming treats anxiety or depression.
Use your own response as a practical check. If a moderate session leaves you refreshed and you return to sleep, responsibilities, and relationships, it may be functioning as recreation. If you need increasingly long sessions to escape feelings, feel worse when you stop, or avoid necessary help, discuss the underlying distress with a qualified professional rather than trying to solve it with more play.

“Video games can be used in health care, and they are already used in some official treatment programmes. They can either inform and teach patients how to live with their medical condition or help to distract them.”
He immediately added an essential limitation:
“But from what is known today, games could work only as part of a broad approach based on more traditional interventions. In other words, games will not replace people in the health sector.”
A game used within a clinician-led program is therefore different from buying a game and treating yourself. Ask the treating professional what the game is intended to do, what evidence supports that specific program, how progress will be assessed, and what other care is included.
When should you get extra support?
Consider contacting a qualified health professional when gaming is repeatedly associated with significant distress, loss of control, or disruption in important areas of life. Useful triggers include:
Best Value
- repeatedly missing school, work, caregiving, appointments, or essential tasks;
- persistent sleep loss, physical symptoms, or deteriorating health;
- serious conflict or withdrawal affecting family, friends, or partners;
- inability to cut back despite clear negative consequences;
- gaming becoming more important than nearly all other interests; or
- anxiety, low mood, irritability, or other distress that is worsening or not resolving.
You do not need to wait until every sign appears. A primary-care clinician, mental-health professional, school or university counselor, or another qualified local service can help assess the whole situation, including sleep, mood, substance use, physical health, and stressors. They can suggest practical changes or treatment for any underlying condition without assuming that enthusiasm for games is itself an illness.
How to prepare for a helpful conversation
- Describe effects, not labels. Say what has changed: bedtime, attendance, grades, work performance, eating, movement, relationships, mood, or physical symptoms.
- Bring a recent pattern. A brief log of sessions, intended stopping times, missed activities, and next-day effects is more useful than a guess about a weekly average.
- Explain what you have tried. Mention alarms, planned breaks, device settings, schedule changes, or support from family and friends, and whether they worked.
- Ask for a broad assessment. A clinician can consider anxiety, depression, attention difficulties, sleep problems, pain, stress, or other factors that may be affecting both gaming and wellbeing.
- Agree on a measurable next step. This might be protecting a consistent bedtime, attending an appointment, restoring meals and movement, or setting a review date rather than pursuing an arbitrary hour target.
If you are supporting someone else, focus on observable effects and concern rather than shame or moral judgments. Ask what gaming does for them, listen for stress or isolation, and offer help with routines and professional contact. Coercive restrictions can escalate conflict; safety, functioning, and collaboration matter more than winning an argument about games.
What is known about prevalence—and what is not
WHO’s overview reports estimates for “problem gaming,” used as a proxy for gaming-disorder prevalence, ranging from 1.3% to 9.9% across populations. WHO notes that estimates vary considerably, partly because standardized assessment instruments are lacking. This is not a single global rate and cannot be used to calculate an individual’s risk.

The Mental Health Foundation report was published in 2022 and is not a current clinical guideline. WHO/Europe’s discussion of treatment uses was published in 2021 and illustrates possible roles and limitations rather than proving that a particular game works for a particular condition. APA’s 2024 feature is a synthesis and reported feature; its descriptions of impaired control, increased priority, and persistence despite harm should be read as guidance for recognizing concern, not as a diagnostic test.
Get urgent help for immediate danger
If you or someone else is in immediate danger, has thoughts of self-harm, or cannot stay safe, contact local emergency services or a crisis service in your country now. If possible, stay with the person, remove immediate means of harm, and involve a trusted adult or other support person. Gaming concerns should never delay urgent care for a safety crisis.
A practical decision rule
Keep gaming as recreation when it remains enjoyable, voluntary, and compatible with sleep, health, relationships, school, work, and other priorities. Pause and reassess when it repeatedly displaces those priorities or produces distress. Seek professional support when loss of control, harm, or impairment is significant or persistent. That approach reflects what WHO and APA emphasize: the impact on a person’s life matters more than a universal hour count.
