How to evaluate semiconductor stocks using revenue, margins, and inventory trends

Learn how to evaluate semiconductor stocks by reading revenue, gross margin, and inventory trends together, with filing-based examples and a step-by-step comparison framework.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The reliable way to evaluate a semiconductor stock is to read revenue, gross margin, and inventory as one operating story across several reporting periods. Start with year-over-year and sequential revenue, then identify which products and end markets supplied the change. Reconcile gross-margin movement to mix, utilization, yields, pricing, capacity costs, and unusual charges. Finally, compare inventory dollars and inventory days with sales, shipments, production plans, and customer-order trends.

No single ratio produces a buy or sell decision. An inventory build can support a new-product launch, while a nearly unchanged inventory balance can still represent worsening inventory days when sales fall. The objective is to determine whether demand, manufacturing economics, and working capital are improving together—and then combine that operating view with valuation, balance-sheet, competitive, and risk analysis.

What the three indicators reveal

Revenue shows what customers bought and when shipments were recognized. Gross margin shows how much of that revenue remained after manufacturing or product costs. Inventory shows resources committed to future shipments and the risk that those resources will not sell at the expected price. Each measure is incomplete on its own:

  • Fast revenue growth may come from one customer, a temporary shipment spike, price increases, or a low-margin product mix.
  • A higher gross margin may reflect favorable mix or utilization rather than durable pricing power; a lower margin may include a one-time inventory charge.
  • Higher inventory may be deliberate preparation for a product ramp, or it may be stock that customers have deferred or cancelled.

Read at least several quarters and, where available, full-year periods. Use the issuer’s segment and end-market disclosures to explain the movement before drawing an investment conclusion.

Step 1: Put revenue growth in context

Compare both year-over-year and sequential changes

Year-over-year growth controls for seasonality; sequential growth shows the current direction and the speed of change. A single quarter can be distorted by shipment timing, qualification milestones, or a customer’s inventory cycle. Build a period-by-period table containing total revenue, each disclosed segment, and the relevant end markets. Mark whether each change is reported, currency-related, price-driven, volume-driven, or attributed to mix.

Revenue question What to examine Why it matters
How fast? Year-over-year and sequential growth over multiple periods Separates a durable trend from a one-quarter event
Where from? Segment, product, geography, and end-market contribution Reveals concentration and whether growth is broad or narrow
Why now? Shipment timing, pricing, unit volume, customer inventory, and product launches Explains whether reported revenue can persist
Against what? Industry growth and the company’s own prior cycle Provides context without treating the industry rate as a forecast

Use industry data as a backdrop, not a verdict

The World Semiconductor Trade Statistics release dated March 6, 2026 reports global semiconductor sales of USD 795.6 billion in 2025, up 26.2% year over year, including fourth-quarter 2025 revenue of USD 238.9 billion, up 38.4% year over year. Those figures incorporate finalized fourth-quarter data and describe the industry aggregate, not any particular company’s demand or future stock return. Compare a company’s growth with that backdrop, then ask whether it gained or lost share and which markets explain the difference. WSTS, Global Semiconductor Market grows 26% in 2025 to $796 billion

Test the quality of growth

  • Mix: Is growth concentrated in one accelerator, memory product, handset, automotive customer, or other end market?
  • Timing: Did the company pull shipments forward, or are customers taking products on their normal schedule?
  • Pricing versus volume: Revenue can rise while units fall if prices increase; the reverse can also occur.
  • Customer concentration: A large order from one customer can make reported growth look stronger than the underlying base.
  • Demand evidence: Check bookings, backlog where disclosed, distributor inventory, and management’s explanation for cancellations or deferrals.

Do not assume that industry growth guarantees company growth. A company can underperform a growing market because of execution, product transitions, capacity constraints, or lost share.

Step 2: Read gross margin as an operating bridge

Start with the definition, then find the drivers

Gross margin is gross profit divided by revenue. The percentage is useful only when paired with the change in gross profit and the company’s explanation. Ask management to bridge the movement from the prior period: product mix, average selling prices, manufacturing utilization, wafer or assembly yields, material and logistics costs, competitive pricing, unabsorbed capacity charges, and inventory write-downs can all matter.

Possible driver Typical effect Diagnostic question
Product or end-market mix Higher- or lower-margin products change the blended rate Did the revenue mix shift, and is the shift expected to persist?
Utilization and fixed-cost absorption Lower output spreads fixed costs over fewer units Are fabs or plants running below normal levels?
Yield and manufacturing execution More good units lower cost per sellable unit Is the change tied to a ramp or process maturity?
Pricing and competition Price pressure reduces margin; scarcity can lift it Are prices changing across the portfolio or only in one product?
Inventory charges Write-downs reduce gross profit, often temporarily What triggered the charge, and can the stock be sold without another charge?

Separate recurring economics from one-time charges

A margin improvement caused by sustainable mix or better yields is different from one caused by a one-off comparison against a prior charge. Conversely, a temporary charge can hide healthy underlying pricing. Read the footnotes and reconcile the reported rate to adjusted measures without ignoring the charge: cash has still been tied up, and the event may reveal a demand or execution problem.

AMD’s fiscal 2025 filing illustrates the required level of attribution. AMD reported a 50% gross margin in 2025 versus 49% in 2024, saying the increase was primarily due to product mix and partly offset by approximately USD 440 million of net inventory and related charges associated with U.S. government export controls on MI308 products. The same filing described a USD 1.5 billion inventory increase driven primarily by builds for new-product ramps. The headline margin increase therefore cannot be interpreted without both the mix and charge explanations. AMD FY2025 Form 10-K

Account for business-model differences

Foundries, integrated device manufacturers, fabless designers, memory producers, and analog suppliers carry different fixed-cost structures, outsourcing arrangements, and product lives. A foundry’s margin is exposed to fab utilization and capacity commitments; a fabless designer’s margin is more affected by foundry pricing, packaging, product mix, and charges from its supply chain. There is no universal “good” gross-margin percentage that applies across these models.

Step 3: Interpret inventory dollars and inventory days together

What each measure tells you

Inventory dollars show the amount invested in raw materials, work in process, and finished goods. Inventory days relate that balance to the company’s sales or cost flow and are therefore sensitive to the denominator. Days can rise because inventory increased, because sales fell, or both. Always display the dollar balance, the reported days, and the corresponding revenue or cost measure for the same period.

  • [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by

Microchip Technology reported inventory of USD 1.29 billion and 251 days at March 31, 2025, versus USD 1.32 billion and 224 days at March 31, 2024. The company said the dollars were generally flat while days increased significantly because net sales were lower. This is why a stable balance is not automatically benign. Microchip Technology FY2025 Form 10-K

Classify the reason for a build

  • Planned ramp: Materials and finished goods are built ahead of a newly launched product or a customer qualification. Confirm launch timing, expected sell-through, and whether production is being reduced as demand becomes visible.
  • Supply protection: A company may secure scarce wafers, substrates, or components. Check the cost, cancellation rights, and whether demand is firm enough to consume the commitment.
  • Demand shortfall: Orders are delayed or cancelled after production. This creates excess stock, price concessions, and write-down risk.
  • Longer cycle: A cyclical downturn lowers shipments while stock takes longer to clear. Falling days should follow when production is cut and sell-through improves.

Microchip’s FY2026 annual report states: “Because we built inventories in response to customer demand, the cancellation or deferral of product orders resulted in excess inventory, which then resulted in write-downs of inventory and an adverse effect on our gross margins in fiscal 2025 and fiscal 2026.” This is a direct example of how an initial demand response can become a margin problem. Microchip Technology 2026 Annual Report

Check channel and return exposure

Inventory held by distributors may not appear on the manufacturer’s balance sheet, yet it can delay new orders. Read disclosures about distributor inventory, return rights, price protection, and revenue recognition. A company that can accept returns or provide price adjustments may face an estimate change even after a product has shipped. An issuer’s 2026 annual-report disclosure explains why channel inventory and related rights affect reported results. 2026 annual-report excerpt on distributor inventory and recognition

Revenue Gross margin Inventory Initial interpretation to test
Up Up Stable or declining Healthy demand and operating leverage are possible; verify mix and whether shipments are sustainable.
Up Down Up Growth may be low-margin, capacity-constrained, launch-heavy, or accompanied by future write-down risk.
Down Down Up Most concerning combination; investigate cancellations, utilization, pricing, and excess stock immediately.
Down Stable Stable The company may be controlling production; determine whether demand is temporarily weak or structurally impaired.
Up Up Up Could be a successful ramp with deliberate stock-building; confirm sell-through and production plans.

The matrix is a prompt for investigation, not a mechanical rating. For example, a launch can legitimately produce rising revenue, margin volatility, and higher inventory at the same time. Conversely, falling revenue can raise inventory days even when dollars are nearly unchanged.

How to compare semiconductor companies

Compare like with like: the same periods, accounting definitions, business model, and cycle stage. Record the following for every company:

  1. Revenue growth by quarter and year, plus segment and end-market mix.
  2. Gross-margin level and trend, with the issuer’s bridge for mix, utilization, yields, pricing, capacity costs, and unusual charges.
  3. Inventory dollars and reported days, alongside revenue, shipments, production, and order commentary.
  4. Capacity commitments and utilization sensitivity, especially for businesses carrying substantial fixed manufacturing costs.
  5. Product-cycle exposure, pricing pressure, technology transitions, and customer or distributor concentration.

Do not rank companies by a single percentage. TSMC’s foundry economics and diversified capacity base are not an interchangeable target for every fabless designer or integrated device maker. TSMC’s 2025 annual report lists consolidated revenue of NT$3,809.05 billion, up 31.6%; gross margin was 59.9% versus 56.1% in 2024, operating margin 50.8% versus 45.7%, and net margin 45.1% versus 40.5%. These are issuer-specific results, not an industry-wide margin floor. TSMC 2025 Annual Report

A repeatable filing-review process

Build the data sheet

Use the income statement, balance sheet, business-review section, inventory footnote, and risk factors from each latest filing. Keep reported and adjusted figures in separate columns. Add prior-year and prior-quarter values, and note the date, currency, fiscal year-end, and whether a figure is a one-time charge.

Write the operating bridge

For each change, complete the sentence: “Revenue changed because …; gross margin changed because …; inventory changed because ….” If management does not provide a reason, label the cause as unresolved rather than filling the gap with a guess. Then test the explanation against shipments, production, customer commentary, and subsequent-period inventory.

Stress-test the explanation

  • If growth depends on one product, what happens when its cycle matures?
  • If margin depends on utilization, how much capacity is committed if demand weakens?
  • If inventory is for a ramp, what evidence shows customers are accepting the product?
  • If inventory days rose, did the denominator fall, the numerator rise, or both?
  • If a write-down was called nonrecurring, could the same demand or export-control condition recur?

Only then move to valuation

Revenue, margin, and inventory describe operations; they do not establish that a stock is cheap or expensive. Add balance-sheet strength, cash conversion, capital-expenditure needs, competitive position, technology road maps, customer concentration, export restrictions, and a valuation based on plausible future earnings or cash flow. A strong operating quarter can already be reflected in the share price, while a weak quarter can contain a temporary charge that creates opportunity—or reveal a lasting loss of demand.

Common interpretation errors

  • Using one quarter as a trend: Semiconductor shipments are cyclical and timing-sensitive. Require confirmation across periods.
  • Treating inventory growth as automatically negative: A documented product ramp can justify a build; verify demand and eventual sell-through.
  • Treating inventory days as a physical count: Days are sales-sensitive and can rise when sales fall with little dollar change.
  • Calling every margin change pricing power: Mix, utilization, yields, capacity absorption, and write-downs can dominate price effects.
  • Applying a universal threshold: The available disclosures do not establish an industry-wide healthy inventory-days number or gross-margin floor.
  • Ignoring channel stock: Distributor inventory, returns, and price-protection rights can delay orders or alter revenue and margin estimates.
  • Turning operating evidence into a stock recommendation: The framework is analytical, not a prediction of returns.

Bottom line for an investor’s worksheet

For every reporting period, place revenue growth, gross margin, inventory dollars, inventory days, and management’s stated causes on one page. Look for a coherent sequence: demand produces shipments, shipments convert inventory into cash, and manufacturing economics protect margin. When the sequence breaks, investigate the precise break—mix, utilization, yield, pricing, capacity, customer deferrals, or a write-down—before deciding what the stock is worth. The latest filing should always supersede older examples and figures.
