When Does an ADAS Camera Need Recalibration After Windshield Replacement?

Whether an ADAS camera needs recalibration after windshield replacement depends on the exact vehicle and its current OEM procedure. Learn what to verify with the installer.

An ADAS camera needs recalibration after windshield replacement when the current procedure for that vehicle requires it—especially if the camera was removed, reinstalled, or its position or view may have changed. There is no safe universal rule for every make and model: have the shop check the latest service information for your exact vehicle and complete any required calibration before handing it back.

How to tell whether your vehicle needs recalibration

Check the OEM service procedure for the exact year, make, model, camera system, and work performed. The replacement itself triggers calibration on some vehicles; others have different requirements. A warning light—or the absence of one—is not a substitute for checking the procedure.

I-CAR’s OEM Calibration Requirements Search can help identify calibration-triggering events and scan-tool or special-tool needs for covered vehicles. Its referenced information covers model years 2016–2024, but I-CAR says the lookup does not provide the calibration procedure or replace OEM service information. The repairer should consult the current instructions for your vehicle.

Example: Subaru EyeSight

Subaru Service Bulletin 12-192-15R, revised November 19, 2015, applies to specified EyeSight vehicles. It directs technicians to remove the camera assembly before removing the windshield, reinstall it after replacement, then perform the camera inspection and adjustment and the automatic-adjustment procedure in the applicable service manual. This is a model-specific example, not a rule for every vehicle. The bulletin is available through NHTSA’s technical service bulletin repository; current applicable service information should govern the repair.

When calibration belongs in the repair process

If the OEM procedure calls for calibration, it is part of completing the windshield repair—not an optional follow-up based on whether a dashboard warning appears. On the Subaru vehicles covered by the bulletin, the required adjustment and inspection and automatic adjustment must be completed successfully after replacement. The bulletin says that if automatic adjustment does not complete after a 30-minute drive, technicians should repeat the camera adjustment and inspection, then try automatic adjustment again. Those steps and that retry instruction apply to the covered Subaru procedure only.

Ask the shop who performed the required procedure and request its completion record. If calibration did not complete successfully, ask what the next step is and who will arrange it. For the covered Subaru vehicles, the bulletin explicitly says not to return the vehicle until the required procedures have been completed successfully.

What calibration may involve

The method and prerequisites come from the vehicle manufacturer’s procedure. A static calibration uses a target positioned in front of the vehicle on a fixture. A dynamic calibration involves driving at specified speeds on suitable marked roads. Some vehicles require one method; others require both. The Auto Glass Safety Council (AGSC) describes its checklist as covering pre- and post-replacement steps for static, dynamic, and combination systems. Its committee chair, Jacques Navant, said proper ADAS calibration after auto-glass replacement is integral to vehicle safety.

Calibration can also involve prerequisite scans or special tools, so ask whether the shop followed the full procedure rather than assuming that simply mounting the camera completes the work. Safelite describes recalibration as typically taking an hour or more, depending on make and model; that is a provider estimate, not an OEM guarantee or a universal appointment length. Its page also notes that cost varies by vehicle, systems, method, and location. Get a quote for your vehicle and location rather than relying on a generic price.

Questions to ask the installer

  • Did you check the current OEM procedure for my exact year, make, model, and camera system?
  • Does this windshield replacement trigger calibration, and does the procedure require static, dynamic, or both?
  • Are there prerequisite scans, special tools, or related steps?
  • Was calibration completed successfully, and can I have the report or other documentation?
  • If it did not complete, what happens next, and who is responsible for arranging it?

These questions help establish whether the vehicle-specific procedure was checked, followed, and completed. A provider such as Safelite offers recalibration, but method and availability vary by vehicle and location.

Does federal law require calibration after every replacement?

Do not treat NHTSA’s cited interpretation as a universal federal calibration mandate. NHTSA’s “Cyr.1” interpretation discusses replacement glazing’s compliance with FMVSS No. 205 and the statutory prohibition on knowingly making inoperative a safety device or design element. It also says NHTSA does not specify when or how vehicle repairs are conducted. That interpretation therefore does not establish that every windshield replacement must be followed by calibration. It also does not settle state-specific legal requirements.
