How to Set Up AirPods for Sleep Without Disturbing Your Partner

To keep AirPods from playing all night, connect them to a supported Apple device and turn on the automatic sleep-pause setting if your model supports it. Apple lists AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 for this feature. Keep audio quiet, check that it does not bother your partner, and switch to a headband or bedside speaker if earbuds press uncomfortably against your ear.

Turn on automatic pause when you fall asleep

Apple says AirPods 4, AirPods Pro 2, and AirPods Pro 3 can automatically pause audio when you fall asleep while listening with an iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV. The option is separate from noise cancellation, and its menu wording or location may vary by device and software version. See Apple’s AirPods support guide for current model-specific instructions.

  1. Connect your AirPods to the iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV you plan to use.
  2. Open the settings for the connected AirPods. On a supported model, enable the option to automatically pause audio when you fall asleep. If you cannot find it, check Apple’s current guide for your model and device.
  3. Start the audio you want to hear, then confirm the volume is low enough for the room and does not disturb your partner.

If your AirPods model does not offer automatic sleep pause, do not assume that noise cancellation or another listening mode will stop playback. Use an available timer in the audio app or device, if one is provided, and check that it ends playback as intended.

Keep sound private without relying on a sleep setting

Automatic pausing can limit playback after you fall asleep, but it does not set a safe volume or ensure that your partner cannot hear the sound. Start quietly and make a brief check with your partner before settling in. If you use one AirPod, test whether the sound remains private and comfortable; a single earbud is not a substitute for a playback timer.

Ozlo Sleepbuds® 2 - Sleep Earbuds, Snoring & Noise Masking Headphones
  • SIDE-SLEEPER FIT THAT STAYS PUT ALL NIGHT. Just 1.6g and flush to your ear, so you can roll over without soreness or pop-out. Four soft ear tip sizes for a secure, personal fit.
  • MASKS SNORING, TRAFFIC, AND CITY NOISE. A steady sound shield holds all night long, tuned for the low rumble of partner snoring. Consistent sound keeps the noises that usually wake you from reaching you.
  • 14-HOUR BATTERY LASTS THE WHOLE NIGHT. No waking up to a dead bud at 3am. A private in-ear alarm wakes only you, at a volume you set, without disturbing your partner.
  • 50+ SLEEP SOUNDS, OR STREAM YOUR OWN. White noise, nature, and calm tones for sleep or meditation, plus music and podcasts over Bluetooth. A sleep timer fades audio as you drift off, then switches to masking.
  • PURPOSE-BUILT FOR SLEEP, NOT ADAPTED FROM DAYTIME EARBUDS. The Smart Case measures bedroom noise, light, and temperature overnight, and the Ozlo app (iOS + Android) turns it into sleep insights that sharpen with use.

One-ear noise cancellation is a separate feature. Apple documents it for AirPods Pro and AirPods 4 ANC models. To enable it, go to Settings > Accessibility > AirPods > [your connected AirPods], then turn on Noise Cancellation with One AirPod. This setting changes the listening mode; it does not pause audio when you fall asleep. Apple also describes calming background sounds, such as rain or ocean, on supported AirPods when used with iPhone, iPad, or Mac. See Apple’s AirPods accessibility and audio guidance for current compatibility and instructions.

Use a low volume and limit listening time

Listening too loudly for too long can damage hearing. Apple offers headphone exposure notifications and a Reduce Loud Audio setting, but neither establishes a universally safe overnight volume. Apple’s 2025 support guidance gives over 80 decibels for 40 total hours in the previous seven days as an example used in the context of headphone notifications—not as a bedtime limit or recommendation. Cleveland Clinic’s April 8, 2026 guidance recommends keeping volume low and limiting listening time. It also describes potential downsides of extended earbud use, including earwax buildup, trapped moisture, infection risk, and pressure or irritation. Clean your AirPods according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and stop wearing them if your ears become sore, irritated, or uncomfortable. If you need to hear alarms or other important sounds, avoid fully isolating yourself.

Check whether sleeping in earbuds suits you

A snug fit while awake does not guarantee comfort in bed. If you sleep on your side, a pillow can press an AirPod into your ear, causing pressure or irritation. Sleep Foundation and Cleveland Clinic describe low-profile headbands as an alternative for people who find in-ear or bulkier headphones uncomfortable. A headband avoids an earbud sitting in the ear canal, but it is still wearable audio equipment.

Controls can also be customised in the app for a more personalised experience. In Sleep mode, most tap functions are disabled, keeping only a four-tap gesture to switch or exit modes—helping reduce accidental touches and support more uninterrupted sleep.
  • Long-Lasting Battery with LED Display: Euno 7 Sleep Earphones provide up to 6–8 hours of playback on a single charge, with additional power from the charging case for extended use. These headphones for sleeping support overnight listening and everyday convenience. USB-C fast charging helps reduce downtime, while the LED display on the case clearly shows the remaining battery level of both the earbuds and charging case.

Do a short comfort check before making earbuds part of your sleep routine. If an AirPod shifts, creates pressure, or irritates your ear, take it out rather than trying to sleep through the discomfort. Wearing headphones can also make it harder to hear an emergency, so consider whether you need to remain alert to sounds around you.

Option Ear pressure Privacy and control
Low-profile sleep-headphone headband Avoids an earbud sitting inside the ear canal and may be more comfortable for side sleepers, though it is still worn audio equipment. Can keep sound closer to the listener; check volume and playback duration on the device.
Small bedside speaker or white-noise machine No earbud or headphone pressure. Easy to adjust or time, but sound may be audible to your partner.
Earplugs No audio equipment, but some ear-related drawbacks can still apply. Can block common disturbances without playing sound.
Room changes, such as carpets or curtains No device worn. May help muffle sound without introducing audio, but does not give you playback controls.

White noise may mask background disruptions for some people, but the evidence on sleep is mixed; it is not a proven sleep treatment and may disturb some sleepers. If you try it, keep it quiet and stop if it disrupts your sleep or your partner’s. Cleveland Clinic’s guidance favors an external speaker as a way to avoid ear pressure and make volume and timing easier to control, while recognizing that the sound may carry across the room.
