There is no dependable universal hour for grocery bakery markdowns. Timing, eligible items and discounts vary by store and department, so the best way to find a deal is to ask the bakery staff at your local branch and check its reduced-price area. One clearly timed example is the UK Co-op Group’s offer for members: eligible unsold in-store bakery items are half price from 6 p.m. until closing or sell-out, subject to terms and availability.
When should you check for discounted bread and pastries?
Start by asking the bakery clerk or manager when that specific location usually marks down unsold products. A branch’s own routine is more useful than a chain-wide rule of thumb. Then look for a clearance rack or reduced-price stickers; some stores put bakery items in a designated area, while others mark them where they are displayed.
Consumer reporting updated August 7, 2026 describes observations at Tom Thumb where bakery markdowns appeared on the sell-by date or the day before, and reports bakery discounts at Winn-Dixie. Those are observations, not promised schedules for every branch. The same guide says its Walmart observations found fresh items generally marked down the day before the best-by date, sometimes on the date itself, and notes that some Walmart stores have bakery discount racks. In an October 24, 2025 announcement, Co-op said members at UK Co-op Group stores could get 50% off unsold loose and unpackaged in-store bakery products from 6 p.m. until 11:59 p.m. or until the products sell out, subject to terms and availability. Why markdown timing differs between stores
