Big-budget games can go on sale at any time, but the most reliable reminders to check are major storefront promotions. Steam runs seasonal sales in spring, summer, autumn and winter; PlayStation also holds recurring seasonal promotions, Days of Play and Black Friday offers. None guarantees that a particular game will be discounted: the publisher, platform, edition, region and release date all matter.
When are the major game-sale windows?
Steam’s seasonal events are the clearest recurring calendar anchors. Valve’s announced dates are below; future calendars can change.

PlayStation’s U.S. promotions page lists a Spring Sale from March 25–April 22, 2026, Days of Play from May 27–June 10, 2026, and a Summer Sale from July 15–August 12, 2026. Its listed 2025 Black Friday offer period was November 21–December 5. These are examples from published calendars, not fixed annual dates. Check PlayStation’s U.S. deals page for current promotions.

Do all big-budget games get discounted during a sale?
No. A storefront-wide event is a window to look, not a store-mandated markdown. On Steam, publishers submit discounts for their games; participation and discount size vary. Steam’s seasonal events are open to released games that meet its discount rules, but a given title may not be offered at a discount in every event.
Steam emails wishlist owners when a game receives a discount of at least 20%, according to Valve’s discount guidance. Add the exact game to your wishlist if you want that alert, while remembering that it only helps if the publisher runs a qualifying discount.

How soon after release can a Steam game go on sale?
Valve generally does not allow a new discount within 30 days of a game’s release, a price increase in any currency, or the end of its launch discount. A game whose cooldown ends during a seasonal sale may be added after the cooldown expires. These are Steam-specific rules; they should not be assumed to apply to PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo or physical retailers. See Steamworks’ discount rules.

How can you tell whether a sale is a good time to buy?
- Check the exact offer. Confirm the platform, edition, included content, currency or region, and discount end date on the store listing.
- Compare the game’s own prices. A discount during a major event is not necessarily the game’s lowest price. Use the title’s price history if you want to judge how the current offer compares with its previous prices; the event calendar alone does not establish that history.
- Use alerts and calendar dates as prompts. Wishlist the title on the relevant storefront and check around major promotions. On Steam, the documented email alert threshold is a discount of at least 20%.
- Factor in when you want to play. If the current offer suits your budget and you want the game now, waiting for a future event has no guaranteed payoff. The published calendars do not establish a universal waiting period or discount percentage for big-budget games.
What PlayStation sale dates and terms should you check?
For its 2026 Summer Sale, Sony said the promotion began July 15, refreshed July 27, and ended August 12. Sony also warned that some offers would be replaced during the promotion and directed shoppers to check their regional store for individual deals. Is there a best month to buy a big-budget game?
There is no single best month established for every title. Steam’s seasonal events and PlayStation’s published promotions provide useful times to check, but no universal pattern shows that all major games reach their best price during one month or one event. Offers also differ by title, platform, edition and region. The specific listing—and, if relevant, that game’s own price history—is more useful than the size or name of the sale event.
