When AI Writes the Fix and the Test Together, Is PASS Enough?

When AI writes both a fix and its test, PASS means the checks accepted the result—not necessarily that the result is right. The key is whether the test’s expected behavior comes from an independently reviewed requirement.

No. A passing run shows that the checks that executed accepted the code and its outputs. It does not establish that those checks captured the behavior the software was supposed to deliver. When the same AI workflow writes both a fix and its test, they can agree with each other while sharing the same mistaken assumption.

What does PASS actually prove?

PASS is evidence about the checks that ran: their assertions held for the tested inputs and execution path. It is not, by itself, a certificate that the change is correct, that all relevant behavior was exercised, or that the expected result was the right one.

A test depends on an oracle: the expected outcome or condition used to decide whether a result passes. Microsoft Research’s TOGA publication describes a test oracle as documenting the intended behavior of a unit under a given test prefix. The key word is “intended.” An assertion can be internally consistent with the implementation and still encode the wrong expectation. How can the fix and its test agree and still be wrong?

Suppose a requirement says a function should reject an expired credential. An AI changes the function to accept it, then writes a test that expects acceptance. The test passes, but the agreement between code and test says nothing about whether acceptance matches the requirement.

This is a shared-assumption problem, not proof that every AI-generated test is unreliable. If implementation and expected result are derived from the same mistaken interpretation, the test may confirm the implementation’s behavior instead of checking it against the intended behavior. A study of oracle classification and generation across developer-written and automatically generated tests from 24 open-source Java repositories found that LLM-generated oracles could reflect actual behavior rather than expected behavior; overall performance was below 50% accuracy in that study, and its authors said suggestions required human inspection. Those results describe that study and setup, not a universal error rate for current AI tools. Konstantinou, Degiovanni and Papadakis, 2024.

What does published evidence say about AI-generated tests?

The evidence supports neither “AI tests are useless” nor “a passing AI-written test proves the fix.” The results below use different methods and settings, so they should not be treated as directly comparable measures of the reliability of an individual patch.

Study What it evaluated Reported result and scope
Konstantinou, Degiovanni and Papadakis, 2024 Oracle classification and generation using developer-written and automatically generated test cases from 24 open-source Java repositories. Reported overall performance below 50% accuracy, with generated oracles sometimes reflecting actual rather than expected behavior. The authors called for human inspection. Study.
Di Grazia et al., ASE 2025 13,866 oracles from 135 Java projects, created after 2024-09-01 to reduce training-data leakage. Average mutation score was 43% for generated oracles and 45% for programmer-designed oracles in this dataset. Mutation score is a proxy for whether tests detect seeded faults, not a proof of full correctness. Study paper.
TOGA, Microsoft Research / ICSE 2022 A neural method for generating test oracles, evaluated by its authors. The publication reports 96% overall accuracy on a held-out dataset and 57 real-world bugs found when TOGA was combined with EvoSuite. These are TOGA’s reported evaluation results, not general rates for today’s AI-generated patches. Publication.
“All Smoke, No Alarm,” IEEE listing, 2026 86,156 test-file patches from 33,596 agent-authored pull requests in 2,807 GitHub repositories; the listing says the paper examines oracle signals and links with merge outcomes and review effort. The listing does not provide enough detail to support claims about the study’s findings. IEEE Xplore listing.
“From Business Requirements to Test Assertions,” arXiv preprint, 2026 Business-requirement-derived oracles tested on ten Defects4J Lang bugs with five LLMs. The preprint reports meaningful generalization alongside substantial variation by bug and model. This is preliminary evidence from a limited evaluation. Preprint.

Why coverage and mutation results are signals, not guarantees

Coverage can show that execution reached code; a passing assertion can show that the observed output matched its expected value. Neither answers whether that value expresses the requirement. To assess a test’s checking power, ask whether it would fail for a plausible faulty implementation.

Mutation testing can help with that question by checking whether tests detect deliberately altered code. The 2025 ASE study used mutation score to assess oracle usefulness, reporting the study-specific averages in the table. A score is still a metric on a particular dataset and method: it cannot establish that every requirement is tested or that the requirements themselves are correct.

How to review an AI-written fix and test

  1. Write down the intended behavior first. State what the change must do, using the requirement, specification, established behavior, or a reviewed user scenario—not just the AI’s explanation of its own code.
  2. Trace each important assertion to that source. Check whether expected values and outcomes follow from the requirement or another independently reviewed source, rather than merely mirroring the new implementation.
  3. Try plausible wrong answers. Consider boundary cases and realistic defects. Ask whether the test would fail if the change accepted an invalid input, rejected a valid one, or produced a subtly incorrect result.
  4. Run the wider relevant checks and inspect the diff. Existing tests and integration checks can expose interactions that a new unit test misses. Review both the changed code and the assertions; a green run does not replace either review.
  5. Add an independent signal where practical. Mutation testing or another check can reveal whether plausible faults escape the suite. Treat its result as additional evidence, not a correctness guarantee.
  6. Resolve ambiguous requirements with the responsible owner. A test cannot settle behavior that was never specified; product or domain judgment may be needed before the expected result can be trusted.

When is PASS more persuasive?

A passing result carries more weight when the expected behavior comes from a reviewed requirement or other independent source, the assertions distinguish intended behavior from plausible mistakes, and relevant integration or user-visible behavior is checked. Separate evidence sources reduce the chance that one shared assumption controls both the code and its test. They still do not turn an empirical test run into a universal proof.
