When AI Writes More Code, What Still Makes Developers Valuable?

AI can help developers complete some tasks, but the evidence points to a qualified shift—not a universal move up the stack. Context, review, and software quality still matter.

Some human value is likely to shift toward deciding what to build, supplying context, reviewing AI-generated work, and protecting software quality—but current evidence does not show that every developer’s role will shift in the same way. Studies find that AI assistants can help with parts of implementation and other software tasks. They do not establish that AI will take over software engineering as a whole, or that developers will reliably be rewarded for higher-level work.

The practical question is less whether AI can produce code than which tasks it can handle well in a particular project—and who remains responsible when the result has to work.

What does “moving up the stack” mean for software developers?

It means spending less time producing individual code changes and more time shaping the problem those changes should solve: clarifying requirements, understanding users and existing systems, choosing an approach, and deciding whether the result is correct and safe to ship.

That is a possible change in the distribution of work, not a guaranteed career ladder. AI assistance may reduce effort on some implementation or documentation tasks, but it can also create more work in reviewing, testing, and integrating its output. Whether that changes a developer’s responsibilities depends on the task, the codebase, the organization, and how the tool is used.

What do the studies show about AI and developer productivity?

Field experiments found more completed tasks on average

A combined analysis of three randomized field experiments at Microsoft, Accenture, and an anonymous Fortune 100 company estimated that developers using an AI coding assistant completed 26.08% more tasks, with a standard error of 10.3%. The authors reported higher adoption and greater productivity gains among less experienced developers. This is an estimate across those experiments—not a promised gain for any individual, tool, task, or team. Microsoft Research, June 2025

Enterprise users did not all experience the same benefits

An IBM Research study examined the company’s internal watsonx Code Assistant using surveys of two user cohorts totaling 669 people and unmoderated usability testing with 15 participants. The researchers found that productivity benefits may not be experienced by all users and raised questions about who owns and is responsible for generated code. The study’s results concern that enterprise setting and tool; they should not be treated as a universal measure of productivity. IBM Research, 26 April 2025

Organization-wide results depend on the environment

DORA’s 2025 report draws on a survey of nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide and more than 100 hours of qualitative data. It frames AI as an amplifier: it can magnify strengths in high-performing organizations and dysfunctions in struggling ones. That is a finding and framing from the report, not evidence that introducing AI automatically improves organizational performance. Google Research / DORA, 2025

Which software tasks are candidates for AI assistance?

Evidence from developer surveys points to a range of tasks where people want help, including implementation, tests, bug triage, refactoring, documentation, and operations. Interest in delegating a task does not prove that a tool can complete it reliably or independently; the developer still needs to judge whether the output fits the system and the intended result.

A JetBrains Research survey of 481 programmers examined those task areas and natural-language artifacts. Respondents showed interest in delegating some less-enjoyable work, including writing tests and natural-language artifacts. The study also identified trust, company policies, and lack of context about project size as reasons some respondents did not use assistants. The publication page lists February 2025, following the study’s first public release on 11 June 2024. JetBrains Research

A separate Microsoft Research study of 860 developers found strong current use and interest in improving AI support for coding and testing, alongside demand to reduce toil in documentation and operations. It also found clearer limits for identity- and relationship-centered work, such as mentoring. Microsoft Research, October 2025

What still calls for human judgment?

Defining the problem and providing project context

Code only solves the problem it was asked to solve. A developer must often interpret requirements, account for existing architecture and constraints, and determine what a useful outcome looks like. The JetBrains survey’s findings on trust, company policy, and missing project-size context illustrate why a coding assistant’s output may not be enough on its own.

Checking correctness, reliability, and security

Generated code still needs evaluation against the intended behavior and the system it will enter. In the Microsoft Research task study, reliability and security were priorities for systems-facing work. The researchers also identified transparency and steerability as ways for developers to maintain control. These safeguards matter because producing a plausible implementation is not the same as establishing that it is dependable.

Doing identity- and relationship-centered work

Some work depends on trust, shared experience, and ongoing relationships—not just producing an artifact. The Microsoft Research study found clearer limits for AI support in this area, including mentoring. AI may assist with parts of a workflow, but that does not make it a substitute for a developer’s human relationship with a colleague.

Why won’t every team see the same shift?

Results from these studies are not directly interchangeable. They examine different populations, tools, tasks, and outcomes: the field experiments measured completed tasks, while the IBM and survey studies examined user experience, reported practices, or desired support. A result about task completion does not by itself show how much time a team saves, whether its software becomes more reliable, or how work and accountability change over time.

When assessing what AI changes in a particular team, consider:

  • Task type and complexity: routine implementation differs from work requiring extensive system or user context.
  • Developer experience: the field experiments reported different adoption and gains by experience level.
  • Tool and setting: results for one assistant or enterprise environment do not automatically transfer to another.
  • Organizational conditions: DORA’s report emphasizes that AI can amplify existing strengths as well as dysfunctions.
  • Quality controls: review, testing, reliability, security, and the ability to steer the tool affect whether its output is useful.

Does this mean developer jobs will disappear or become more senior?

The available studies do not settle how AI will affect employment, hiring, compensation, or long-term demand for software developers. They provide evidence about tasks, productivity estimates, and user experience—not an economy-wide forecast. It is therefore not justified to conclude that software engineering jobs as a whole will either disappear or be upgraded into higher-level roles.

A more defensible conclusion is that some work can be assisted or delegated, while developers remain important in deciding what to build, providing context, checking results, and maintaining quality. Whether organizations formally shift responsibilities—or reward those contributions—is a separate question the cited evidence does not answer.
